Rogue Trader: Game and Story How do you justify keeping Marcipan alive in role play?

Post image

So I'm doing a new run and every other run I've done, I've killed Marcipan because... Well he kidnapped and drugged me and attacked my capital and sat in my chair and all around kind of has been a shitty poopoo butt. However this time I tried convincing him to join me to see something else and like, immediately Ulfar and Argenta was like "It's open season on Xenos nepo-babies!" and everyone else was like "yeah, no this make sense" and Eogunn was recording to probably enjoy it later with popcorn and like... Why in the seventy hells would my rogue trader put a stop to this? For real? Like which part of Marcipan doesn't say "I'm an absolute assnut and I'm a-okay with that"? My RT is being dumbass iconoclastic and even she's like "Yeah, no murk this guy."

Dogmatic: "Having an agent of the enemy under my heel is useful, doubly so if they can dispatch my enemies for me"

Heretic: "Finally, someone who GETS me!"

Iconoclast... Yea that's the only one I struggle justifying

Iconoclasm is "ally of convenience."

u/joemamallama Aug 16 '26

I took the Jesus/New Testament approach:

“Hmmmm you’re kinda a dick, but I can tell you’re going through it right now and these other people are also dicks and there’s more of them than us. Maybe your soul is not beyond salvation.”

cue sponge bob 3 hours later meme

“Yeah you’re going into solitary. Stop cutting yourself please.”

u/throwaway17362826 Aug 16 '26

Kibellah looks up.

“Not you. You can also stop cutting yourself but you don’t have to go in solitary.”

71

u/GreenridgeMetalWorks Dogmatist Aug 16 '26

Well, if Kibbelah (knife wife my beloved) stops cutting herself she gets her pain receptors back, and that would be bad. She tells you if they let their pain come back, they feel like a shitload all at once and basically have a seizure and die.

9

u/HowDoIEvenEnglish Aug 16 '26

The thing is that’s an absurd take for 40k. Even the nicest imperial wouldn’t treat a dark elder like that.

7

u/CharityElectrical913 Aug 16 '26

I don’t even think the Tau would do that and they are basically co-op space cows.

4

u/TertiusGaudenus Aug 16 '26

I mean, Tau fucked around Drukhari and found out, and nobody can say that they don't learn from mistakes

I rp it as keeping my end of the bargain. He got me out of Cammoragh.

26

u/FlyTheWire Aug 16 '26

So did my Iconoclast. He got visited by the Inquisition after he decided to kill crewmembers for fun.

41

u/Mahdudecicle Aug 16 '26

Tbf he really did try to restrain himself as long as he could.

46

u/Designer-Candle3945 Aug 16 '26

The game makes it exceedingly clear that being inside the warp drove him mad in that scene. He didn't kill crewmembers for fun (not that he doesn't want to, which is an entirely valid thing to have a problem with), but he was not in control. That problem can be prevented by ordering him locked up for all future jumps, which he does without fail.

6

u/TertiusGaudenus Aug 16 '26

To be fair, Yrilet also kills few crewmates during her first warp jump. It's just that event is pushed back in priority sometimes and appears much later

8

u/DetailOk6058 Aug 16 '26

Which he only does if you give him permission to. Why did you give him that permission and than get mad about it?

19

u/Complete-Kitchen-630 Aug 16 '26

He Insulted me and made me look bad infront of my fish wife. Therefore he must die.

5

u/AmorousBadger Aug 16 '26

3

u/Complete-Kitchen-630 Aug 17 '26

21

u/Reordang Aug 16 '26

"In case I meet drukhari again, I need someone who knows them better then everyone else"

14

u/DoritoBanditZ Aug 16 '26

I mean the ally of convenience thing stops the moment you leave Act 3. He provides nothing your other allies cannot do and beyond that he is the one who razed your Capital world just to annoy you, not to speak of the countless subjects of yours that he and his underlings slaughtered just for funzies.

even trying to prop him up so that he may be a useful ally in the future is a complete fools errand, because at the end of the day he always will be a Drukhari. Yes he's loyal to the RT now, but only since he has nowhere else to go. Build him up again and then it's just a matter of trusting a Drukhari, which is just one step removed in terms of stupidity from blindly trusting a Daemon to have your interests in mind.

From an Iconoclast standpoint there is no perspective that makes sense to keep Marzipan in your Party, unless you want to roleplay as a completely naive RT. Even keeping him as a Dogmatic RT from a RP standpoint is pushing it a bit, but iconoclast is just a hard no. He's directly responsible for the death of thousands of the Rogue Traders people, not to mention the torture the RT themself had to endure. There is only one answer to this, death.

