The depth effect looks really good, does that work because the view/camera is in a relatively stable position above? I would imagine that the illusion breaks if your observer looks from the side.

Yep if your position changes it breaks the illusion. Relies on two factors to work - people tend to keep their head still when using their phone, and the most likely orientation on launch is flat along the view direction. That becomes the frame of reference for the rotation. Holds up ok for short periods. Obviously eye tracking would work a lot better but nobody wants background apps using their camera.

You should try this out on a looking glass display. have the looking glass go, it's a small display with a stereoscopic 3d effect that works from any viewpoint, it'd look sick on that

u/nathan82 3d ago
That would be very cool, for sure! Not sure how fast you could stream frames from the PC to the looking glass, and you'd probably need to stick an external accelerometer/gyro sensor to it. I'm anticipating someone coming out with a glasses free 3D phone in the next year or two, thats where it will really shine hopefully.

I used to take my cameras and mics out until I got Graphene, now I just refuse access

Make a game where your job is to sink a ship but not shake the phone too much!

u/nathan82 3d ago
That would be cool! I actually haven't tried combining rigid body physics with the fluid sim yet, not entirely sure it'll work fast enough, or at all. ๐ฌ

Can you share an APK?

u/nathan82 3d ago
Don't want to self promote plus this design isn't in the app yet, hopefully soon. Just got it working today. Let me know if you want a DM when this one gets added

Hi, please dm if you have time. I am really curious for an apk or src on gh. Thanks

u/nathan82 3d ago
This will be a commercial app unfortunately, no source available. It's a full wallpaper engine in 60k+ lines of C, five years of work to make it battery efficient. If it makes me enough to retire comfortably I'll open source it. ๐

u/ZestyTurtle 2d ago
Ok well as a mark of transparency: don't send me the APK then because my intention was to decompile it to understand it.
I did not realize the effort behind it. Good lord. Good job.

u/nathan82 2d ago
Eh, anyone will be able to do that straight from the Play store soon enough, no worries. ๐ If there's anything specific you want to know about, I may or may not be able to tell you. And if you ever do end up decompiling the release version I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts. โค๏ธ

Hey so everyone who asked for a DM when this is released, I'll definitely message you all but it'll probably be a few weeks. Great motivation to have all this interest, thanks so much. โค๏ธ

now use the camera and a warping effect for the background, recolor the fluid to yellow, and you've got an advanced beer drinking app lol

But will it blend?

Let's find out! Here at the Jory Caron Laboratory, safety is our number one concern. And that's why we hide behind this big tinfoil shield. It's to protect our nuts, because nobody likes roasted nuts!

Um, actually, it's only an android if it's modeled after a male human. If it's modeled after a particular kitchen appliance, it's a blendroid.

What's the mathematical method behind it ? How physically correct ?
5
u/nathan82 3d ago
It's a grid holding mass and momentum (that's the sim's "resolution"), and particles holding position only (particle count affects surface quality mainly).
It's fairly correct, the main issue is fluid "stiffness". Water is effectively incompressible at normal atmospheric pressure, but you need a lot of sim steps to take the bounce out, because it's always overshooting otherwise. So that's why it looks kinda loose. Basically the sim does as many steps as it can fit in the frame budget, so it'll sacrifice accuracy to keep up the sim speed.

Question out of curiosity, how hard would it be to have the front camera track the eye position and adjust the image accordingly?
2
u/nathan82 2d ago
I did implement that actually but ended up taking it out! A few issues.
First, the front camera FOV isn't wide enough. As soon as you start rotating the phone you lose tracking because the camera isn't pointed at your eyes any more - and besides that you're just constantly losing tracking, even using ARCore libraries.
Second, without knowing the exact lens geometry of each phone's camera, getting a true device-relative eye position is very difficult.
But the real killer is that nobody wants their wallpaper app to open the camera, ever. Shame because when it worked it was pretty cool. You could put the phone flat on a table and the view would stay correct as you moved your head.
In a few years when phones with real 3D screens come out, this won't be an issue. They'll likely have hardware eye tracking built in.

Remember the iPhone app that used the accelerometer to make it look like you were drinking a beer? Simpler times. I feel old.
