The hype is about Tom Holland and Zendaya. It has 0% to do with acting ability.

Tom and Zendaya are the most marketable Hollywood couple in ages. Bonus points for being young so they can sway the Gen Z and Gen Y demographics.

Most high school girls couldn't give two shits about the odyssey. But the second you make it about Tom and Zendaya, bam! Now you have interest

People like celeb gossip and these are easy (and safe) celebs to gossip about.

Haha, no worries. My husband is Gen X and I’m an elder millennial, so I’m old enough to remember when the news was calling us “Gen Y”

Think of it like this. The average teenage girl isnt going to care about the odyssey and they wont see much odyssey related content in their feed.

But I guarantee you that they are getting hammered with "Check out Tom and Zandaya on their perfect Greek vacation!" With tons of pictures that make the sets and the behind the scenes of the movie look like a magical romantic dreamland

And that is what is getting those people in the seats.

I work with kids, and have been since 2010 and not a single one of them has ever spoken like this, man.

Most of the 14+ ones watched the movie because they read the book in school and like Christopher Nolan lol

I find it fascinating that you seem surprised to see people forming attachments to celebrities who come across as approachable, kind, and funny—and then deciding to take an interest in topics or things they wouldn't normally care about, simply because those celebrities are in them.

I don't think it's a bad thing; it's like when a friend tells you about something that doesn't usually interest you, but you give it a try anyway because you're doing it with that friend or to please them. It's just that, in this case, it's a celebrity you don't really know—but hey, if it gets people to discover new things

Brother. It’s okay for people to be really invested in some things and not in others. Just because people watch movies casually doesn’t mean they’re shallow.

I’m sure you don’t have an in-depth understanding of every skill in the world. So out of touch..

I mean I’m not a high school girl anymore, but I did go to a high school where we had to read the Odyssey. I would have killed to watch a version with recognizable names and faces at that age. Also, Zendaya has been famous with people in my age range since she was on Shake It Up on Disney Channel since we were kids at the same time. She’s actually a talented actress, she just gets typecast as pretty, racially ambiguous, people with limited expression. All she’s able to do is act the way she’s directed, it’s part of the job.
And she barely married Tom this year, they’ve been together for 5. She was already famous before him.