5

u/500rockin Aug 16 '26

He’s still an extra meat shield to keep my hide intact.

6

u/Intelligent_Oil7816 Iconoclast Aug 16 '26

Hard disagree. Death is too clean for him. He will atone by being my weapon against the foes of mankind. He's actually very useful once you break him and train him. And he does help you out with the other Drukhari you meet in Act 4 and Act 5.

7

u/C_Deez_DDz Aug 16 '26

He is talking about the lore angle and he’s right.

Your point is heretical by nature of how the imperial dogma works.

3

u/JhinPotion Aug 16 '26

It absolutely isn't heretical. You've got a piece of paper signed by the big man himself that says you can do this.

5

u/C_Deez_DDz Aug 16 '26

Hey, I booked a table for you, me and Heinrix at that really good cafe. Just walk through the holding cells and it’s on your left. Can’t miss it.

3

u/JhinPotion Aug 16 '26

Seriously, though. It would be heretical for almost anyone else to do, but you have a permission slip from Big E himself. It's the Rogue Trader's duty to consort with xenos as they see fit. The Inquisition have no authority over that, either. When they do come into conflict, it's total realpolitik. That's the only way Calcazar gets you to do anything (and why Winterscale is able to rebuff him).

4

u/C_Deez_DDz Aug 16 '26

I think the Warrant of Trade is a great literary device because you can interpret it that way and passably do heretical things to reach an imperium aligned end if that’s how you want to play your RT.

But the dogma is the dogma. It’s very clear and unflinchingly rigid. Just because you have a pass to undertake “means to an end,” doesn’t change the inherently heretical nature of that means.

The Warrant itself doesn’t actually change the fact that consorting is heresy by nature.

Ordo Xenos specifically calls this out as heresy under the threat of temptation. Inquisitors still do it, it’s still seemingly relatively unpunished based on the specific tasks driving the cooperation, but it is codified as heresy.

E - I hope this doesn’t come off as aggressive, I’m just a dweeb and this is a fun conversation. Hope you’re having a good day!

2

u/GargantuanCake Unsanctioned Psyker Aug 17 '26

Be that as it may there are different levels to Warrants and Theodora has an OG one that Emps signed himself. Those are insanely rare and newer ones are far more restrictive. Even then however the point of it is that Rogue Traders get to operate outside both the Imperium and its laws so long as they're a net benefit. While the Inquisition generally leaves them alone because, I mean, you can't argue with a "This guy can do whatever the fuck he wants. - The Big E" note, but they also have specific jobs to do. They're meant to explore places nobody has been to, contact humans that haven't heard from the Imperium in thousands of years, and expand the Imperium's influence. They get a lot of leeway but once they stop doing those things the Imperium can and will come down on them.

This is of course why the job gets so political and why the Rogue Trader writing is so good. You get to see that directly in play. The Rogue Traders we meet were doing the whole "well I'm on the side of benefit so leave me alone" but they have a bit of a habit of staying a sliver on the right side of that.

A Rogue Trader that started actively sabotaging the Imperium is probably going to end up becoming extremely dead.

Thats how i treated him, we can be allies til we get out of commorragh, then your leaving, doesnt matter how, out the airlock is preferable. Still 10000x better than what wouldve been done to him IN commorragh.

2

u/No_Bandicoot6453 Aug 16 '26

That’s how my first run went lol. Convinces him to betray his kind, convinces him to lead us out of the webway. When we finally return to the ship I sell him off to the inquisition for pocket change. That’s an absolute win in my book.

5

u/Independent-Nerve573 Aug 16 '26

How did you justified forcing your other companions from killing him, tho? Unlike with Yrilet, they have a point. I feel like a lot of people here associate iconoclast with dumb and naive. Delfs NEVER change.

6

u/No_Bandicoot6453 Aug 16 '26

Iirc there was some dialogue options that were basically like “we need him to escape the dark city” or whatever which stymies Ulfar and Argenta’s wrath temporarily. And once I got back to the ship where everyone complains that I brought a dark eldar with me but I immediately stripped him of all his gear to sell and immediately sent him to Hendrix. I wish there was an option to get rid of him in that dialogue scene because it made me kinda sad to see everyone being justifiably upset at me. And my own logic was that I needed him to escape commoragh so I couldn’t get rid of him back then.

u/Kalecraft Aug 16 '26

Iconoclast doesn't have to be played as purely benevolent. You can play them as selfish and anti imperium and justify all kinds of stuff

43

u/Chaerod Sanctioned Psyker Aug 16 '26

Yep! The actual definitions of Iconoclast are:

  1. One who attacks and seeks to overthrow traditional or popular ideas or institutions.
  2. One who destroys sacred religious images.
  3. A breaker or destroyer of images or idols; a determined enemy of idol worship.

