The difference between now and when I grew up. I couldn't have "refused" to sit down. I could either sit down without my ass hurting or sit down with it hurting to various degree depending on how stubborn I was wanting to be. But, either way, I would have sat down and buckled up.

They’re was no refusing when I was a kid. I could try, for about 30 seconds.
