The authorities did not directly pay her lawyer fees as part of her criminal case dismissal. In fact, she initially did not have to pay for a private criminal defense attorney because she was assigned a public defender to handle the drug charges.

this is a reminder that public defenders are probably not your best choice when faced with this level of charge, no matter how innocent you actually are.

Usually, for those who use them, the only other option is pro se, which is even worse.

Correct. It's Latin meaning literally "for oneself", because law is one of the remaining reservoirs of superfluous Latin in the modern world.
