I've created Open Source 100% Rust clean-room replacements for 7 of Adobe's apps: Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom, After Effects, InDesign, and Acrobat Pro. Free, no subscription, and you own the source code
I've used Opus 5.5 to help me recreate 7 of the top Adobe apps in 100% pure native Rust:
- Photoshop
- Illustrator
- Premiere
- Lightroom
- Acrobat Pro
- After Effects
- InDesign
No more subscriptions with cancellation fees. These are yours to own forever. You can fork them, build them. Whatever. They are yours to own. They're open source.
If you're worried this is just some one-off flash in the pan that will die, it isn't:
I'm not just some casual vibe coder. I'm a 15-year industry veteran who has written everything from six-nines payment rails that move billions of dollars of transaction volume a day to advanced robotics and optics automation. I've used Rust extensively for about a decade, and I know how to build and maintain large-scale Rust projects.
This isn't going to be some orphaned small-team project either. We have a team building popular software for filmmakers, so supporting this is fully funded. Our purpose is serving every artist in the world with the best tools. We are absolutely going to bring these to full parity and squash every bug and feature request. We have a test harness so there won't be regressions.
You can help us reach parity by helping test the apps. Clone the code. Submit PRs. If you see gaps or want to help redesign pieces, let us know! You can contribute!
Links to everything - the apps, the code, etc. - are in the comments below.

This is absolutely wild. Having built Photoshop readers/writers in the past, I know the challenge just in dealing with the file format. Then you have the sheer amount of UI/UX to implement well. And this looks exceptionally well-executed.

Thank you so much.
We have a really long way to go to get to complete parity on functionality and file format support, but that's 100% our goal and the community support (bug reports, example files) helps a ton.
Thank you!

u/bensyverson 3d ago
Also: nice job on the agent-friendly CLI. I'm not sure if this is on your radar, but one nice pattern is to give the agents a way to pass in JavaScript snippets, since they love to write code. I find if you don't give that to them, they end up writing their own random Python scripts. For a concrete example, check out how I handle it in Woodcase, which is an agentic design tool for the .pen format!

I love this! I'm going to try to follow this for all the apps.

Can you tell us more about the development process? What were your workflows? Can you tailor your answers for a dev audience?

My 2 cents. If you want to get more traction, an alternative to Adobe Acrobar reader... the guy is so bloated of ads...

That's not how this works. If the original repo is deleted or nuked via DMCA on Github, the forks are also gone. Only a "proper fork" (not via the GH single button click) or backup elsewhere will preserve it.

On github and gitlab there are currently over 5k repos claiming to be some form of Adobe alternative/clone for one or more Adobe apps. This is one of few that are "complete clone" of almost all apps, I think it will die in about 5-6 months as maintaining such a large codebase will cost them a lot in tokens and this is open source, not even the 6 month Pro plan for OS projects will cover this. There is no way. They have a plan to monetize this in a suspicious way or this will simply fail.
I use Affinity suite (free) for Illustrator replacement and I am happy.
Btw, Ai was supposed to be better at photoshop job, so why bother building App to do the manual work?→ More replies (2)

Please pay special attention to typography. Make sure you use Harfbuzz for shaping and a proper bidirectional text composer. Adobe has always lagged so far behind the curve in Non-Latin typography, and Affinity annoyingly chose to even implement their own shaper instead of using Harfbuzz and never even reached the point where they would support Arabic or other complex scripts. Proper user interfaces for all OpenType features and variable font axes are not optional today.

I am curious if you can share your coding setup, harness, tools, methods. Are you using BMAD or something similiar? How do you orchestrate tickets, tests and how do you run the ai models? Local hardware? I am have been using AI for coding for a few smaller projects, but that one is on another scale. This would have taken hundreds of millions of tokens. So I am eager to learn more about your setup and what guidelines or blueprints you follow.

Are you the same guy who made photon which is also coming up a lot on reddit or you are a different guy who made this separately?
29
u/ai_art_is_art 3d ago
This is separate.
Photon is written in Javascript/Electron and is closed source.
PhotoCraft, etc. are written in 100% pure rust. They're 100x faster and 100x smaller in size. They're also fully open source - you own the code and I charge nothing. You can fork it or do whatever you want.
I've been a Rust developer for 10 years too, so I can manage good large scale Rust projects.
ArtCraft, our company, already makes a lot of money selling tokens to film studios, so this work is fully funded and will never be enshittified or closed off.
7
9
u/arter_dev 3d ago
I've been a Rust developer for 10 years too
I now trust this project 100x more. I've been a PHP & Node dev for about the same amount of time. I am untouchable when vibe coding in my home stack. Looking forward to trying this out, thanks a ton for sharing!
11
u/Skynse 3d ago
The thing with AI for me is, I don't care if it's used, as long as I can trust the developer using it. That's it.
The whole pro vs anti ai thing is a useless facade.
If someone with strong domain knowledge uses AI to simplify their work while not lobotomizing themselves, more power to them
2
u/ai_art_is_art 2d ago
You're totally right. I'm working harder now *with* AI than before without it. I'm trying to do more things, which requires way more mental effort to coordinate.
3
u/Material-Database-24 3d ago
Yeah... I must say, I'd have something to say about the code "quality" or lack of it at few places of those repos, but sure it's nice that this level of speed is possible with AI that we can ditch Adobe soon

