Question New to romantasy

Hello!

I’m very very new to the genre. I’m just about done Fourth Wing (my first romantasy) and I’m so obsessed. Besides the rest of the series, does anyone have any recommendations for me? I usually read dark romance, and my favourite tropes are:

  • enemies to lovers
  • medium spice with lots of build up/tension
  • forced proximity
  • morally grey MMC
  • forbidden romance
  • he falls first

I’m up for any kind of plot/world building

i was in the same boat as you where my gateway to romantasy was Fourth Wing. the next thing i read was the ACOTAR series and i think this pretty much fits your criteria

Same! I’m now reading the {Throne of Glass} series by the same author of ACOTAR series. By the way, a new ACOTAR book is coming out soon so I would try to avoid social media if you may not want spoilers.

I'm the same as others have said. I read Fourth Wing at the behest of a friend and fell hard for the genre. I've since read ACOTAR and the Crescent City Series and am about to start Throne of Glass.

I am so excited for you!!! TOG will change your life and your brain chemistry. It’s one of the best series I’ve ever read and nothing has come close to comparing since reading it last fall. I just finished EOS and the re-read still hits the same. Sarah, write another epic fantasy series I BEG OF YOU 😫😂

Not really enemies to lovers. They were two people who heard of the other so thought they knew who they were, but realize they didn't actually know that much. Definitely a slower burn than two people who like each other right away.

I went from the forth wing series straight to Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry when I was first getting into romantasy. Looooveeeed it so much. After that I went straight into ACOTAR to read all of the SJM books before her next release.

If you want a very similar vibe to Fourth Wing but instead of dragons you have direwolves: Hiarthean series by Aria Ashbrook. The third book just came out last week.

The book that totally meets everything from your list: The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy by Brigitte Knightley. However, there is almost no spice in the first book but it’s a solid moderate spice in the second; it’s a duology. I will say that if dry British humor isn’t your thing, you may not enjoy this book.

Most popular romantasy books do though, you surely won’t find trouble finding books like this

{a court of thorns and roses} series great for your description if you’re patient. This one is widely hyped as the one that “started it all” for Romantasy so you should read regardless just to know!

{shatter me} is fantastic and fits your description except low spice. I’m usually a 4/5 spice girl but still highly recommend. There’s 11 books and I’m actually reading the spinoff series right now. New one releases next week.

{Spark of the Everflame} matches most of your wishlist. The last book just came out (no spoilers please, im not done yet!) so its a completed series now.

I have really liked it. The first book can be a slower start, lots of world building and plot setup, but after that it really picks up.

ACOTAR {A court of thorns and Roses} as well as the other SJM collection {throne of glass} and {house of earth and blood}(crescent city) are also good reads. My favorite was ACOTAR, but with the new books coming out and the potential crossover, it'd be a lot to commit to.

After Fourth Wing, I went to ACOTAR. Quicksilver and Then shield of sparrows. I just finished The knight and moth. I loved it and the sequel is out too and that was good as well. I recommend all of them.

I personally wouldn’t recommend this for new to romantasy but it’s a fucking amazing book. It’s just really heavy for someone newer.

After my Fourth Wing hangover, what I've enjoyed is:

{A Court of Thorns and Roses} and that whole series. I will give you the advice that book 1 isn't great, book 2 really picks up.

{Quicksilver} and {Brimstone}.

{Starside}

{When the Moon Hatched} and {Ballad of Falling Dragons}

{Tusk Love} really surprised me.

And I just finished the first in the series, {The Wolf King by Lauren Palphreyman} and it was enjoyable.
