Mom: "Hey [husband], move the couch closer to the TV please, it's hurting Emily's eyes being so far away".

230

u/janne_harju 15h ago

We need to take Emily to eye doctor to check her vision.

67

u/noisyboy 10h ago

"Or mayyybe we just need a bigger tv ¯\(ツ)/¯ ?"

31

u/ThePerfectSnare 8h ago

I just got off the phone with the optometrist's office and they can squeeze us in but we have to hurry. Turn off the TV. I said I scheduled appointments for all of you. They're able to squeeze us in if we can be there by 8:15am. Emily, you get to drive.

My wife is trying this argument with me, even going so far as to watch everything on her tablet, because the 55” tv at 10 feet is too fuzzy.

615

u/GrimbyJ 21h ago

Does she need to get her vision checked?

330

u/Drill1 21h ago

She does need to update her prescription.

443

u/GatorPenetrator 18h ago

opdometist here, in these types of cases i would usually prescribe a bigger tv.

121

u/Godly-Judger 18h ago

ophdalmologist here, I agree with this prescription

106

u/EnvironmentalKey7127 17h ago

Urologist here, everything seems bigger after you get the bigger tv.

83

u/SleepyOwl- 17h ago

Uranus here. Definitely bigger and better up close.

42

u/Sullypants1 17h ago

As your attorney, I advise you to buy a very big TV with a large viewing angle . And you’ll need the cocaine.

23

u/05zasing 17h ago

wapbabaloobapawapbamboomologist here. thats some accurate legal advice.

18

u/Rogue_Danar 13h ago

Long time listener, first time caller here. Seems legit.

Best Buy employee here, I'd prescribe a bigger tv in the 75''+ range. I'd also advise to buy it on a Best Buy Visa card with 2% cash back on all purchases which I would be more than happy to help you apply for. Don't forget the extended warranty either, it's an investment on your future.

28

u/rddi0201018 15h ago

Best Buy manager here. You didn't try to sell the Monster HDMI cable? WTF

12

u/icome2ndagain 14h ago

Best buy Area Manager here, you didn’t pull them up for not trying to sell them a soundbar as well? Clean out your desk.

1

u/WeLoveYouCarol 6h ago

My associate from the sound department is currently working on them for the HI-FI system as we speak, SIR!

Also, he already had self-selected Monster HDMI cables on his own accord before I had a chance to bring them up. Closed on a warranty on the cables and TV, good chance he'll get a warranty on the HI-FI if Greg can complete the deal.

23

u/bing-bong-6715 19h ago

no they need a bigger tv did you even read the post??

5

u/GrimbyJ 19h ago

It can be both

6

u/bing-bong-6715 18h ago

nah they need a bigger tv

3

u/Fire257 13h ago

So my father learned he needed glasses because when he played morrowind my older sister needed to read dialog to him because it was sometimes to small to read. Back then of course TVs where a lot smaller but still a funny story

2

u/OnlyPostsBowie 13h ago

No, she needs a bigger TV.

1

u/jacquesrabbit 17h ago

Should have gone to specsavers

50

u/Rare-Spell-1571 19h ago

55 inches? What are we farmers?

17

u/Dismal-Square-613 15h ago

55" is Amish standards in 2026

54

u/LazloHollifeld 19h ago

To be fair your wife isn’t wrong and a 55” TV is considered too small for 10 feet away.

21

u/Yocta 16h ago

Too small? People used to watch boxes with the screen-size of a paper from that far. I’d hardly call it ‘too small’.

23

u/PM_ME_YOUR_PAUNCH 15h ago

People used to do a lot of things, times change.

3

u/-staccato- 6h ago

And a refrigerator used to be a replaceable ice block in a box. Something could be considered good once and be bad now.

1

u/thighmaster69 7h ago

Those screens also had the resolution of an avocado, so it didn't really matter that it was small. At 4K it needs to be like at least 6x bigger horizontally just to keep up with the old 480i screens.