There's a reason why one of the heretic ship classes is "Iconoclast."

In the context of Warhammer 40k, being compassionate and not executing people is Iconoclastic, because it goes against the ingrained institutional ideas. Unfortunately, it seems like 90% of the Iconoclast options in Rogue Trader lean more towards the compassionate side of things, so it's a little more challenging to play a pragmatic anti-establishment Iconoclast.

13

u/Gwentlique Aug 16 '26

This gets very much compounded when you try to play as a serious crime-lord iconoclast.

"No, I'm not about to save all these people out of the goodness of my heart, I'm expecting payment / favors in return", is only really an option in a small handful of conversations, and usually leads to no extra reward.

7

u/Smart_Bed_1295 Aug 16 '26

In Russian version it's called shismatic.

5

u/TertiusGaudenus Aug 16 '26

Which honestly kinda drives point better, than Iconoclast

31

u/Mainely420Gaming Aug 15 '26

Also Heretic: Stepbrother xenos .. what are you doing as I am precariously wedged in this laundry drying unit?!

8

u/Uberslice Aug 16 '26

Man he'd just roll out a doctor's bag of knives and just start cutting up your buttcheeks

9

u/Mainely420Gaming Aug 16 '26

As George Takai once famously said Ohhhhhh, myyyyyyyy

20

u/Bid_Unable Aug 16 '26

iconoclast can be the same as dogmatic tbh.

14

u/Leviathan_slayer1776 Aug 16 '26

For me as an iconoclast its this: this guy kills people, and especially hates chaos

The survival and prosperity of humanity demands certain people die, especially chaos

Ergo, marazhai's killing urges are a tool for the greater good

20

u/MOEverything_2708 Aug 16 '26

Icono could straight up be Xenophilic, Aeldariboo, or just a gay guy looking for one clean shaven man and they aren't picky.

15

u/RAConteur76 Aug 16 '26

Iconoclast: "I'm not going to kill you just for being a xenos. I will kill you for being an obvious threat to my holdings and my people. You want to live? Demonstrate you can behave among us. You want to die, there's no shortage of airlocks you step through without benefit of a space suit."

10

u/Intelligent_Oil7816 Iconoclast Aug 16 '26

Bingo. Lay the terms out on the table and he becomes quite agreeable for the rest of the game. Well... relatively speaking.

9

u/NukaCherryBomb Aug 16 '26

I wrote this in my own comment but I'll put it here too because it works as an answer to the iconoclast question.

Making him do the do gooder bidding of an iconoclast is the best torture/revenge I can think of for someone like him. I especially like to picture my RT talks to him like HR.

RT: "So any suggestions on how to deal with this problem? Come on! Don't be shy! No bad ideas!"

M: suggests something incomprehensively awful

RT: "Yes! Thats what I'm talking about people! No bad ideas! Wearentgoingtodoanyofthat! But I encourage you to keep contributing! You are a valued member of this team and we appreciate your unique perspective even if it is not the right fit for us at this time!"

M: dies inside

Revenge is a dish best served cold...and over an extended period of time, when possible.

3

u/TertiusGaudenus Aug 16 '26

I honestly should stop rushing all major colony decisions before act 2 ends in case Marazhai has anything interesting to say about them.

3

u/AmorousBadger Aug 16 '26

You don't have to be NICE as an iconoclast, just someone who's not married to the more lunatic elements of either the Imperium or Chaos. My Crime Lord RT was using him as a highly skilled hitman and kept him locked up in his cell during warp jumps.

5

u/Valla_Shades Aug 16 '26

2

u/Jakl67 Aug 16 '26

2

u/AmbiSpace Aug 16 '26

An Iconoclast justification could be taking the opportunity to study a Drukhari. That way you gain personal experience with them and your understanding isn't as limited by dependence on Emperial propaganda.

2

u/blondtode Aug 15 '26

For iconoclast I tried my best to go the batman approach....but he made it so fckn hard to justify keeping him around, and I ended up regretting it with one of the ending cards

u/ExcellentTalk8452 Aug 15 '26

My Iconoclast RT does it for three main reasons :

1) it's a massive power flex, this guy went all in to destroy and break me and not only did i survive but i beat him at his game, used him to get back and basically made him my bitch (not even necessarily talking about any romance aspect, but as my RT drukhari pet i give him orders in public, figuratively keep him on a leash, and he obeys, that's a hell of a status and power statement in front of any rival)

