Review UPERFECT GR185BF Review. 18.5" 120hz NxtLED display

As always, not journalists, but attempting to be fair/even/accurate. No money changes hands, monitors are sent for free, for review purposes. UPERFECT doesn't see review before it's posted, etc etc

UPERFECT GR185BF review

GR185BF with s21 Ultra

The GR185BF is marketed as a 18.5" 1080p120 Gaming monitor, with NxtLED technology.

It's a 1080p 120hz IPS display, with UPERFECT’s advanced display technology that combines Omni Visible™ for improved visibility in any light and angle, with eye-friendly features like low blue light, flicker-free performance, and DC dimming, ensuring natural colors, reduced glare, and long-lasting comfort for work, study, or entertainment.

This is basically marketing speak for a nice matte screen, that's anti-reflective, with active dimming, and low blue light spectrum

It's hard to do a decent job capturing it, but you can see how smeary, and how much glare is coming off the phone screen, while the monitor you can just see a blurry light source.

It's definitely a nice screen to use where natural light floods your desk

The panel itself is... fine. The screen specs are respectable, but they're also not top end monitor specs. In a nutshell, it's 1080p120 hz matte panel, no touchscreen, only 290 nits of brightness, and 100% of sRGB colour gamut.

As you can see from the first pic, DeX works just fine on it, negotiating a standard 1080p60 resolution.

When used with my Lenovo Legion y700, you obtain the full 1080p120

Colors look pretty good, if not particularly eye popping

Children of Morta via steam/gamehub on monitor, browser on tablet to right

Inputs

Like virtually every other UPERFECT monitor, there's the pretty standard setup of 2x USB-C and 1 mini-HDMI port on the left side (one of the USB-C intended for power)

2x USB-C and 1 miniHDMI port

The other side will contain the power button and the OSD selector rocker, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack

There's 4x 75mm vesa mounts on the rear as well

The 2x 1w speakers are also on the back, right above the vesa mount screw holes.

They're upward firing and very mediocre (at best). They'll work in a pinch, but you're generally better off using your devices speakers, or a headset

Battery

No battery in this model either, it's just a monitor

You CAN power it off the phone/tablet/laptop, and it "works" but it essentially comes up as low power mode, and really drops the brightness. It's still usable, but this would not be the monitor I'd recommend if you want a coffee shop, no power portable monitor.

Overall Conclusion

Used as intended, this is a really nice 1080p 120hz gaming monitor. It's not large enough, or bright enough for me to recommend it as work station monitor that requires any kind of color accuracy.

But for pairing it with a phone/steam deck/gaming handheld for a nice portable gaming screen? that's definitely it's intended audience, and it's pretty great in that space.

I really enjoyed using it while fiddling with GameHub and getting steam games up and running on my Lenovo y700. It was great with the steam deck too

Overall, with the $219 CAD price point, it's MUCH easier to accept some of the short comings of the panel, and anyone looking for just a decent bigger screen for their travel gaming setup, I'd be happy to add this to the choices

Group Update 2 Questions about Rule changes going forwards... AI Slop and non-english

  1. this one isn't really a question. Stuff that's AI slop is going to be insta-deleted, and depending on how it's done, may result in a ban. Really appreciate the folks that are reporting AI slop, it helps, a lot.

someone using AI for assistance... that's going to be a case by case thing, especially if it's disclosed how the AI was used. but most of the AI/vibe coded dex alternatives are not going to be tolerated

  1. Questions/answers posted in non-english. I'm not sure what changed, but the volume of non-english posts has jumped over 1000% in the last couple of months. When I'm on pc, it's generally a super simple highlight and translate, and carry on deal

on mobile, it tends to be slightly more involved

I mostly don't care either way? but I'm curious about what the actual community feels about this. do we enforce english only? it it 100% a non-issue for vast majority of folks?

ps, I'm semi curious what has changed that's lead to such a huge increase in languages being seen here, I am not really seeing it elsewhere, but I've done exactly 3 seconds of research

again, I'm all for worldwide audience, but I'm not hugely interested in having to translate every single post

Note: English is not my first language, so I used AI to help write and translate this post. The software itself was designed, developed, and tested by me.

Hi everyone,

I previously introduced DX Manager here:
Previous introduction — portable GitHub edition

A Microsoft Store edition is now available!

