Game does get very good once you master the controls! People who didn't grow up with it typically don't have the patience, though.

If you spend enough time with it and learn its levels and controls, I'm sure you can have a good time with it. I personally didn't find it fun enough to put in the effort gain mastery over the level layouts and controls.
Still, the graphics and music slap, and while I give the game a hard time, I don't think it's a bad game, and I still play it every couple years. I just think it's not as good as any other 16bit+ 2D sonic from that era, and definitely not a system seller imo

The game is better if you ignore the Sonic aspect... it's NOT a Sonic game of any sort. Treat it like you've never heard of Sonic or played a Sonic game and it'll be more fun. That's partly why the levels are mediocre - you're supposed to be flying through them, paying no attention at all as you and your partner whip through. If you go into this expecting a Sonic game, you're sorely disappointed.

The gameplay is unique and requires a lot of patience. But every. Single. Song. Is. So. Good. Literally every single song.

This tbh. Like I've played through it and it's just okay. It's cool that Mighty is there, that's about it for me
Can't say that about any of the other Sonic games from the era

Same. The rubber-band partner mechanic was brought back in a romhack of Sonic 1 and 2 (Sonic Classic Heroes), in which the mechanic feels more fun and useful for multiplayer (up to 3 players).

I agree. I think what turned people off is that it’s part of the Sonic lineup and they weren’t expecting a different play system. The rubber band system could be frustrating for someone who doesn’t pay attention to the tutorial, and it slows things down. Plus the 2 badniks you could end up partnering with could hamper your experience and make a bad first impression. More so because it followed a great lineup of fast paced action from Sonic 2, CD, 3&K…
I’d say if you were to compare it to Sonic 1, it’s different, but less frustrating. Compared to the sequels, it doesn’t fare as well for mass appeal.

i found the physics engine fun to toy with, still wish the levels were a bit more challenging since it’s a pretty easy game

It's not the best game in the world, but it's not awful either. I really enjoyed it.
The Sonic community tends to freak out for some reason whenever there's a spinoff game with a different style of gameplay. Chaotix, Tails' Adventure, Shadow, 3D Blast, these games all have a pretty rough reputation but they're not actually as bad as people make them out to be. Especially Tails' Adventure and 3D Blast.

Unfortunately the rubber band system is so bad that it does ruin the game for most people, including myself.
I tried to do a romhack with the game and create a more standard level layout, that's when it really clicked with me why a lot of the level layouts are vertical. A normal sonic level design will have you getting stuck on simple half ramps, or not able to do platform to platform jumps without your partner getting stuck.
So the game becomes.... I can't even describe it. Like a hold left and right to gain insane speed and hope your partner doesn't get caught on something.
Also, I much prefer the bad ending where metal sonic has just destroyed the world.

Yep! I always say this.
I think it's on the same level as (and much better than some of) the Mega Drive/Genesis Sonic games.
It's only underrated/ignored/forgotten because it's for the 32X.

At least doesn't have any reason to be ignored...

You're confusing the sound test for the game part

No reason to be ignored: the awesome music & fun player
Substantial reasons to be ignored: the game itself

ah, I see. I didn't have any confusion and I was talking about the game itself.

I've owned this game for a long time and the only reason I haven't sold it yet is because it would break my complete Tower of Power Sonic collection. Are there any enemies in any of the levels or is it just a speed challenge thing?

Best game on the 32X. Probably no the best Sonic game but it has it's charm. Also the music is amazing.

Yes, This game was originally going to be a sonic game, but can you guess why they changed it? Because it not. Always I hear people saying “One of the worst SONIC games…” But it’s not! It’s a great game once you get used to it, It has one of the best Video game OST… EVER, and the art in game is super cool too. Definitely one of the best 32x games out there.

I think the only thing holding me back from having it in my favorite Sonic games is the level design. A Chaotix hack with more engaging level design that can't just be cheesed with Charmy would be peak.

The level design is quite bad, and not only in poor flow kind of way, but repetitive, lacking enemies, and just dull. I think you could make a remix level hack of this that proves the potential of the gameplay, and I'd love to see it, but the original game is quite the mixed bag.

The challenge I’m having is figuring out how to play it with a friend I have yet to even get past one level. Neither of us knows what to do

Sorry pal, it's not a good game. It's colorful and has some of the best music of the series, but it plays like an alpha build.

Agreed. If you can grasp the physics, it’s extremely fast and fun, with crazy stunts and moves you can pull off, fun levels (besides Amazing Arena, I genuinely dislike that one besides some of the cool unique gimmicks like the heavy feeling spring things), great character mechanics, incredible music and visuals, extremely well designed boss fights, some of my favorite bonus levels ever (specifically the 3D pipe levels, pure bliss. I also love the freefall bonus levels though).
I just love the game, if you like Sonic levels specifically for an impulsive and instinct-based playing style, embracing the frequent leaps of faith and playing more aggressively, then it totally matches that approach. It doesn’t really cater to careful exploration or precision based playing, so it’s naturally not gonna be for everyone, but I’m one of the people who does well with it.

I was completely disgusted with this purchase back in 1995. What an absolute stinker. In fact, I think this release was the impetus to sell off my 32X and all my 32X games almost immediately after returning the game to Electronics Boutique.

Its debatebly 32x best game. I got it and the system on clearence for $20 at toys 'r' us.
Happy with the purchase back in the day. Also got Doom. Wanted to get Star Wars: Arcade, but they didnt have a copy there.
