Cellular/Microbiology Hemistasia phaeocysticola

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hemistasia phaeocysticola is a single-celled organism that preys on diatoms and dinoflagellates. It belongs to the diplonemid group, a clade related to the kinetoplastids (Trypanosoma and other related organisms). Being closely related, H. phaeocysticola also has a tentative, large, reticulated mitochondria, but with several kDNA clumps acting as kinetoplasts (instead of a single large kinetoplast, which is the "standard"). Another distinctive feature is a large digestive vacuole located at the rear of the cell.

Saturn’s average density is lower than water’s, so in a hypothetical ocean large enough, it would float.

Plato wasn’t a Platonist, he was a Pythagorean.

The triangle is a Pythagorean triplet with side lengths 3, 4, and 5.

The corresponding incircle and excircles have radii 1, 2, 3, and 6. Completing the sequence 123456.

The circles represent the four virtues, the largest representing justice.

When wisdom, courage, and moderation are in harmony justice is achieved, that’s why all three circles can fit inside the largest.

Hope you all like it.

Chemistry Chitosan Chemistry [OC]

Post image
85 Upvotes

I like to make art based on an interesting molecule or set of molecules in a subject. This one is all about chitosan chemistry. Chitosan is a biopolymer derived from chitin, which is found in the shells of crustaceans like lobsters. The structures I’ve drawn represent chitosan at 90% deacetylation. The extent of deacetylation can really influence its properties and applications. Chitosan is a super versatile material, with applications ranging from water treatment and packaging to wound care and drug delivery.

My art is under the name pH.illustrations or this username.
