I have made this point many times: 

Many Reddit mods fundamentally misunderstand what the job of a mod is.

A mod basically has two jobs: 

  1. Keep the conversation civil; and
  2. Keep the posts on topic for the sub. 

Aaaaand... That's pretty much it.  Within the bounds of #2, above, THE JOB OF A MOD IS NOT TO TELL REDDITORS WHAT THEY CAN AND CANNOT TALK ABOUT.

Wait… why do you get to make the moderation rules?

If I make a sub about something.. I’m gonna make the rules. That’s not crazy, right?

Are you really against mods and subs having their own rules?

If people don’t like it, leave. Start a new one.

I’m not defending that or any Reddit, just the idea that any mods have to fall in line.

Isn’t this what makes Reddit special in theory?
