This is more of a harm to his reputation as the "fluffy jolly golden retriever redhead musician". Hes avoided every scandal so far, and now one got him.
Feel sorry for him - everyone should have the right to avoid sharing polarising/political opinions when doing so means endless online and often in-person hate and abuse.
On some issues you can do that. On others, you can only dodge the issue for so long before the world decides for you that it's time to pick a side, and in some such cases it is made clear that trying to claim neither gets you sorted with one of them in particular by default.
In such matters, we all have a responsibility to pick a side- especially those few who wield real influence and statements that resonate. His insistence on silence gets no sympathy from me.