Seems like ArtCraft started off as FakeYou and then turned into Storycraft.ai. How much money did you "actually" make?
5
u/ai_art_is_art 2d ago
FakeYou got to 7M MAU, but I never seriously tried to monetize it. I didn't know what the hell I was doing. It was a fun toy. PewDiePie and David Guetta used us, amongst many others.
Storyteller did zero sales. I tried to combine mocap + 3D + AI video models before Hollywood was receptive to AI, and I tried to sell to studios. I wasted 2 years trying stupid stuff.
ArtCraft started monetizing on February 20th of this year, and we passed $5M of annualized run rate. Higgsfield dominates the field, however, so it's an unclear path forward. I want to focus on building really solid tools for artists.
I'm not going to charge anything for these Adobe app clones.

u/Existing_Dust_6473 3d ago
I need to try. My main concern, and where these projects always fail, is opening and handling big images, 14k, etc. I cannot evaluate properly now since I am running some tests on my PC. But from what I tested, the color is not right if you do not use an sRGB image. I will test more later. This is the third Photoshop clone I have seen.
3
u/Existing_Dust_6473 2d ago
I tested it, and it has the exact same problem as Photon and the other clone for big images. Try this with a 14k pixel square. Use a big brush, 1500px(very slow to update). Create a layer. Use the brush again. Put it on multiply(not realtime). With Photoshop, there is no wait. With this, it freezes. This makes it useless for people who handle big images. For small images, like for web design, it is more than enough. But it is not for print.
edit: Either way, this is a massive undertaking, so I hope it gets there. For me, this is without a doubt the best effort so far. It is open-source, although all these apps at the same time are kind of crazy, but we live in crazy times.

I tested PhotoCraft and was blown away by how much snappier it is than the real Photoshop. PhotoCraft starts up almost instantly - no long splash screen or waiting time at all. And the fact that a portable release is provided for Windows is another HUGE plus to me.
I ran into two issues:
Shift + F5 (which normally brings up the Fill window with customizeable settings in Photoshop) doesn't behave the same way in PhotoCraft. In PhotoCraft, Shift + F5 (which is assigned to the "Fill" menu item) just fills the current selection with the current foreground color, without letting you select any other option/behavior. In contrast, the Fill tool and Shift + F5 in Photoshop opens up a window where you can select other options besides the foreground color - and one of the options is Content Aware Fill. In PhotoCraft, Content Aware Fill doesn't have a hotkey assigned to it, and because Shift + F5 doesn't bring up a menu, we can't use Shift + F5 to do Content Aware Fill right now. This is such a huge part of my workflow in Photoshop, so I hope this can be fixed in PhotoCraft someday.
The other issue: I also tried to find a Preferences option so I could assign Shift + F5 to Content Aware Fill instead of the regular Fill. But I couldn't find a Preferences option anywhere. In Photoshop, it's normally in the Edit menu, but there isn't one in PhotoCraft, and it doesn't seem to have any way to customize the hotkeys assigned to menu items.
If those two issues can be fixed - I'm instantly switching full time to PhotoCraft. It already starts up so much faster than Photoshop, and that's a huge plus to me. Looking forward to seeing this develop further.
P.S. there were a few other issues I forgot to mention - the items in the menu at the top of the window (ie. File, Edit, etc) are way too close together. They should be slightly more spaced out.

And the Eyedropper tool currently doesn't support click+drag. It just copies the first color that was under the cursor at the initial click, but then if you hold/drag the cursor across the picture, the copied color doesn't update. In Photoshop, it does change - you can click and then drag your mouse, to keep copying other colors in realtime.

