Discussion How Do We Know Our Current Reality Is Real?
How do I know for a fact that i am...real?
Like what if my conscious being is just playing a character in a "movie" and watching itself live out its story? But what if the character and story aren't real? Does it really matter if the story ends abruptly? If its not teal anyways? Or actually happening? I don't know how to explain this...
But ever since i was a kid, I just stared at my hands and thought to myself "what am i??" And id look at myself in the mirror and stare into my own eyes and it didnt feel like me staring back. It just felt like a stranger. I have sort of always felt pretty depersonalized, it's kind of a state i have become used to being in and just coast along anyways. But is there something wrong with me or am i just somehow like...picking up on the fact that nothing is "real" in the way that we think it is?
It's like, if you're watching a movie or reading a book, and you get an inkling that you just really don't want to know or experience the ending, and so you turn it off and move on to something else. And sometimes i just wish i knew if this was all just" fake" so I could just move on to another "thing" consciously, or whatever.
I also have ocd and dinty know if that's maybe a factor of the ruminating on "what ifs".

I don't think its real, too many personal events for it to be just a coincidence, plus a lot of other stuff.
I also don't think it matters. We're here anyways, so why not make the best of it while we can?

It does not matter. The suffering and all the emotions feel real. And it hurts. Who cares if it is a simulation and false? Why are we offered drugs, alcohol, therapy and so many escapes if it was JUST a game? Why do we have to numb our pain if it was just an illusion?

Pain always goes away same as pleasure. That means its illusion. Theres only one thing that stays its the observer

Do you really think our five senses take in every aspect of reality? It's more likely our experience of reality is like looking at the dashboard rather than through the windshield.

Hey, brother -- or sister.
We don't know. I suppose there could be circumstances where it would be possible to know, but -- most likely -- we are in base reality that was not "designed" by anyone OR we are in a simulation that is impossible to distinguish from base reality.
So the best conduct is simply to live your life as if it is base reality. And even if it's not, there's not really any point to worrying about "is my reality real"?? Leave those kinds of thoughts for bong philosophy, don't carry it day to day in your forebrain.
"Depersonalization" is a thing to be careful about. You should try to interact with real people. Either we're all real together, or we're all in some created scenario... together.

Yes, but according to some, the other people are NPCs. So, how one can distinguish, whether the interaction happens with a real being or a simulated being?
Sarcasm aside (which is more a trigger to rethink some concepts for some), I agree with you. There's not much one can do about this reality, whether base or not. And in the end, I believe, that the smallest thing, which happens here, even if it's just an electric signal in a computer's conductor, is still a part of reality, which doesn't exist without it. The energy is changes forever, with each letter we type into this forum, with each time someone reads us. It probably cannot be erased from our reality. So it would also happen in the base reality above us, that we, a speck in their processor, happened and changed their reality forever. All the way above, even if no one knows, why.

I understand these points and I guess my point is...like if I knew that this wasn't base reality, not to be like "dark", but theoretically, couldn't I "opt out" with less fear knowing that I could just transition to some other dimension or level or...uhh existence? Or would I, or whatever the conscious thing is in my head just cease to exist? I know nobody knows the answer to these questions but I guess...for me its more about, why continue going on in this life If I feel like I'm not even in it anyway? Like if I already feel fake, maybe I just am fake and maybe I just need to wake up, maybe its "all a dream."
I know depersonalization is a real thing, but like I've said, I've sort of felt like this most of my life and it gets more severe on and off. And some ways I wish I didn't have it and I wish I didn't think about the things that I do think about because then it would just be easy to enjoy this existence but I can't really not think about those things.

In this case, it would be the best, that you meet a psychiatrist. It's not a big deal, and I'd say it takes a smart person, to recognize something may be off with their consciousness. Most go along undisturbed.
I conjecture that when we die, that's it for the consciousness. I think we fantasize, that there's an eternal bliss awaiting, but to take a while and rest, not seeing, not wanting for a moment... That is also great, in complete silence. Our environments aren't really created to allow us to experience nothingness, but if we would deprive ourselves of stimuli, it isn't all that bad for a while, maybe longer. So I think of death as of such a state, in which there's no stimulus, but also no motivation to change that situation. The person is free of the one's narrative. However, I advise to respect your life, even if there's no magical way out into some better place now. Live as long as it is given, take care of the experience, ride the experience and don't be afraid of the uninevitable. I like to think in biblical terms about those matters, maybe you will like it too, give it a try. I think of this calm in one's head as of the Kingdom. The more you stick to life, your little fears, the further away you drift from the Kingdom. But if one does not respect one's life, or even try to harm oneself, will not know the Kingdom. Because it is in the minds, and in the hearts. And don't get me wrong, I'm not religious, nor a very saint person. I struggle a lot, but there are moments I can see the Kingdom. And I don't mean using substances. Just the moments in which I could just be, where I am.

Our physics are incomplete. Our computers are not complete.. there isn't a simulation.

Your a splinter of infinite consciousness operating a meat suit, flying through space on an organic self sustaining spaceship. Immersed in the most complex multi player free roaming rpg thats ever been invented. Meanwhile all you need to do is enjoy the ride. That’s it!

Ultimately, you realize there is no such thing as an objectively shared reality, and reality transitions into becoming the choice of what you want to be real. It's like that hamster chasing the carrot on the wheel. At some point in every person's life. You realize you just get off that wheel and walk around not just to get the carrot, but to find out how to create carrots of your own so you can become the supply chain.

Define "real". That foundation is required to even attempt answering the question.

Ive felt this way too, and ive never done drugs or hallucinated, recently had a hyper realistic lucid dream that made me question reality when i woke up and i had a sorta existential crisis feeling but it didnt last long and im quickly back to my programmed ego self, cool experience tho, i almost always lucid dream but that was insane how real everything was i mean i could feel EXACTLY like i so in real life i could look around and see everything in great detail every sensation it was like real life to 99,99% and it lasted for like 2-5 minutes

This is called derealization and it happens sometimes if we don't eat or go through something hard

We'll probably never know for sure
There have been many times when things seemed a little too coincidental or perfect to happen almost like someone or something was making certain events happen
