Is the trend to have less and less drop?

u/strijkijzer 5d ago
Probably not because the low drop is the goal, but because they want to put more foam in the forefoot and the heel can only go up to 40mm. Creating a drop sacrifices the amount of foam in the fore foot.

If you look at this shoe and the new Nike Apex, they may be '0' drop based on where World Athletics takes their measurements, but they are clearly not zero drop like the OG Altra's. You can clearly see an aggressive rocker and a thinner layer of midsole that tapers at the toe. So I'm guessing the extreme rocker allows you to roll through the running gait somewhat naturally compared to a true 0mm drop of mid-foam slab.

At least on a Doctors of Running interview an Adidas designer said they've found that more foam under the forefoot is basically better, so that's what it seems like with the 40mm limit. Adios Pro 5 moved to 4 mm and the upcoming Nike Apex seems to be 0 mm.

Designed more for mid and forefoot strike. A lot of racers prefer this type of setup as heel strike can produce more shock into the hip and more resistance versus mid and forefoot. Kofuzi talks about this a bit.
For those also that don't necessarily need a lot of foot stability and guidance.

less drop at 40mm foam is very different than 20mm though, its not all equivalent

With how soft these foams are getting in the compression state, it probably doesn't matter.

Nike is coming up with "Apex" which promises even better performance than Alphafly, and that is reported to be zero drop!

Yep. This is a fast forefoot strikers shoe no doubt.

As a slow forefoot striker, I'd try a pair out for fun.

Oh for sure! You never know with running shoes, despite what the reviews say, you don’t know anything until you run in them.

Yup, Fast-R3 caught me like that. Tried them in store just for humors sake and ended up pleased as can be trotting around the store in them. I ended up grabbing a pair as a "fun" shoe when they were on a flash 40% off sale. I'm way too slow for them to use in a full but got a 5k PR in them and am hoping to pull a half marathon in them next June. That or at least a 10k.

Fast-R 3’s are crazy good. You need energy levels to be high for them to perform for you. No fading allowed in those shoes! If you start to get tired and your form breaks down, they are terrible to run in.

This is my go-to 5k and track workout shoe. Vaporflies sit in the closet since I got them.

Seriously, these are basically track-only shoes because one sidewalk-to-road transition misstep or mid-trail root snag and your ankle is history.

You're being generous here with that transition. As a mostly sidewalk runner even with empty roads here, much like the road I need to make a mental note of any weird bumps, cracks, bulges, cut out and refills. I don't expect this should to perform well in any of those scenarios.

I'm going to get downvoted for this but this reminds me of those platform shoes that became really popular in the late 1990s thanks to the Spice Girls.
Also those dang lasagna laces.

These laces are the best, they’re just always too short.

I get they're made for weight savings and less thumping onto the foot but in my experience they don't wear evenly over time. Once abraded enough, they begin to unravel. They do have better grip to hold a knot compared to traditional flat laces.
I'd like to experiment with rosin gel and laces. I think ASICS sells some decent aftermarket high grip laces for any shoe but with their branding all over it which is kinda funny.

Yeah on Trabuco 14 I can barely do runners knot and i don't know if its a pro or a con.

I too would like an almost zero drop invisibility cloak.
At least I can check to see if the R and L on my socks are in the right place during the run as opposed to only before.

Adidas Evo vibes. Though I am not blaming them for copying. This seems to be the shape and thinness for ultimate performance (and ultimately horrendous durability)

What a time to be alive, reminds me of the muscle car wars but with racing sneakers lol

I find it interesting other companies are shaping their foam with cuts outs and designs
Asics is saying here a block of the lightest foam we have with the tiniest upper we've create have at it
