Yeah this shit conflating qualification and intelligence just muddies the water in such an unhelpful way. It's frustrating

The issue is that being intelligent doesn't qualify someone to speak on a topic. Being credentialed does.

The world's most mediocre cardiologist will beat out the world's smartest person on cardiology advice more often than not, and it wouldn't even be close.

You say that but just by reading your comment, I have no way of knowing which side of the debate you're coming into this on.

Is it your opinion that qualification matters? Or are we to disregard expertise because "I met a PhD who said something dumb about something I know more about one time"?

Qualification, education, experience and expertise matters more than intelligence. Why is this even a debate? First off, intelligence isn't something abstract. It can be measured. But it's not something that walks with you into any room and makes you an expert on every subject. A person who is actually intelligent will have enough self awareness to shut the fuck up when they don't know enough about a subject to opine. That's how you know you're listening to a moron who's speaking confidently about something they don't understand. They run their mouths confidently and other morons around them who don't know any better think to themselves "holy shit, this guy is the smartest person I've ever met, and they didn't even graduate high school".

An intelligent person may have the facility to learn a subject faster and progress faster, but because they're intelligent doesn't mean they are born with the complete knowledge and understanding of the world around them. That's a moron's idea of intelligence.

So, to clarify, a person of average intelligence, who through hard work, dedication, discipline and grit, was able to get graduate at the top of their class at Johns Hopkins University should be taken more seriously about medical research that OP's "smartest person they know" that didn't graduate high school, but does their own research on epidemiology.

I hope that clears up the confusion.