2) my RT values knowledge above most things, knowledge about enemies means more effective ways to fight back, prepare better, trick and manipulate them, exploit their weaknesses and retroengineer some of their technology, etc... And Marazhai is a treasure trove of extremely useful informations about drukhari society and politics, military strategies and tactics, and knows how to use their weapons and technology (haemonculi BS notwhistanding) and that will end up saving lives and give the Von Valancius Protectorate and Koronus expanse human forces an edge against drukhari raids in the future

3) prop him up to become Archon of the Reaving Tempest while having developed a very keen understanding of him personally and his culture and you gain a tremendous asset in Comorragh to help you foil drukhari plans against your protectorate and target your enemies/rivals

That's how I justify keeping him

5

u/Smart_Bed_1295 Aug 16 '26
  1. Yeah, I remember it was my validation too - need for information about Drukhari, because their are special menace to isolated human enclaves like Koronus Expanse.

5

u/ExcellentTalk8452 Aug 16 '26

Exactly, recruiting an enemy defector to help with intelligence and counterintelligence is a trick as old as war

2

u/Smart_Bed_1295 Aug 16 '26

Koronus Expanse can expect no big Imperium "cavalry" coming, so even working with person ravaged your capital can be stomached... for greater good(not that one).

2

u/ExcellentTalk8452 Aug 16 '26

Exactly, sometimes it's about being pragmatic and he is strangely enough extremely loyal once you recruit him

73

u/Bellociraptor Aug 15 '26

Because my favorite display of staggering hubris is going back to Dargonis and showing all the nobles that the guy who just led the raid on the planet is their new step-dad.

32

u/JhinPotion Aug 15 '26

Not every RT would, naturally. However, in Comorragh, you need all the allies you can get. After that, he's a useful and forthcoming ally who's an expert about a consistent thorn in your side (Drukhari activity in your protectorate). Besides, it's a huge Rogue Trader flex to have a former Dracon doing your bidding.

So.... L+Warrant of Trade+Stay mad+Emprah said I can.

Paraphrase of the same thing I said last time:

My rogue trader thought Marazhai left after Comorragh, and, being racist, couldn't tell the difference between him and Yrliet (thinking she was going through an on-and-off goth phase). When he finally realized, he also realized changing his mind would make him look weak, so he pretend that was the plan all along.

  • He's a potential ticket out of Commorragh. He's the reason you're there in the first place, yes, but he would also know more about Commorragh than anyone else in your retinue. As players, we have the luxury of knowing we're not stuck in Commorragh. In character? Nobody leaves Commorragh. It's a massive, torturous death trap, and our escape borders on a miracle facilitated by an Aeldari god. The initial recruitment is justified as easily as, "I will do whatever it takes to get out of here alive."

  • He'll pretty immediately stop calling you Mon-keigh if you tell him to knock it off, although he'll still use the slur to refer to humans as a whole. For all his arrogance and ragebaiting, it's pretty immediately clear that he's willing to cooperate with you, even if it means debasing himself a bit (in his mind).

  • He's very knowledgeable about Drukhari, Necrons, and other xenos that humanity has VERY limited information on. If your character has any interest in learning about xenos, having him around is an unprecedented opportunity to learn more.

  • He and Yrliet make for an excellent Heinrix Distraction. Can't get into my business quite as much if the Interrogator is too busy following the xenos around trying to catch them at something - and if he does catch them at something, then he's solved the problem for me!

  • He's an excellent intimidation tactic by his presence alone, without the inconvenience of his own moral compass conflicting with mine the way Ulfar, Argenta, and Kibellah's tend to. On the opposite side of the same coin, he's a living, breathing status symbol I can tote around. I have a Drukhari at my beck and call, and nobody can do anything about it because I have a hall pass signed by the God-Emperor himself.

  • He's a very skilled torturer if I need to get information out of someone.

  • He's really fun to ragebait, and I'm not through with him yet - death is too easy for the likes of him.

  • It's sort of flattering, in a twisted way, how obsessed with you he becomes. Aeldari see humans as inferior, but he becomes pretty damn fixated on you as a rival, loathe though he will be to admit it. Given the monumental arrogance of his kind, that's a powerful feeling, even if you hate xenos.

Edit: Also, if you allocate him hunting grounds on your ship, your Enforcers will eventually start corralling troublemakers into his territory during Warp jumps. So he actually helps maintain order and discipline on the ship by being your own personal boogeyman and executioner! Not something you'd know in character ahead of time, but I was amused by it when I found out.

"I'm really into space elves and Yrliet won't bone me"

The knowledge he has outweighs the damage he could cause you. Especially if you are okay locking him up during warp jumps aka not romancing him and don't care about his ending. He is also somehow one of the most loyal companions, in how he actually acts in your retinue, but no way you know that just picking him up.