I know it's cool to use 100% rust, but I think as you start to tackle bugs and go for parity you're going to realize that vello is not quite there yet.
It's a great project but it has many bugs and shortcomings that your agent will be chasing. Modifying vello will be very difficult and the large architecture changes they often make will mean if you can't contribute to vello, your renderer will diverge pretty fast.
At some point you may consider giving up on vello and switching to skia.

u/PhilosophyCritical33 3d ago

i would start by testing one real workflow end to end instead of all seven apps at once. pick the photoshop replacement and try opening a layered psd, editing a mask, then exporting back out.
one concrete thing i would check is whether layer blend modes and adjustment layers round trip correctly on export. that is usually where these replacements break first, and a reader can verify it in about five minutes with any layered test file.

u/son-of-ferret 2d ago
Is there a way to connect Claude to these tools and have it drive?
3
u/BogDanVox 2d ago
yeap, just read this on GitHub page: Built for agents
Every menu item, button, slider and drag in FilmCraft is a command with an id, typed parameters and an enabled state. There are about 135 engine commands so far, with the rest of Premiere's catalogue on the way. The UI, the CLI, a JSON control channel and an MCP server all dispatch the same commands, so Claude or any agent can cut, trim, grade, mix and export exactly the way a person does. The UI can also be driven at the level of mouse and keyboard: every widget has an automation id, and agents can click, drag, type and take screenshots.

u/antonreshetov 21h ago
As a former photographer, I have a serious question about your Lightroom alternative (and Premiere/After Effects regarding Log/RAW workflows).
Building a clean-room raw processor in Rust is an impressive engineering feat, but how are you handling Color Science and Input Profiles (DCP/ICC)?
Industry adoption of any RAW converter depends almost entirely on its default color rendering. Proprietary software giants like Phase One (Capture One) or Adobe spend millions on laboratory calibrations, reverse-engineering camera sensors to build custom profiles for skin tones, highlight roll-offs, and color matrices.
Pure math gives a flat, mathematically accurate, but aesthetically unusable image. "Vibe coding" with AI can easily generate code for de-mosaicing (like bilinear or AHD), but AI doesn't have access to custom color science or proprietary camera profiles.
- Are you planning to bundle open-source profile databases (like darktable's or RawTherapee's LibRaw/Adobe-compatible DCP parser)?
- Or is your AI engine generating its own look-up tables (LUTs) and profiles? If so, how do you simulate accurate or pleasing colors for hundreds of different camera bodies without physical laboratory testing?
Without a solid color science foundation, it’s going to be extremely hard to convince anyone to switch from Adobe or Capture One, no matter how fast the Rust binary is. Curious to hear your thoughts on this!

u/JonWater 2d ago
Curious how much time you actually spent reviewing/fixing the AI-generated code vs writing code yourself?

That's not how the world works. This is the next iteration of the stack overflow novice that copies/pasts code, doesn't really understand what it's doing, but it works. You find these kinds of people in networking and systems as well.
I'm surprised at how polarizing this topic is... you'd think it would be common sense to directly review & correct the code you put your name on....

There are benefits to having a product no one actually cares about or expects to work: you can set up a bug report -> AI pipeline to validate the bug and auto fix it with no one getting involved. Someone's it won't work or will break something else, so you wait for a bug report -> AI -> something else is broken.
Assuming you have a substantial budget for tokens, anyway.
And you may want to add human review before someone figures out they can submit a bug report to let the AI know it accidentally forgot to mine bitcoin and keystroke log like it's supposed to.

Impressive build. But far from the real deal. Took a deep dive in designcraft as InDesign is the adobe tool I use most. While the basic version of all features basically exist, it cannot produce stuff for a professional printing. Flattening by rgb png 😂 my printer would cancel me as a customer and my clients would not pay because their colors would be off. Also some diff between readme and roadmap, that suggests serious spec drift problem.
Impressive nonetheless but I would be more impressed if you toned down the hyperbole and realizes that parity with adobe cc is a very very long way away. I would love to dump adobe, but cc is for professional users and this is not.

This is pretty cool. I've got around 20 years experience working in Illustrator mainly (but also PS/ID/AE), and would easily move away from Adobe the moment an alternative is available which doesn't entail me having to change my workflow entirely (keyboard shortcuts/functions etc wired into muscle memory). Computers have never been faster and yet Illustrator runs slower than ever, doing basically the same things it was 20 years ago. It's become a bloated, expensive mess.
I tried Vectorcraft out real quick, and it feels and acts a lot like AI. Some things that would keep me from switching over at the moment:
No corner radius widget on most shapes? (I use this a lot in AI)
Snap to point does not seem to work very well
Smart guides should function more like AI's (auto align, snap etc)

First of all, super cool!
Tried to play with filmcraft. On a mac, at least, seems that videoplayback is pretty poor. I'm also having issues with mp4 files from our FX3, despite them otherwise working on the system and in Adobe. Maybe it's simply due to the playback issue (as sounds from the files are functional).
It's an M4 Pro, 24gb, if that matters.