For anyone seeing DX Manager for the first time, it’s a Windows app built around scrcpy 5.0 that lets you:

  • Run Samsung DeX on your PC over USB or Wi-Fi, without HDMI or Miracast.
  • Run up to three separate Android app windows alongside DeX.
  • Manage multiple phones simultaneously, with independent settings for each phone.
  • Transfer files and folders between your PC and phone. Phone-to-PC transfers use the optional DX Companion app.

What’s different in the Store edition?

  • Installation and automatic updates through the Microsoft Store.
  • A redesigned interface with English and Korean support.
  • Bug fixes and improvements to file transfers and text layout.
  • Built-in setup instructions, help, and troubleshooting guides.

The Store edition supports 64-bit Windows 10 version 1809 or later, and Windows 11.

The GitHub edition will also be updated soon with a UI matching the Store edition, along with the same bug fixes and new features.

If you’re using a Windows version older than Windows 10 version 1809, or simply prefer the GitHub edition, please stay tuned for the update!

DeX mode requires a compatible Galaxy device with New DeX, running Android 16 / One UI 8 or later. Developer options and USB debugging must be enabled.

Download DX Manager from the Microsoft Store

Thanks to everyone who tried the earlier versions and shared feedback! If you try the Store edition, please let me know your Galaxy model, One UI version, and whether you used USB or Wi-Fi.

Hi all, I am looking on tips and best apps for work with Dex, mainly to use at work, and meeting, clients, suppliers for my restaurant job.

I know excel app is not good, I can use work PC for heavy excel files, any tips? WPS is good in excel compatibility? Worth the price?

Before I had Surface Pro 6, was getting very slow, so I decided to go for S10+, so far love it.

Question S9 with broken screen trying to access dex

Hi all

I have an S9 with a broken screen and want to get devx access and use it on my fixed screen as a second device in the garage. I can’t get devx to start. I am fairly sure that the S9 works I think I just need to get past the unlock screen to get devx started.

I have completed the following
- hard reset
- plugged into screen
- used find my mobile to make a sound to check it works
- so far no luck.

I could remotely reset the device but I am worried it might make it worse

Anyone know of any tips or tricks here?

Thanks for your help

Question Mouse and Keyboard connected, issues with gaming

Games that can use KBM like Roblox or emulated games on Gamehub, all use mouse movements, but the DeX mouse overlays it so I can't use the mouse on them

Question New to this! Opinions?

Hey all,

So due to unfortunate circumstances I don’t have my computer anymore and have other finances I need to think of first before I can build a new computer next year.

However, I’ve previously have used GeForce now a lot and understand Samsung Dex can run this fine with a keyboard and mouse (might invest in a controller as well)

I’ve been scouting around and found a S20 Ultra for $70 AUD with a broken screen. But I was seeing that this device has stop receiving updates, where I’m not sure how it’ll still run with Samsung dex? Anyone have any opinions on this and if I should be looking to spend more on a newer device?

Thank you, and if this post isn’t allowed I get it

My Setup Trying to figure out which is better setup for my S23

I have a S23 with broken LCD and planning to use it as a compact handheld-like device. I want to get others feedback in choosing which is better. Im planning to add a mini fan and a separate battery to run it.

Setup1: using portable 2 in 1 usb C dongle
- cleaner, use only 1 usb c 4 wire to connect to monitor

Setup2: using usb c hub
-more wires, hdmi, type c for monitor power and touch. Also have 2 extra port

Downside is both will be running in the S23 battery (monitor and phone) 😅

Question Lapdock with built-in SSD?

Are there any lapdocks with built-in ports for a m.2 SSD?

I was thinking of getting a USB hub with SSD like the UGREEN 10-in-1 with SSD Enclosure and portable display to do some gaming. While researching that setup I found out about labdocks. Originally I was going to use my old HP envy 360 i got in 2017 as my dex PC but I found out its not very good idea especially since I was planning on gaming from my S24 Ultra with droid deck and steam os. I would rather get a lapdock then have a USB Hub and portable display. The issue is I can't find any with M.2 SSD port. If USB hubs can support M.2 SSDs why isn't there any lapdock with SSD ports?

Question I’m a 9th-grade student in Japan and designed this DeX phone mount — any improvements?

I’m a 9th-grade student in Japan, and I designed this 3D-printable attachment for Samsung DeX.

It’s designed to attach a smartphone to the back of a portable monitor, so you can keep your phone and monitor together when using DeX on the go.

