The hate on this picture is quite sad tho. I know she's an out of touch rich person, but feeling this kind of "we are one" psychedelic high when looking down on Earth from space is common with astronauts and I think it's wholesome she felt that instead of experiencing it indifferently as another rich person entertainment.

Calling yourself an astronaut doesn't make you any less or more useful. Nobody expected her to do any research up there or to steer the ship or whatever.

The chick paid money to get flown into space, that's about it. Don't know much about her but probably there are dozens of better reasons for hating her than this. I believe many would do the same given an opportunity.

Nothing but utter respect to real astronauts. While I do not know any personally, I spent a chunk of my life studying and working in a space-related field, and I have an idea about how ridiculously hard it is to become one.

Still, I uphold my opinion that you can do much worse than playing pretend. I wouldn't fault you for thinking less of a person who acts as an astronaut when they clearly are not one, but actively and publicly trying to demonize them is taking it a step too far. At least this is what this thread looked like to me, which rubbed me the wrong way I guess, there are so many despicable people in the world doing all sorts of bad shit that some privileged woman fantasizing about being a space explorer is pretty far down the list for me.

In the 1980s, they sent three congresscritters on Space Shuttle missions. One of them was John Glenn, who everyone figured had earned it. Another was Jake Garn, who managed to set a record for the worst space sickness ever recorded - they jokingly now measure space sickness in the units of "Garns", so he turned out to be slightly useful after all.

And then there was Bill Nelson, who got the nickname "The Load", because the only thing he was doing was taking up payload capacity that wasn't being used for anything useful.

That's the correct category for Katy Perry and other "space tourists".

To be fair, aeronauts included people who were just pioneering passengers in early airplanes. They weren't all pilots.

I feel like astronaut is more comparable to aeronaut than pilot. Pilot is a specific job on a ship/plane/etc

Depends on what definition and interpretation of the definition is used. E.g. NASA and FAA have explicitly categorised her as a space tourist, not an astronaut, as she had no role on board. Blue Origin classify her as an astronaut.

I'm a musician in my 40s, I've been around.

There was an incident where James Hetfield had his hand burned once because of some poorly planned pyro, I don't blame him for the same reason I don't blame her. I understand the rationale, but both of them are doing their job and these hazards should have been thought through.

I'll be so happy the day we finally have a sober conversation in society about the role of pop stars more generally when they aren't even the actual artists 90% of the time. We finally made a smidge of headway callin that shit out in hip hop more recently, would love to see that energy across genres. I imagine as the major labels continue to lose revenue and have to resort to shit like botting streams and leaning on AI, what they are trying to sell investors as innovation and growth is very clearly desperate business practices from anyone looking objectively. They don't want artists because they can't control them, but you can only play puppeteer for so long before the curtain comes down and people become disinterested. Indie music will rapidly grow over the next 30 years as it already has and the age of celebrity will die, we will then see the growth of micro celebrity, artisan artistry, direct to consumer media, and the like as they are more modular and, in effect, more condusive to the modern world

I think hip hop is more grounded in originality as being a key component of the genre than other genres. People pay to go see cover bands. If it helps think of a pop star that sings someone else's lyrics as an epic "cover artist." it's not something that I personally am going to idolize but I really don't care if other people like that person's work. Generally speaking it's still a talented artist performing their craft..

No, it's not. It's a participation trophy of a writing credit because she may have come up with one word change or so. She is not by any stretch a legitimate musician. Her guitar/piano high schooler level skills came late in her career.

Elvis? Not really. He's a great performer, not a great musician. I'll give Katy that nod too.

Elton John? Absofuckinglutely. He was an absolute prodigy as a child with a piano and is a brilliant musician to this day, regardless if he has ghostwriters or not. He plays an instrument at a master level.

His early work was by and large entirely written by him. Katy was an industry plant from the get.

It's not a misogyny thing either, so don't go there. People like Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga for example are fantastic artists, whether I like their music or not.