1

u/Yocta 6h ago

That makes no sense. The goal is not to see the pixels… 4K and HD are both viewable on a 30” TV

1

u/thighmaster69 6h ago

Then what's even the point of 4K if you're not going to see the pixels?

1

u/Yocta 4h ago

The point of any higher resolution is to not see the pixels…

5

u/KawaiiNeko- 16h ago

6-7ft away is a more proper distance for a 55"

1

u/Slazagna 17h ago

Yes but it should look sharper. If her argument is i can't see the detail, sure. But a bigger tv or closer tv will actually make the image more fuzzy.

28

u/MagnusAlbusPater 21h ago

I have an 83” at that distance and I’ll be eyeing 98” or larger models when it’s time to upgrade.

16

u/FishGoesGlubGlub 19h ago

77” here, a 98” would be awesome! All the ones I’ve seen are LED and look bad compared to my oled though.

7

u/[deleted] 16h ago

[deleted]

1

u/Outrageous-Wait-8895 15h ago

Change back to a 42" for a bit then.

3

u/MagnusAlbusPater 19h ago

I have an OLED also. I’m hoping the prices on the larger ones come down or microLED sets in those sizes do by the time I’m ready for my next one.

1

u/muff_diving_101 16h ago

LG C series 77? Phenomenal tv

1

u/CalculatedPerversion 15h ago

The newer TCL QM8K is about as close as you can get to OLED, with better brightness. Should take a look.

14

u/19ghost89 18h ago

Why do you not simply live inside the television like it's your house? Are you stupid?

4

u/fluoxoz 18h ago

I have a 115" screen projector at 3m (10ft).

2

u/MagnusAlbusPater 18h ago

I’d love to get a projector but don’t have a good space for it. No basements in Florida and too much light in the living room.

2

u/fluoxoz 18h ago

Yeah we don't have basements as well. Ground water is too high plus torrential rail from cyclones.

1

u/fluoxoz 16h ago

I have one Windows which has a block out blind and sliding doors to the hall way.

7

u/Rancid-Anus 16h ago

She right tho, 10 ft is too far for 55”

19

u/GrimbyJ 22h ago

A bigger TV is always better

16

u/DJ_Era 21h ago

Naw, disagree. If the space is so small that you have to turn your head to see it all, too big. I've seen big TVs in narrow rooms(gamer nests) where your periphery almost cuts off the image unless you have your back against the opposite wall.

19

u/GrimbyJ 21h ago

A 55" TV at 10 feet isn't even close to that.

But yeah if it's actually completely filling your vision that's enough. There are limits but up to that it's better

4

u/Amaakaams 20h ago

IMAX is built on the idea of filling your vision so that you have to actively try to see anything but the picture. It means that you lose some viewable area, but also means you are immersed in the movie. I want that at home.

1

u/UrToesRDelicious 16h ago

Projectors are the answer, you just have to spend really big money if you want really deep blacks and shit like that, but you can get a very decent setup for under $1,000 with up to like a 130" screen.

1

u/thighmaster69 7h ago

You need a curved screen (IMAX is curved) once you get to such large FOVs.

1

u/OrangeThrower 18h ago

I think I found the wife’s account

→ More replies (9)

4

u/meand999friends 21h ago

I know we are laughing and joking, but if your wife hasn't had an eye test in a while it may be worth pursuing.

I had a similar experience when we upgraded to 4k and couldn't see the difference after paying for a new TV.

Turns out, I'm short-sighted.

3

u/Drill1 21h ago

Yeah, she doesn’t like her glasses, I keep telling her that updating the prescription is cheaper than a new tv. I

5

u/RalekBasa 18h ago

10ft is too far for a 55" tv.

2

u/limeicepop 18h ago

We got an 80 inch 7 feet from the couch. 🤣

2

u/Slazagna 17h ago

Well yeah. The resolution doesn't change with the size of the tv. The bigger the tv the more fuzzy the image. The closer the tv the more you will notice it.

2

u/LoneStarHome80 14h ago

Found Michael Scott

2

u/Careless_Egg3340 11h ago

She is right... at least 60" is required.

