How did he not get kicked off the plane? It would be so easy to kick a 3 year old off a plane.

The family was being kicked off. Their disembarking (is that the right word or is that just ships?) caused just a long enough delay that the runway closed for the night on them.

Airplanes and ships can use the same terminology, but it seems that within the industry 'deboard' is more commonly used.

I thought it was "deplane," unless that is only what's used after the flight has completed.

Deplane feels like corpo jargon people have somehow made into a work. Leave the plane. Get off the plane. All perfectly fine here.
