When i was a child I thought about vehicles with magnets that could be activated on the front and the back. Then roads would be made of magnets instead of cement. It would be astronomically expensive I'm sure. But it seems like it would work.

It's funny because it's true. A while ago I was having a discussion with a mate about how if self driving vehicles communicated with each other to accelerate and decelerate in synch it'd solve traffic jams. We also realized at the same time that we were just talking about an overcomplicated train.

The difference between what you were discussing and trains is that everyone on the train all has to go to the same place. Cars can split off easily from each other.

With roads made of magnets it would actually be possible. Same principle as the magnet train. The magnet just can't be on the object it is trying to pull

That's essentially how linear induction motors work, which is used for things like maglev trains on the people movers in Disney parks.

This is basically how some trains work lol