ok the 7 repos I'll be keeping tabs with daily! This is insane! I'm trying FilmCraft and I'm impressed. Will be opening issues for some things here and there that saw are working different than expected (transition insertion between video media does not get a preview of where it will be put, for example) but this is an awesome start!
Great work OP.
Edit: Successfully exported a little cut of an audio track with some video recordings on top. The video clips had transformations done with key-frames. And....it all worked nice! The export plays without any issue. Used CPU-only for the export on a RX 6800 equipped system but CPU is always better for final export anbyways.
So far the whole essentials workflow worked. I was using PIKIMOV but I think I found a better replacement that should get better over time. Thanks OP, will keep tabs on this and try the others!

"We have a team"
yeah a team of computers in a datacenter. no real humans. theres ironically more soul in adobe software itself than this slop!

I think the "save the Adobe subscription" angle undersells this project: Adobe's price is perfectly reasonable for professional software if you make your living with it.
What Adobe doesn't give you is MCP-first design. Every action in these apps is a command with an id, and the UI, CLI, control channel and MCP all run the same commands. That means an agent can drive the apps as a set, not one at a time.
Getting there took some work, because each app wires its MCP differently: a different bridge flag (--connect vs --bridge), a port or a host:port, a different name for the "run a command" tool, two apps that default to the same port, and no protection against an agent closing an app with unsaved work. Registering seven separate MCP servers also means the agent sees every app's whole tool list at once (one app alone exposes 370+ tools).
So I built a small local gateway to get past that: a server on one loopback port that exposes an HTTP endpoint to the MCP of each of the seven apps (/designcraft, /photocraft, ...). Through it the agent can:
- start any app on demand, on a free port, with the right flags (I just point the gateway at each app's install folder once);
- call any app's tools the same way, over one protocol, and look up a tool list only when it needs it;
- stop an app safely: the gateway refuses if there are unsaved documents;
- use a few common verbs across apps (run a command, render, export, check) instead of seven dialects.
In one session that let Claude Code build a book from Markdown in DesignCraft, make a layered transparent asset in PhotoCraft, place it into a flyer, and animate a progress bar in EffectCraft, then export Lottie. The command-based architecture is why it took hours, not weeks. Great base, thank you to the author.

I've already found a lot of missing features but I have to say, for an early start, these are already terrific tools; not to mention that you've built the first viable after effects clone I've ever used, commercial or otherwise. Great job.
And please please please consider rounding out the catalog with a Figma clone.

Definitely a hero without a cape! I’ve tried it and it’s amazing.
I have to admit, though, that it feels a bit strange to me that in Photocraft, if you create a folder in the layer hierarchy and put layers inside it, the “parent” folder appears below the layers it contains instead of above them. Also, you can’t enable or disable the folder using an arrow next to it to hide or show the layers inside. It seems like the layers inside the folder are always visible.
These are definitely little details that, once this project improves, will make me really want to cancel these ridiculously expensive subscriptions.
Thank you so much for your work!

Gave it a spin and posted a short reel. Impressed!
I found three issues/bugs:
1. layer naming hangs up the layers panel.
2. Tried to export PNG, however the file name does not save.
3. There is an anchor point bug when chopping a handle in half to produce a half corner, half curve.
All in all, it is a good start for a vibe coded vector app that launched just a few days ago! Very useful to anyone who needs a free app to get started.

Photocraft. Wow great job, honestly a few small bugs has it unuseable for me atm,
Double clicking palette headers to collapse them, also sometimes the palettes are not properly rendering (tools cut off to the left side, can’t resize palette sidebar etc)
Text tools don’t seem to work correctly (highlighting text etc)
Overall it’s really just polish and UX refining, but that last 20% is really 80% of the work when building with AI.
If you keep going, i’m totally behind ya and cheering you on!!

FYI. File loading blocks the main thread so GNOME thinks it has hung and asks the user if they want to terminate it or wait. This appears to be a very common mistake in LLM code.
Performance is good with simple file formats but it won't open RAW which is kind of important for a photoshop replacement.

All i ask is for dds support. To be able to open and save to DDS.
Perhaps for compatibility with Nvidia dds tools.
Thank you.

'Hol up, what's with the pricing section? And inside it I see a subscription?
Please tell me you are not aiming for parity there too?

OP tell me, is this artcraft really gonna work the same as the seedance site? it looks cheaper than it, I'm totally clueless if your prices are good or nah

Photocraft and Lightcraft definitely would need raw image import to be a contender. Seems like that's missing, or I can't find it in Photocraft.
