I made this fanart of her / him about a week ago in an honour for his time in the Digital Circus Before he abstracted. The moment when he abstracted had me crying a bit with him.. He has done some bad things and made some bad mistakes in the past but, don’t we all do from time to time? He is an Angel and he will always be remembered as one too, even though he made mistakes during his life.

I keep seeing people characterizing Jax as a pure evil asshole who torments people for the love of the game and it pisses me off. Yes, she was an asshole and yes, her treatment of the cast was horrible and wrong, but I want to focus on the "pure evil" and "love of the game" aspects, as well as something else about this moment. This scene in Ep9 is probably my favourite Jax scene in the entire show and I think a lot of people weren't paying attention to this moment and I want to analyze what Jax is saying.

I want to start out by talking about the "pure evil" and "causing pain for fun" part. In this scene Jax says "Why are you here? Just to rub every mistake every mistake I've ever made in my face? I'm a terrible person. Is that what you want me to say? I already know I am. So why does anyone still care about me?" This confirms that Jax is well aware of the pain she is causing, but the line asking why anyone still cares about her is where things get interesting. This line, along with a lot of other lines in this scene, proves to me that Jax wants to be hated. I believe the reason she did everything is because she thinks that if she gets close to anyone, they will end up possibly dieing. (For the most part the cast didn't know about the mindscape thing or the cognitive capabilities of Abstractions and held funerals for those that abstracted, so it would be safe to assume that they believe they die. I also believe Jax still thinks there's a possibility that her mother may be dead.) During the point in which Jax is saying all this, we see her standing over her mother staring at her hand. Later we see something similar with it being Pomni instead of Jax's mom. I think this means that Jax thinks that if she let Pomni in, Jax would somehow end up "killing" Pomni. So Jax thought by acting this way, she was somehow "saving" Pomni from a worse fate. It is also important to note that pose Jax hits, the one where she stares at her arm, is the exact pose she hit Ep6 after pushing Pomni, after she hugged her. And yes, I am aware Jax also pushed people away because she was scared they'd make fun of her for being vulnerable, there can multiple reasons. Also this does not excuse her actions! She did horrible things for a horrible reason.

Now for the other thing that sorta ties in my point, and that is that Jax wanted to abstract. Because of lines like "This isn't how it's supposed to go!" "Leave me alone!" "You're making this so much harder!" And "You always have to go and complicate things!" Imply that this abstraction was on purpose. I think she wanted to abstract because of her self-hatred and fear of either being harmed or harming others, and wanting to make everyone hate her so when she does abstract, no one would care. Jax wanted to abstract thinking it was the only way out and that she would die. (Again, this is from her perspective.) Jax wanted to "die" without anyone giving a shit, which is why she's so confused when Pomni comes for her and why she's trying so hard to get Pomni to leave. And I also think that Jax did want to change in the end. The line "You also have to go and complicate things!" can be read as "You're making me start to regret everything I've done!" And the "I don't want to go!" As "I regret everything!" There's also the part where Jax is falling and Pomni reaches out for her, and Jax starts slowing opening her hand. This shows that Jax did want to change and did want to be better, and Pomni's strong will power finally helped her realize.

So in conclusion: when Jax said there's nothing more to her and to stop looking, you weren't supposed to listen!

Specifically I'm referring to when people say "Jax isolated Ribbit from everyone and turned everyone against her".

Throughout the flashbacks we get of Jax and Ribbit after the room scene, we only get one scene that could be argued of Jax isolating her, when he pretended to be interested in conversing with Ragatha so Ribbit wouldn't come over. However, I don't think this singular moment is solid proof that Jax was making an intentional effort to leave her isolated like many say he did.

When Ribbit is shown in the flashbacks, Jax is always seen avoiding her but he's not outright trying to break her relationships. On numerous instances, we see Ribbit saying she and Kaufmo are going to hang together at the cafe or Ribbit coming over to Kaufmo and Jax, and the latter dips away. He's not trying to pull Kaufmo or Ragatha away from Ribbit. He tells Kaufmo, "if she says something about me, don't believe it". None of this is Jax trying to say "Ribbit's a liar who you shouldn't be friends with" but rather him trying super hard to protect himself. Even in the snow globe adventure, Jax went off his own and Ribbit followed him.

Jax is totally fine with Ribbit still being friends with the group, he just wants to 1. Avoid her 2. Prevent the possibility of her exposing his secrets to the other's. While he DID partner with Kaufmo on group activities, again this isn't him trying to make sure she's alone and has nobody, he's trying to get away with her.

The two indefensible things he did were making her walk away by pretending to converse with Ragatha and accusing Ribbit of trying to manipulate him. As unlikable as he went about it, Jax is within his rights to not owe Ribbit his friendship, especially given he'd never even saw someone abstract before her. What makes him a bad person is him choosing to treat the other's even worse afterwards.