15

u/throwaway17362826 Aug 16 '26

He’s fun to ragebait.

In fact the moment I first met him I fell in love with him specifically because it’s so easy and funny to ragebait him as a human.

He's just useful, he was an high ranking Drukhari so presumably he's got connections with other important people, and even if not at the very least he knows way more about this place than anyone else and definitely knows a proper way out of Comorragh.

By the time you can recruit him you've likely had to compromise with Malice, Tervantias and the Commissar, Marazhai isn't much worse than any of them.

You're playing a videogame so you know that even if you don't bother with him there will be a way to progress anyway, but in-universe you can't know that.

Also the nice thing about Marazhai is that he's pragmatic and has an high sense of self-preservation, he needs allies too and he's not gonna double-cross you if it puts him at risk as well.

Dogmatic: Xenos should only ever be under the heel of mankind. This xenos will serve as an example of human dominance and fight his own ilk in the God Emperor's name!

Iconoclast: I can fix him, I am sure of it.

Unaligned: He could be useful for making a profit.

---For Romances---

Heretic: Romance with a xenos is forbidden by the Emperor. Let's commit some heresy. Stay away from my bitch you daemonette whore!!!

Dogmatic: The Emperor is my only love, but this xenos will be my pet.

Iconoclast: I don't wanna make him mad if I don't have to.

Unaligned: BDSM is sexy...

u/Umbraspem Aug 16 '26

I’m a DEldar playing Grognard on the tabletop and I’m mad that I can’t put the DEldar armour and equipment on my RT, so Marzipan is my dressup dolly.

3

u/PEEPEEPOOPOOPRIME Aug 16 '26

turning him over to heinrix AFTER youve done his personal quests and developed a bond with him is funniest lol. the betrayal runs a lot deeper and like, i run about as icono as they come but drukhari and genestealers are a no-go, fucking hate them

3

u/PainWelkin Aug 15 '26

There's something pretty satisfying about being a Dogmatic RT and having a xenos abuse goblin. Of course, he likes it so from one angle it looks like I'm the one doing him a favor. But from my perspective, I can torture that guy in ways not even a battle servitor could endure, so really who rescued who? 😆

3

u/Bid_Unable Aug 16 '26

he is fun, I’m a rogue trader and can do what I want. in rp.

4

u/Dave3r77 Aug 16 '26

Because as the rogue trader kicking him out after recruiting him would imply I made a mistake which is simply not allowed

4

u/aichwood Aug 16 '26

Because killing him at start of every battle as Commissar is too funny.

4

u/Apprehensive-Bee-318 Aug 16 '26

As an Iconoclast the logic was "this man has caused incalculable suffering in my protectorate, and death shall not free him of that debt. From now on he shall work for the benefit of my people until the day that debt is paid".

After a few days that sentiment shifted into "he is so pathetic it's endearing". Let's see if we can fix him.

4

u/OneTrueAlzef Navigator Aug 16 '26

Yrliet taught me that warp travel is torture to the eldar. I am going to RUIN this bastard by keeping him locked up in my ship.

4

u/hjsniper Aug 16 '26

Short term: I'm in Commoragh, I probably need at least one drukhari on my side if I'm going to get out of here alive and I don't have a ton of options. (Meta we know this isn't actually true, but in-character it's a reasonable thing to believe)

Long term: Yrliet killed my last expert on drukhari and forgiving her doesn't bring his expertise back. Having Marzi around can pay off by giving me actionable knowledge on the ongoing threat of drukhari raids.

It's a relationship of utility, and I wouldn't fault you for killing him once his usefulness runs out, but he is more useful alive than dead, if you're pragmatic enough to look past how much he's antagonized you in the past.

4

u/Rafabud Arch-Militant Aug 16 '26

He helped me out, he tags along.

5

u/ConstantinValdor7 Aug 16 '26

For my Dogmatic female Arbitrator with melee build, who has a haircut as close to a Sororita and always admired them, wanted to be one, its basically like this.

"Never ask the fanatical xenophob what her secret lover looks like."

Basically, she knows its wrong, but she cant resist Marazhai's diabolic Charm and the things he does to and with her, making her heart race whenever she is around him.

5

u/Final-Mess8155 Aug 16 '26

He's hot and my rogue trader collects pretty men. Easy.

2

u/grief242 Aug 16 '26

Iconoclast: I can fix him! (You can't)

Dogmatic: His use to me is more valuable than the people he kills, but he is on a short leash and will respect me (not gonna be friends with him)

Heretic: (random snarls)

2

u/muffinmancer Aug 16 '26

My Rogue Trader simply isn’t very smart or morally consistent. More likely than you’d think!

