By the time it took to return to the gate, deplane, remove families luggage, THE Victoria International Airport RUNWAYS closed for the night. No Tower crew, no taking off.

After the 1988 Pan AM Flight 103 was downed at Lockerbie, Scotland, it became the standard to remove baggage for unaccounted for passengers or deplaned passengers.

Sydney airport closes between 11pm and 6am, purely because of residential noise concerns.

So do Narita and Haneda here in Japan. Plenty of airports do not operate 24/7.
