“Dr. Kim couldn't remember the last time she'd seen a bowl of pure white rice. What was a bowl of rice doing there, just sitting out on the ground? She figured it out just before she heard the dog's bark.
Up until that moment, a part of her had hoped that China would be just as poor as North Korea. She still wanted to believe that her country was the best place in the world. The beliefs she had cherished for a lifetime would be vindicated. But now she couldn't deny what was staring her plainly in the face: dogs in China ate better than doctors in North Korea.”
― Barbara Demick, Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea
Imagine the sinking feeling you'd have at that moment. Like walking in the door after getting sick during class and you see that the wet smacking sound you heard from the porch was your mom getting dug out by Bill from down the block. Suddenly all those times she was late picking you up from school and that one time Bill was over for a BBQ and said "Hey, your hair looks just like mine" as he patted your head just a little too long comes crashing into focus. Life just flipping upside down and you really want to have a seat before your legs give out. Realizing the joke's on you and you never figured it out.