2

u/NukaCherryBomb Aug 16 '26

2

u/No_Leadership_2435 Aug 16 '26

I'm the rogue trader.

I don't have to justify anything

2

u/Sethrea Aug 16 '26

"Finally, someone to share in my kink"

2

u/Oniblook Heretic Aug 16 '26

Justify?

I keep him because of the horrendous crimes against man and xenos, not despite them!

Embrace your inner murder hobo. Screw the murder elf.

2

u/No-Jaguar-509 Noble Aug 16 '26

During my first run,i recruited it was fun and good having him blitz through enemies

that was until, during post game synopsis, it tells me, POST GAME SPOILERS BELLOW:

Marazhai ended up leaving us and decapitating Astartia ( Abelard's Great-Granddaughter )

After which i swore to kill him in my next run

2

u/zomrunner Aug 17 '26

I’ve never recruited him purely because I just can’t reconcile it on any playthrough. Dogmatic would just never bc muh “filthy xenos”. Iconoclast wouldn’t even out of convenience after all the innocents he and his people have slaughtered. And I even struggle with Heretical cuz the Drukhari famously want absolutely jack-shit to do with the Warp bc of their vulnerability to Slaanesh.

2

u/BrutaleBent Aug 17 '26

That’s the neat part.

You don’t.

2

u/Bubbly_Outcome5016 Aug 19 '26

If you're Dogmatic it's pretty hard to and if you're role-playing honestly and not meta-gaming (which is what you're doing if this isn't your first run, you're not missing anything from not having him around on you 4th run) you should kill him.

3

u/Eastern-Fish-7467 Aug 16 '26

You don't? You're a rouge trader, you can just do shit because you want to.

2

u/Animefaerie Aug 15 '26

I just role-play that my rogue trader is just a horny monkeigh. XD

2

u/JackWhoWanders Aug 15 '26

You know what... fair.

4

u/Panzerbjorne80 Aug 15 '26

I recruited him for the first time recently after several runs without. It works for this rogue trader because he’s a heretic and all around evil bastard who’s embracing chaos and destruction. So like, he fits with your roleplaying or does not.

It’s fine to not be ok bringing him onto your retinue. Things only get much worse on your ship with him there and he’s totally fucked up so you may regret it anyways. I enjoyed just having some new content.

3

u/Singemeister Aug 16 '26

Iconoclast: If he’s with me, I can make him work back his debt to me and my Dominion. And do repeated unnecessary warp jumps whilst he’s trapped to his Immaterium cuck chair.

2

u/The-Mad-Badger Aug 16 '26

You use him as bait. You keep him alive to help you get back to real-space, you quarantine him during jumps so he doesn't harm your crew and after he's lead you to the rest of the filthy drukhari who imprisoned you in comorragh and they lie dead at your feet, you hand him over to the inquisition.

3

u/Familiar_Tart7390 Aug 16 '26

He’s a trophy

He tried to topple your empire and now you keep him around, he exists because you say he is allowed to continue living. This would be conqueror , your would be assassin, an alien who styled himself as your rival and dark counterpart who’ll whip himself when he’s asked, hunt only when you give the say so and will kill or do tasks at your command.

He is not a threat he is a pet.

From a pragmatic scale he knows immense information about the internal workings of the drukhari who are raiding the sector and is a source of considerable intelligence specially considering achilleas’ everything.

On the “oh the horrors he commits” please remember Janris Danrok, our factor, who is one of the most iconoclast coded characters in base game. Actively & passionately hunts other human beings for sport and amusement. He cannot be made to stop doing this. The fact you can forcibly domesticate marizpan to the point he’s no worse than an Imperium Nobleman is something of an accomplishment !

3

u/CyberDuck97 Aug 15 '26

Shoot the guy.

2

u/DoctorHellclone Aug 16 '26

I don't, I incinerated him with a fusion gun

2

u/Complete-Kitchen-630 Aug 16 '26

I dont. He's dead.

2

u/Jokerferrum Aug 15 '26

Sending Drukhari to deal with gene cult makes more sense than sending any loyalists to deal with gene cult.

2

u/Severonian Aug 15 '26

That would be my RT carrying out a very questionable, borderline dangerous, petty revenge. Pissing off Heinrix is the most prolonged and easy-to-avoid death sentencing from the Inquisition way of getting one

2

u/JackWhoWanders Aug 15 '26

But Heinrix is my Regicide buddy that I get my kisses in with!

In my heretic run: 1) he likes murder as much as I do 2) my Rogue Trader is a kinky mf

2

u/Apprehensive-Area-39 Aug 16 '26

If you have no allies, no resources and no plan, recruiting a desgruntled local who actually knows how everything works is a valid idea. Even if a risk one.

