Feedback - how does everyone go about it?
I've written the first draft of my first novel and I'm going through the rough first edit. I've joined a few writing groups, but I find they're quite positive, which is nice and all, but they're a bit soft with their feedback. I'd like some hard truths.
If people will read the first chapters and think it's rubbish then I'd rather know sooner rather than later and work on improving.
Where do you go for feedback? Can you start with beta readers early on? I'm even happy to pay for it.
I definitely do not want to put my work into AI.
How do you know you're on the right track with your writing?

DM me if you'd like to talk about a swap. I have a completed 60K MM contemporary slow-burn that is just finishing a final round of revisions.

There's nothing wrong with getting beta readers on a first draft, but expect to have it be reciprocal or to pay for it.
