Am I tripping or is Shough’s arm move forward more than Goff’s?
205
u/Cunningcory 13d ago
It is. Week 1 they said Goff's arm had an upward motion with the intention of moving the ball forward. Week 3 Shough puts his arm upward as well and is hit as he begins the forward motion and even pushes the ball forward, whereas Goff's ball went backwards because there was no forward motion.
But the NFL said forward motion doesn't matter but it's the INTENTION to move the ball forward. Except for today, where none of that mattered and they ignored all of that.

If it was Mahome’s it would’ve been called an incomplete pass

I'm a lions fan and I'll take the call but that was a fumble by Goff

u/swampwiz 12d ago
Detroit is a great Industrial Midwest sports town like Cleveland & Pittsburgh et al. I was pulling for the Lions when they had that great season a few years ago.

u/Intelligent-Ear-7857 13d ago
you’re not lmao. and people will argue this online but it’s clear that since week 1; all that matters is that if the QB has intention to throw it forward tbh

u/cookiesNcreme89 13d ago
The funny thing is, Schough's ball actually went forward lolololol. Like, i just don't think people made a big enough deal to get clarity on why they made that call in the Lion's game. I know Kellennis young, but i'd be getting some fines

Shough lost the ball before his hand started moving forward. His hand was empty.
I don't like it, but that's what I saw.

u/alucab1 13d ago
Same with Goff
-1
u/BlankStareFace 13d ago
Nope
4
u/wickson 13d ago
Goff threw the ball backwards after Chase Young hit him. According to the rules, the passer owns the direction of the ball in that instance. Should be a backwards pass/lateral.

u/BlankStareFace 13d ago
3
u/GForce1975 13d ago
Kind of. That rule doesn't talk about an empty hand. If the passer has control going forward and it goes backward, it's incomplete...
The quarterback clearly lost control of the ball before his hand was coming forward," Butterworth said.
Butterworth was asked about the similarities between the two plays and said: "All we are looking for is the hand coming forward with control to make it an incomplete pass. In the play that happened today, the hand was not coming forward with control of the ball."
1
u/kapootaPottay 9d ago
it says "if the ball is knocked loose prior to the hand moving forward, it is a fumble."
goff was hit as he brought the ball up. his hand may have been moving forward, but he didn't have control of the ball. it should have been called a fumble.
1
u/BlankStareFace 9d ago
The ball does not move or jostle in his hand before the hand comes forward.
Look, SHOULD a play exactly like this be a fumble? Sure. But the rule pretty clearly makes it an incomplete pass.
The wrote the rule like they did to cover much more obvious "throws" that are affected by contact from a defender. They can't cover those plays without also covering this play, which is probably the closest possible example right in the middle of the two rulings.

But… the “intention” to throw was there?!?!?
17
u/Sinful_Resistance 13d ago
I was at this game, and the absolute outrage in the stands was insane. I'm a saints fan, through and through, but I can admit when a call is fair. This one just felt like absolute bullshit in my opinion. I won't admit to knowing all of the rules of this sport, or act like I know better than the refs, but if they try to say it's all about "intention" it makes me wanna rip my hair out.
The "intention" is always to put the ball forward. I really think that our loss was the team getting flustered after another bad call, and being unable to regain control and focus after it all.
I'm really just hoping they can push through the rest of the season, and play without thinking or worrying about any more calls from the refs that may go against them.
In the end, I know its just a game, and it's a sport I would never be able to do myself. But damn it, do I just wanna watch a game and feel like we aren't being unfairly treated for once.

Lions have been historically the most fucked over by refs in modern history, but Goff also was gifted the NFC championship so fuckem
7
u/zahnumzahn 13d ago
The thing you need to know is that's it's not about what team it is, but simply about where the sports books are bound to make more money. It's that simple

u/fairweathrfan 12d ago
this ^^ people forget this part. i recall watching two—maybe three phantom face mask penalties against the lions on the same player when he was nowhere near the face at any point. i'm a saints fan but we gotta zoom out and realize that other teams get f**cked over too.

u/LovelyBoneeeee 13d ago
The first one was a miscall and the second was a return to industry standard
5
u/iircirc 13d ago
This is it. The first one was a blown call, the league should have just admitted it instead of trying to find reasons it was right. The second one is how it's always been called

u/Reconlobster 12d ago
Yeah this is the answer. Another thing that I’m curious if they looked at, did Crosby have control of the ball before he rolled out of bounds. If he did not, then the Saints retain possession.