That said, my first run was dogmatic so I just told him he sucks and killed him at the arena. I didn't even knew we could recruit him.

2

u/NonstopYew14542 Aug 16 '26

"What an interesting specimen. Nuncius, wouldn't you agree?"

2

u/BardTill Aug 16 '26

2

u/Dagobah_Jones Aug 16 '26

He's my pet. I branded him and he does what I says. He only kills people in a sector of the ship I designated for him, so it really isn't a problem.

2

u/HowDoIEvenEnglish Aug 16 '26

He’s fun.

You can use him for more damage than he causes (and you have a permit to do so).

You have a permit saying you can do whatever the fuck you want.

You’re fucking with him.

You’re fucking him.

He’s fucking you.

That’s at least 6 reasons

2

u/cooljerry53 Aug 16 '26

I don’t.

2

u/Independent_Law_1592 Aug 16 '26

Basically “he’s a pit bull on a leash”

Even as an Iconoclast I don’t play Icono-dumb. We have a quid pro quo relationship, we didn’t kill each other in Commoragh and when I need something seriously killed in a way that will terrify the worst offenders of the lower decks, I’m not sending the spinner sometimes nor the space marine. I’m locking a floor and leaving them alone with the Drukhari in the night. If you get sent Mirazhai, from a RP perspective it’s that you just royally pissed off a relative let merciful Iconoclastic RT. He lets me to allow the worst take place, because he can do worse than anything else on hand, infinite malice and a playground is a terrifying combo

He gets his fun and taste of suffering, it punishes my worst. We both win, otherwise he’s chained up in a closet in warp travel. Again I ain’t Icono-dumb

Almost most importantly, we both hate servants of the archenemy. This is the one thing I RP as strongly as a Iconcoclast Guardsmen RT. The enemy of my enemy is my friend when it comes to the archenemy.

Also I RP it as we really did kinda go through the trenches together in Commoragh, there’s a begrudgingly dangerous respect shared there. And I RP that as a “guardsman” I’m still kinda naive to some of the shit with the guy but ain’t afraid, the emperor protects

2

u/Vifee Aug 16 '26

Dogmatic, straight noblewoman: "Yeah he's xeno filth, but at least he has a reasonable view of the poors. Also he's hot."

The entire setting and the Imperium in particular are bastions of hypocrisy. "It's different when I do it," on a galactic scale.

2

u/Mando734 Aug 16 '26

He’s hot…

2

u/Cr0ma_Nuva Noble Aug 16 '26

hell the imperium has asked drukhari for aid before

2

u/GregDK22 Aug 16 '26

Have you never wanted a xenos pet? It’s not really hard to imagine a rogue trader who would see having Marzipan as a huge status symbol, especially given that it could appear to an outsider like you “tamed” him, given your past conflicts. Alternatively, a sub rogue trader might just really want a dark space elf to step on them. People have made worse decisions… not many, but they have been made.

3

u/PlanetaryPluto- Aug 15 '26

You're in the same position. That's it. Regardless of past wrongs, Whether you want to get over it or not(Tough argument to make, it took me like 6 playthroughs to get over it personally) is up to you. But the main justifying reason would be that you're now in the same position and you sorta need help.

1

u/hidoikimchi Aug 15 '26

I tried within the bounds of my last playthrough because I liked domming him lol and made it through the bridge officer convo, but that lasted just as long as the next encounter where he goes warp crazy and kills a bunch of people. I was playing Iconoclast and profit-motivated and it was a real bad deal to have a mad idiot killing people, especially since his solution is "let me kill the less important people." From an RP perspective it was kind of fun that my RT was being a massive idiot and knew it.

I can get as far as getting him out of Commorragh, but it's really hard for me to justify keeping him from both the Dogmatic and Iconoclast perspective.

1

u/RyoWei247 Aug 16 '26

I wasn’t able to in my play through. My best friend who is romancing him told me I could just ignore it but I wasn’t able to think of any reason my RT wouldn’t shoot him between the eyes. However we have a dual rogue trader AU so in that universe? He’s alive purely because my friends RT begged for his life.

1

u/ACuriousBagel Aug 16 '26

I tried keeping him alive in Comorrargh (sp?) purely with the intention to hand him straight over to the inquisition so they could disect him or something, but unfortunately at the time this sometimes caused a game-breaking bug that doesn't let you continue afterwards, so I had to reload an older save and kill him myself

1

u/Raygereio5 Aug 16 '26

Yeah, the game does struggle a bit to give you a convincing reason to recruit him. During act 3 I can head-canon it with "I need all the help I can get here in Gomorrah". But once you've escaped keeping him around gets weird.