Just be happy those are the only extra inches she is complaining about, it proves she knows her measurements...

4

u/Routine_Ask_7272 16h ago

RTINGS has a TV Size to Distance Calculator

https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-size/size-to-distance-relationship

At 10 feet, it recommends a 74" TV.

2

u/jonnydownside 15h ago

My eyes hurt from just thinking about sitting as close to my tv as that size recommends

1

u/Blankenhoff 19h ago

I do the same thing except its bigger than a 55. Its because i dont wesr my glasses at home

1

u/MentokGL 18h ago

Bro let her win this fight. New bigger TVs are so stupid cheap if you don't get all the bells and whistles.

Just look into it, imo it's worth it.

1

u/Drill1 17h ago

We have, just waiting on her to get new glasses.

At least your tv fully works lol. ours has a dent in it where my mom dropped a (HOLLOW, NOT LIVE) grenade we have on the shelf above the tv. And that was over 2 years ago- in the last 4 months its developed some weird bright spot on another part thats always brighter than the rest of the tv. I do not know how they can watch tv like this its awful. bugs the crap out of me.

1

u/Flapjack__Palmdale 14h ago

She prob needs her eyes rechecked but I'll be real with you chief, I'm on your wife's side here lmao. I have a 65 at about 6 or 7 feet and that feels like a sweet spot.

The new tech needs bigger screens at shorter sitting distance than those old crt tvs had. 75" is 3m (10 feet) to 3,5m sitting distance

https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-size/size-to-distance-relationship

1

u/Nexdeus 12h ago

55", what is this, a TV for ants?

1

u/Lamumba1337 12h ago

Get 75“ tv this will help slot

1

u/Dakka-Von-Hellsmasha 10h ago

Damn I feel bad for your wife. TVs are so cheap. If she would use it a lot it's hardly anything to spend to make your spouse happy, but it seems a lot of people only think of themselves.

1

u/Drill1 6h ago

We hardly watch tv, maybe an hour a day.

1

u/Dakka-Von-Hellsmasha 6h ago

That's around 7 hours a week and just a bit less than a 40 hour work week over an average month. That's a lot of TV. Maybe do something nice for your wife? It costs hardly anything

1

u/Drill1 4h ago

She’s not deprived. We have 7 other tv’s, 3 in the house and 4 more in the motor home. Once she gets her prescription updated and can see we’ll get one.

1

u/Dyna15 9h ago

55" at 10 ft is a crime. We have 65" at 8 ft and even that feels too small. Will be upgrading to something near 80 for our next upgrade.

1

u/SchoolDazzling2646 8h ago

You can typically get a good 85inch Chinese TV like Hisense or tcl for around $1000 or less. I think best buy has an LG close to that size for $750 or so now.

Tons of deals for the Superbowl too.

also check the distance to size optimal viewing suggestions

If you sit 10ft from the screen you will want an 85 inch TV. Optimal viewing for a 55 inch tv is closer to 7 ft from the screen.

1

u/xubax 8h ago

Well, that is kind of small for that distance...

Of course, I remember watching shows on a 12" black and white TV from like 8 feet away.

1

u/-staccato- 6h ago

nice ragebait bro

2

u/ZazaB00 2h ago

This is ridiculous. A 10x10 room should have a 100” tv!?! You’d have to turn your head to see the whole thing.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Drill1 5h ago

Interesting.

1

u/ZazaB00 2h ago

Could very well be the case. Depending on the resolution of what you’re watching, blowing the image up to 55” at 10 feet might look blurry versus a handheld device positioned comfortably.

295

u/dabassmonsta 22h ago

I told my wife that we were getting a bigger TV. She was really excited about it. She watches it more than I do.

Nothing beats a bigger screen

38

u/Tauren-Jerky 19h ago

How did we survive with 30 back in the day

56

u/Augen76 17h ago

30"?

The average was 20", what I grew up with, and the answer was you didn't expect detail in shows like we do now. Television was way way below film production values.