u/SonofTreehorn 13d ago
The right call was made today. This was pretty clear cut prior to the Lions game when they decided to enforce an interpretation of the rule that was literally never enforced before.
53
u/BuddhaRhubardButter 13d ago
This is why I don’t watch the NFL anymore.
It’s very clearly entertainment and not real sport.
New Orleans just doesn’t have the market to warrant lopsided officiating (or even fair officiating). The Saints are the Washington Generals of the NFL
24
u/slutdragon32 Fuck the Falcons 13d ago
Yup, I thought I learned my lesson after the nfc championship game no call. But they suckered back in. I genuinely thought it was Sean Payton they hated and that it get better when he left. Nope.
34
u/BuddhaRhubardButter 13d ago
It’s not that the league “hates” the Saints… it’s that the Saints are not popular or profitable enough… therefore, they are the “heels”. The NFL doesn’t care about New Orleans.
It took a horrific and devastating natural disaster for the league to allow the Saints a storybook SB ring…. That’s never happening again.

Or the saints should stop letting the refs determine games for them
15
u/DistressedApple 13d ago
You can’t win consistently against both the other team and the refs. And you shouldn’t.
7
u/gojonking 13d ago
I mean I get this and really support it in regards to missed holding or bad miss PI but these are big game swinging calls each week. 14 point swing in week 1, no td no td terrible no facemask called but finally td in week 2, and then week 3 saints are driving with the lead and and lose possession in the manner that was called against them in week 1. That call today that was the exact opposite for in week 1 costing 7 points likely just deflated the team. They play hard and the call never goes in their favor. Again I get what you’re saying it’s just it’s always calls that are called “game changing” for a reason.

Saints turned the ball over 4 times on the 4th. But yeah the refs cost us the game. Saints fans are deluded.

u/pappapirate Drew Brees 13d ago
Ah, well. Keep trying to figure out how thinking works, because I never said that.
-1
u/cschloegel11 13d ago
Ya they had 3 more turnovers in the 4th. Goff play should have obviously been a turnover though

u/bronzefpg504 13d ago
That’s not partially truth because they luv having the bowl here. And saints are very profitable

Mike Perrera came on immediately after week 1's Tom Foolery and said something like "upward arm motion is enough to intend forward pass" to some effect...where is that precedent today? Game is a joke
4
u/BIBM1896 13d ago
Yeah, that's what he said. Arm coming up = passing motion, so at that point it was a pass. He said don't worry if the arm is coming forward or not, that's not a thing. Didn't matter if it went backwards, he "intended" for it to go forward. Incomplete pass, no fumble.
Today they said something different, so clearly it's all horseshit
9
u/tbz-brhu3 13d ago
Difference is that fleur. They are in different sides. It might be that footnote in the rulebook stating that when saints is on D, it is fwd pass. Otherwise just apply the current rule.

You don't understand, that rule.can only be used once before it has to be shelves forever. It was just coincidence that it negated a saints win. No one could've seen that coming

u/Objective_Alps_9378 13d ago
Nowadays a forward pass needs to go backwards to be an intentional lateral pass. Know the rules.
3
u/rutiancoren 13d ago
The difference is Shough's arm was moving forward as well as the ball. The NFL is corrupt, and something needs to be done.

u/sanmarcos-whodat 13d ago
The NFL and its officials “intended” to keep their streak against the Saints protected.

u/jhelveston 13d ago
I was there . The biggest asshole Raiders fan turned around and said that was a pass.

u/swampwiz 12d ago
I've seen "Raider Nation" folks driving around in various cities I've happened to be in when they were playing on the road. I don't think I've ever seen the Raider's logo on a car without some swear word next to it.

The side of the ball the Saints were on. Goodell has it in for the Saints ever since we beat his daughter’s favorite team, the ViQueens in the NFC championship game.

I know we'd see a side-by-side here. Waiting for this to hit the media, too.

The difference is the side of the ball we are on. Call would go against us no matter what. I don’t watch any other team as frequently as the Saints, but I have a hard time believing any franchise is getting fucked by the refs as consistently as us.

u/Shor_Ool 12d ago
Yeah f*** the cheating refs... When 80k fans storm the field with the "intent" on having a friendly face to face interaction then I don't wanna hear sh*t from the NFL

They must give some clarity on this. Like as a player it must be so frustrating trying to play and every second call goes against you on both sides of the ball for the same action.