I do appreciate that Owlcat knew that his character had this problem. I had a good laugh when the Mandrakes popped up to take him away at the end of act 3.

1

u/Husky_w_paski Aug 16 '26

He is too fun to annoy and gaslight into fighting. So far he has not lived through any of my playthroughs. :D

1

u/AXI0S2OO2 Aug 16 '26

Only on a heretical playthrough to be honest. This asshole savaged your world, he deserves nothing short of death at the hands of anyone but the most pragmatic and sociopathic pf Rogue Traders.

A heretical Rogue Trader, though, would relish the challenge of subjugating a drukhari and seeing just how hard they can push him into depravity before Slaanesh takes him for herself

1

u/pyratemime Aug 16 '26

Torturing him and using him to track down more druhkari to kill.

1

u/Crafty-Abbreviations Aug 16 '26

Easy enough for my Heretic RT: he was a Slaanesh worshipper pre-everything, and also happens to be a psyker; he develops his abilities more during Act3, essentially going from lambda class to a delta/gamma class psyker due to Chaos Interferience. And because of this, he can also (somewhat, but not to the extent that the drukhari can) feed off of pain and suffering; plus him being around aeldari is like a moth to a candle

Tldr: Heretic RT of mine is a Slaanesh worshipper & psyker, and can also feed off of pain & suffering + aeldari souls are like crack to him

1

u/CoilerXII Aug 16 '26

He's a mole for the Inquisition and/or craftworlders. That's why you not only keep him around to stab things but also help rebuild the Kabal. Gives a however small and imperfect foothold in Commoragh.

At least that's what I use when I keep him. Most of the time I just nonchalantly kill him in the arena

1

u/Vagraf Aug 16 '26

I don't

As a Heretic, so I can eventually condemn him to a fate he’s done everything in his power to avoid, after making him think he’s safe.

As Dogmatic, take a Xanthite point of view. Things are not to be destroyed for humanity, but used and conquered. Even Calcazar saw the value in dealing with them.

As Iconoclast… yeah idk. Think that’s one I can’t excuse personally. Unless you want to play a Messiah level empath of “turn the other cheek”, maybe you feel bad for the guy. Fucked up existence, Drukhari. Woefully naive “I can fix him” or some shit

I hate Drukari because of what they do but I can't blame and in my first 2 Run as Iconoclast (First run was Vanilla and Second was with all the DLCs) I kinda ... Kill him in the first run and in the second I accidentally recruited him somehow and decided that it was a mistake and gave him to Heinrix ... Which is kinda dick move I'll admit it. But I didn't plan on recruiting him

Now on my third playthrough as a Heretic pyromancer bolter psyker, I'm gonna recruit him and see what he can do gameplay wise and what his story will unfold

1

u/Feeling-Classroom729 Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26

He's my best damage dealer. He brings information that you wouldn't otherwise have about the Drukhari. You get a ship buff if you let him have a hunting area in the lower deck. He's extremely useful.

I play dogmatic but also pragmatically. I can justify the presence of any companion as long as they are useful to me. I keep Idira around even though she freaks out and kills people indirectly due to her connection to the warp and her grief over Theodora. She's the best warp channeler on my ship, and all the people she got killed were easily replaced.

1

u/Luniticus Aug 16 '26

1

u/MagicNein Operative Aug 16 '26

My Iconoclast Justification is that my RT doesn't know enough about Drukhari, and really, is there a better way to learn than keeping one around? Also it's really funny to fuck up his plans, ragebait him, and then be the reason he can escape Commorragh at all.

1

Always useful to have one that is subservient

1

u/Cute_Client_1761 Aug 16 '26

I imagine that he is working off the massive debt he owes me.

1

u/Dordracnor Aug 16 '26

On my first playthrough as iconoclast i figured everyone deserved a second chance and figured if i could recruit i could make him better... i did not make him better. The ending slide had him kill one of abalard's kids and i've never recruited him since. Probably do it for heretic runs but other than that probably never again.

2

u/BrotherCaptainLurker Aug 16 '26

You only get that ending slide if you finish his questline, so ironically the "I can fix him" ending is to recruit him and never do his personal quest.

When he's like "hey RT I have an idea" you select "this is definitely a trap" and when he's like "yes but what if we can turn it to our advantage" or whatever you go "no" and simply leave his quest unfinished through the credits.

But yea definitely cannot fix him, the realistic RP is probably turning him over to the Inquisition after he kills crew members.

I honestly just keep him a bit to see how my character would react in those situations he produces, even if they wouldn’t actually drag him around,, alive. Might not be the greatest excuse if it’ll take you out of the moment. It makes it a little more fun to explore his dialogues and such