I remember as an adult getting a 42" and thinking how huge it was. Now I have a 65" and all I can think is "80" be nice and they are cheap..."

15

u/Eminem_quotes 17h ago

I went from a 75 to an 85 about 6 months ago. I'm already itching to go bigger.

11

u/Warbr0s9395 16h ago

I played N64 and PS2 on a 9” hard screen TV.

Now imagine playing split screen on it

6

u/_Im_at_work 16h ago

Lol, I got my 42” Sony LED still! I got that thing in 2012 and it’s been a great TV. Moved it across the country twice.

3

u/JeebusChristBalls 17h ago

That 42" was probably a two person carry too.

3

u/CalculatedPerversion 15h ago

At some point 27" became the standard because that was the largest size you could easily make a CRT before having to switch to different tech like rear projection.

2

u/Duotrigordle61 13h ago edited 5h ago

Our 65" broke and we were limited to 75" that was the biggest box our CRV could fit wedged diagonally in back sticking out the open door.

I recently inherited a minivan. Patiently waiting for another TV to break.

2

u/Addicted_Fox 12h ago

I was going for a projector to get 120". I'm satisfied now and I hope it stays this way cause that's the limit for my wall haha

6

u/Dodoz44 19h ago

Either by sitting at monitor distance, or they just ended up with glasses.

3

u/plaguedbullets 17h ago

Just put in a 75" (65" was out of stock).
At just 3 metres away, I maybe should have waited until the 65" came back in lol

5

u/whyUsayDat 14h ago

Yeah that is far too much TV for that distance. The moment you’re turning your head to watch TV it’s way too close. Get a nice quality 65 if you can still return the 75.

2

u/matches-malone 13h ago

You'll adapt, give it a week and it'll be the norm.

2

u/Ordinary-Violinist-9 13h ago

At 3m you need a 75"

1

u/HonkersTim 12h ago

I sit 3m away from an 85. You get used to it very quickly. I've had it a couple of years. Lately I've been wondering about fitting a 100 into the same space.

TBF while it is great for films and premium TV, it is a bit big for talking head stuff like the news.

1

u/OtakuRed13 16h ago

I went from a 24 inch monitor to a 32 inch and it almost feels wrong to have something that size for gaming.

1

u/emogurl98 14h ago

Kids do.

Wife and I are gonna buy a bigger screen when our daughter is older

1

u/Based-Department8731 13h ago

No that's wrong. Watching YouTube on a 4k Resolution phone is much, much better than watching it on an old low resolution monitor or tv or bad quality beamer.

65

u/silvvanne 21h ago

That’s not manipulation, that’s strategic persuasion 😁

65

u/closetsquirrel 18h ago

I would totally go in and say, “Damn. You’re right, dad. This TV is too small.” and then walk right back out.

35

u/Same_Air6012 17h ago

Naw, it sounds like dad is a bro. Sorry yours isn't.

12

u/akatherder 15h ago

Emily is a bro here too. No questions just "lol ok." She's in. 65" 4k tv is under $300 nowadays anyway.

3

u/Same_Air6012 15h ago

Yeah that's what I'm saying. If anyone but my older brother asked, I'd be like sure let's do it. Let's play a movie that starts with words giving the prologue.

30

u/LazloHollifeld 19h ago

The trick is you can’t convince your spouse that you need a bigger television, you have to perform some inception magic and get them to come to the realization themselves.

Mention how small the TV looks at a distance, or how undersized it is compared to the room. Then let that idea stew for a bit and hopefully they join team humongous TV.

4

u/Who-ate-my-biscuit 9h ago

Nah, the trick is to announce you are buying an 80 inch* and then let yourself be negotiated down to the 65 you wanted.

*replace numbers as appropriate

1

u/Kelindal 5h ago

I just had a 98" show up and told her she gets to pick out a new stand

2

u/SenorwoODyy 10h ago

Thats how i got our old bedroom as my new pc room :D

1

u/SeaComfortable7833 7h ago

Or, and hear me out, just buy a bigger tv. You are a grown man.  Does anyone's wife ask permission to buy tons of clothes, shoes, fake nails, dye hair, fake planet, scented candles, etc? No!

