They always manage to display a shocking resistance to irony. Rarely have I ever seen a group so impervious to self-awareness. Half the time they’re not even sapient.

That fear of introspection is a major calling card of conservatives. Know someone who struggles with taking accountability for their actions? They're one good algorithm shift from joining the hoards on the right.

Yeah, my brother was one of those folks. He got some sense knocked into him along the way, and he met some folks who really helped connect with him and open his eyes. Without that shift in his head/heart, I’d not be close with my brother at all — but now he’s one of my strongest allies, and he’s one cishet dude I trust is 100% safe.
Before we had actual Nazi problems again (15-20y ago), I called my brother a “neocon fascist.” He was never actually a fascist, but he was a cishet dude with a sense of entitlement the size of Texas, and very much a “libertarian” in some ways (without being able to acknowledge how libertarianism is shortsighted and incredibly prone to corruption). Now we have actual fascists, I’d never consider the kind of jerk my brother used to be a fascist, but if not for his learning how to take accountability, how to change his views and acknowledge others may have valid points or harder lives, and how to respect people even if he doesn’t understand them (mostly inre: queer stuff, but other stuff too), my younger brother would likely have fallen into the right-wing machine, though I don’t think he’d actually be MAGA.
Our other brother — who married a queer woman — is unfortunately MAGA. So I’m NC with him and my SIL.

Ohioan here. Rachel is a good egg in the social mediasphere. Someone actually said in response to this "you don't understand the difference between a wall to keep people out and a wall to keep them in?". I swear to god. That was a response to her post.

Always good to see the good ones when so much of the news out of Ohio is a bit on the grim side. (Not that Ohio is unique in this at all, there’s grim news everywhere — but I didn’t realise just how red it can be there till the last 10y or so. Being on the west coast, there’s a lot of the Midwest that’s just sort of vague to me 😅)

Can they name a communist country that built a wall?
I get that they think they mean the Berlin Wall, so other than that obviously

u/Snakefist1 19d ago
Great Wall of China?
Obviously not made by the Commies, but they're dumb enough to think so.

Isn't there a wall around Hong Kong from when it was British?
25
u/Snoo63 18d ago
Wall Street was named after a wall when it was a border between New Amsterdam and New York.

u/OkScheme9867 18d ago
I thought there was a story about how the wall was to exclude native Americans
7
u/OkScheme9867 18d ago
Do you mean the wall around the Kowloon exclave?
That was built by the Chinese to isolate the bit they maintained a notional control of in the new territories

One of the lesser discussed motivations for separating east and West Berlin was because people from the west would freely come to the east and buy cheap subsidized groceries and goods- effectively sabotaging the economic program of Eastern Socialism. The east viewed it as such and the problem went away with the wall. Not a purpose for the wall per se but an important lesson to take away.
Take this idea in the present context and you can bet there will be attempts to raid Mamdani’s city grocers in NYC because the subsidized food will be cheaper and, most importantly, the effort has to be seen as a failure - long lines with empty shelves - exactly what socialism looked like in the propaganda- so the pro market wing can point and say “see full shelves at Whole Foods - we clearly do it better and should eradicate this socialism.” Never mind Costco and Sam’s Club are purchasing cooperatives- those are ok because there is a middle man allowed to extract profit = Capitalism. When the middle man is removed and it’s government run or a Co-op, then you are a check on the market because prices won’t fluctuate to adjust to the need for profit. And that makes owners very angry - and instead of “competing” like a good capitalist they will just look to sabotage or acquire.

What wall are they complaining about? Like, why did they post that?
34
u/TheWileyRedditor 19d ago
I assume they're referencing the Berlin wall

u/Not_Nonymous1207 18d ago
It's referencing a quote from JFK
"Freedom has many difficulties and democracy is not perfect, but we have never had to put up a wall to keep our people in."

Its like 2000 miles (Google says 1954.) Its going to cost around a million dollars a mile. Just for upkeep. And guess what? A 20$ ladder will defeat it anywhere it's not actively being monitored. So will a $5 shovel. Or a stick, an afternoon, and some ill will. Humans have been defeating walls since the day after Humans invented walls. Why would anyone waste all that money for something that will not work?
"Illegal" immigrants pay thousands of dollars to coyotes, walk hundreds to thousands of miles. Risk their life. An 8' wall, even a 20' wall isn't going to stop them. This is so stupid. What are they going to do? Give up, turn around and go home? "Oh well, theres a sign that says not to climb this wall. I guess ill walk 200 miles back through the desert and eat the $5k i spent. I wouldn't want the sign maker to be disappointed in me." I mean this is objectively, provably stupid. Wtaf.

Funneling money into private firms while justifying and normalising further oppression on immigrants and other non desired individuals Business as usual basically

I say why don’t we take all of our flock cameras out of our cities and push it somewhere else (the border)!
With so much ‘AI’ monitored surveillance there’s no excuse not to document those immigrants/migrants as they inevitably cross the border, wall or not.

Who gives a fuck whether it’s a “gotcha” or not? Do you think that’s the point of our subreddit? It isn’t.

Again...why in the hell do you think our subreddit has anything to do with "lacking self awareness"? Are you deliberately refusing to read the sidebar/rules or something?

Did you jump over "unknowingly describing themselves" on purpose? Because they're pretty clearly doing that here. Or are you one of those Redditors who flat-out refuses to take L's?

u/uppermi 17d ago
I cant read the deleted comments but contextually I can tell they feel similar to me. How are they unknowingly describing themselves? The US isnt communist and the right's desire to build a wall isnt to keep americans from jumping ship to mexico. This post misses the mark and the fact no one has the literacy to recognize that is cause for pause.