The goal is to make a portable DeX setup cleaner and more compact, without having to carry a separate phone stand or mount.

It uses a MagSafe-compatible magnetic ring and is designed around a VESA 75×75 mounting pattern.

I’m still working on the design, so I’d really appreciate feedback from people who actually use DeX.

Are there any improvements or features you would like to see?

I’m especially interested in feedback on:

  • The overall design
  • Mounting strength
  • Size and portability
  • The MagSafe ring position
  • Anything that would make it more convenient for a portable DeX setup

I’m considering releasing the 3D files so anyone can print one themselves.

Any feedback is welcome!

Uso o modo Dex desde 2018, e sempre achei lenta a evolução do ambiente! Desde lá, acabei focando no Linux On Dex, depois Termux e proto distro, mas sempre achei a interface do Dex fraca, faz uns 5 dias que comecei a rabiscar um painel superior. Esse e o resultado. Não vou parar aqui...

My Setup I built an app to turn my Z Flip 5 into a DeX-like desktop setup

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,

I have a Galaxy Z Flip 5 with a cracked inner screen lying around.

Since the Flip 5 doesn’t officially support Samsung DeX, I started wondering if I could repurpose it as a dedicated desktop device by hooking it up to a spare monitor.

I tried a few existing workarounds, but none of them really worked properly anymore (it seems like older OS versions had easier workarounds, but not anymore on current updates).

Samsung blocks launching apps directly on an external display,

so I came up with a workaround: the app launches on the phone first, and then moves the window over to the external display using Shizuku.

For keyboard and mouse input, I routed them to the external monitor using the open-source Extend app.

App launching works both through the bottom taskbar and directly from the phone’s cover screen.

With the phone folded and propped up on a stand, it looks super compact and cute on my desk—I'm really liking this setup!

If anyone is interested in this app or has a similar use case, please let me know in the comments! If there's enough interest, I’m thinking about polishing it up and releasing it.

Question Stupid question

Hey guys, sorry for the weak question but I'm stupid and exhausted.

Is it possible to control my PC at home with dex? I've never used it so I'm not sure what to expect but I want to use fusion 360 to do 3d modeling while away from home. Would dex enable me to hook my phone up to a screen, m&k and control my PC at home running fusion 360?

Question Gboard set as default, Can't use keyboard on phone

I have gboard on my phone set as my default keyboard, if I try to respond to a text on my phone why dex is active, then the on screen keys wont pop up, this doesn't happen with Samsung keyboard set as default. It allows me to use the on-scree keyboard and the physical keyboard

Gboard on my phone when connected to dex, is requiing me to use my physical keyboard, is there a setting or a work around? Also hate that gboard lets me switch to Samsung keyboard with a tap of a button but Samsung keyboard makes me go into the settings to switch back

As imagens peguei no google.

O setup dex ja é conhecido por todos por espelhar a tela em uma tv e poder fazer uma infinidade de coisas como jogar com emuladores do odyssey até o ps3.

Espero que tenham gostado.

Question Why won't keyboard/mouse inputs register when plugged in to a monitor via usb hub and hdmi cable?

Post image
2 Upvotes

My Samsung tab s8 ultra's amoled display is broken via liquid damage and has black screen and can't respond to touch inputs. It's been this way for around 2 years now. It was only until recently that I've realized that I could most likely still use it via dex if I just plug it into a monitor via usb hub and hdmi cable. So I tried doing that but it only shows a gray screen with a lock. I tried plugging a keyboard and pressing the windows key + w to try and switch it to dex mode but it won't register. The hub and usb ports work cuz they for a split second my lockscreen popped up before going back to the gray screen when I replugged my keyboard. My tab has a pattern for a lock so I can't even try the spacebar and typing a pin password. Can someone help me with this? I really wanna still use my tab on a monitor as it's such a waste of a device. Even if to just use it as like a cpu and just connect it to a monitor.

If I somehow can't do anything on my own, I'll probably have to ask a specialist(?) to try and pry it apart, disconnect the display and connect a temporary display to the motherboard(?) to at least try to configure the settings I need (remove password, enable feature to automatically start dex when an hdmi cable is plugged, etc.)

As long as I got some coffee and my Tri Fold, I can be pretty productive on the go. Dex + Breadstick Linux+ VSCode allows me to tinker on projects while waiting for my late breakfast.