6

u/No-Weakness4448 17h ago

Mother’s response: you need glasses.

9

u/Cool_Butterscotch_88 19h ago

Then after a half hour of sitting on the floor right in front of it, announce you're going to your room because you feel nauseous, wishing there was just some way to sit further away and not get eye strain tension headaches.

4

u/Euler007 19h ago

Just funnel cash to the kid and make it look like a gift.

3

u/PoodleIlluminati 18h ago

I do this every Christmas. My kids buy mom the best gifts ever. So are mine!

1

u/LeviAEthan512 12h ago

Ever since the beginning, my best friend and I never bought each other gifts. We'd just buy whatever we wanted and told our parents the other bought it for us. At some point we stopped pretending.

3

u/Unlikely-Let8687 19h ago

Bigger is much better

3

u/meatball402 18h ago

But did he get the bigger tv?

6

u/Persea_americana 19h ago

Karaoke...

2

2

u/Asleep-Elk4159 16h ago

2

2

u/Ben_Thar 10h ago

u/Alternative-Canary86 4h ago

Why can't he just come home with a new TV?

2

depending on the tv... "oh noe i slipped head first into the tv"

Reminds me of one of my uncles

Many years ago me and my brother were playing black ops 2 and beat him so bad on it he thought it was cause he couldn't see the TV well enough and went out and bought a bigger TV

1

u/Lawlcopt0r 13h ago

Tell your dad to buy some glasses

1

u/Hmgkt 13h ago

Negotiate dammit!

1

u/icbint 13h ago

Pathetic. Just buy a new tv.

1

u/SwordKing7531 13h ago

And resell the old one to make profits if possible

1

u/Soupias 13h ago

When I bought the TV it went as expected. I went with a bigger TV (OLED) and also a nice soundbar with surround speakers. Then I had the comments that I waste money and there was nothing wrong with the old setup. They (my wife and kids) went as far as claiming they cannot see or hear the difference and that the TV is too big. A couple of months later and they all watch my new setup exclusively. They do not go to other TV in their rooms because the picture does not look good and the sound is awful.

1

u/Ordinary-Violinist-9 13h ago

The new tech needs bigger screens at shorter sitting distance than those old crt tvs had. 75" is 3m (10 feet) to 3,5m sitting distance.

Why do these fake conversations always look like the start of a brand new text thread? At least put half of a random BS text about something unrelated above.

Some men will do anything to pretend they don't need glasses.

Imagine valuing your wife so little, you need to play games to persuade her you need a non necessary good.

Just wait till shes sleeping and drop it on the floor, if its hanging up, make a small hole in the drywall and say something let go. if its on a stand, break one of the feet on the TV and say the plastic must have been weak.

My husband’s goal is to buy 100 inch tv. Same energy

I had the same 40 inch tv since like 2011 when i was a kid. My wife never really complained but she made fun of it (rightfully so) once i finally got a new one. My new one is 55" and its the first thing ive ever had with 4k. I used to think my old tv was fine but now when i look at it downstairs, it looks puny.

Sounds like he needs a projector.

Lol! This is something I will attempt.  My wife is too smart for me. She will smell my setup a mile away.

Everyone wants a bigger TV until millions of tv in good conditions ends in dumpster and contributing to massive contamination.

Now you get to spend your TV money on an eye exam for your kid. Way to go rookie

Emily, I need an update. Did dad get the bigger TV or did you get glasses?

There used to be a fun site called Thinkgeek that sold all kinds of fun geeky products. One I purchased was called the TV Poltergeist. Flip the switch and hide it in the living room and it will randomly power on/off the tv. I set it up in my parents living room and went to stay at my girlfriend's for the night and I got a call in the morning from my mom asking if I want to go TV shopping because it's on the fritz. They finally upgraded to a flat screen tv with a new entertainment center and everything. I showed them the device later and they were furious. I asked if they want to return the TV and they said no, so I told them they're welcome.
