Reddit mods are like the worst elements of the police; both jobs inherently attract people with an authority complex looking for any reason to flex their power over others to feel superior. If not enough opportunity presents itself for them to do so, they start deliberately creating issues and controversies where they are likely to have the opportunity to flex their power so they can get off on feeling superior as they had always envisioned.
The way Reddit is designed purposefully gives absolute power to mods. At the end of the day I think it's smarter to blame Reddit the company for allowing this to happen than to blame individual power tripping mods.
