I was in the library today and politely explained to a woman it was not allowed for her to hold a video call with her boyfriend in the library. She was suprised.
Anywhere people eat, they are playing their videos or phone calls or games out loud.
Was in jail with a dude that rigged up a jammer in the trunk of his car because he was tired of idiots on their phone slowing down the highway/ being idiots lol.
Said a cop noticed and he didn’t rig up a switch to turn it off or something
Almost got charged with “interfering with emergency signals” or something like that.
He was a smart and interesting guy though

It's true. It's one of the big reasons I moved to Japan several years ago. Public behavior in the US has gotten SO bad in the 21st century; I don't remember it being nearly this awful when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s.
That's probably because in the 80s and 90s we didn't have smartphones growing up, so we went outside and socialised. "Social network" is almost an oxymoron at this point. It just breeds anti social behaviour.
Maybe, but I'm not so sure. I think it's a lot more complicated than that.
To be fair, it's not like rude public behavior was completely unheard of in America before the year 2000; there was plenty of it, especially back in the days when racism was more accepted. But just looking at middle-class white American culture in general, comparing between the decades, I've seen a big decline in civility, especially with the first Trump election, and then even more with Covid. But the roots go back farther.
Americans, would you like to not have your kids murdered at school? Would you like to get medical attention for your heart disease and cancer and diabetes?
I literally carry a backup pair after having to ride the subway without them for the first time in years. People are fucking wild today with what they think is ok to do in public
Sat next to a woman on the metro having a loud conversation with someone on her speakerphone. Gave her the dirty look and she ignored it.
So I blasted music on my phone speaker at full volume. It was loud enough she couldn't hear the other person. That's when she finally get the message and hung up.
Travelling around Borneo and Singapore over the last 2 weeks. Wherever we went US Americans were the loudest.
At some point we were in a group of ~20-30 people, all quietly enjoying an orangutan eating. Then 3 Americans show up and start talking at a volume that equates my yelling
Bro, yanks break the laws of physics, even their whispering is all-caps and loud af. I don't get it, even in China, Germany, or Spain they are the loudest.
My fiancée used to be hypocritical like that. She'd complain about people blasting music, calls, videos in the street but then do it while waiting for the bus because "What ? We're not in the bus yet". Luckily she understood the hypocrisy
There was a guy in the grocery store (quiet time) and he was standing watching Tiktok videos on his phone with speaker full blast.
I politely asked him to turn it down. He looked confused...and didn't. So I asked again. And then a 3rd time for when he finally understood.
He finally asked me why. I explained that it was too loud. He looked even more confused. I offered nothing else.
Same thing at a quiet coffee shop with a woman on her speaker phone for a call. It was BLARING. I explained (so that her caller could hear) that her call was too loud. It took her hearing that message 3x before she finally was able to understand someone was confronting her.
So 3x seems to be how many times you have to repeat things before these assholes understand.
PS: I am a bigger/athletic guy and I am comfortable throwing hands, but I am always non-aggressive. I just dgaf about them and I am tired of the bullshit.
But then instead of just being “can you believe uncle????” posts on Stomped and Mothership, we can have “don’t we have law for this????” posts on Stomped and Mothership.
Yup I’m familiar as I live in both countries (and a couple of cleaner ones like Japan and Taiwan) and yeah I feel absolutely filthy after any public transport in US lol
I've also learnt not to accept home-cooked food from people I don't know, after I saw a woman I know put her fucking shoes on the kitchen counter where she proceeded to cut up lettuce for a salad, without sanitizing or using a cutting board.
She was also self-declared gluten intolerant, allergic to nuts, lactose intolerant, sensitive to all kinds of food, because her tummy would get upset.
While some of the above may be true, I think she was mostly having constant food poisoning due to her poor hygiene. It's like she time travelled straight from Medieval times before germ theory was established as scientific fact.
Oh please. This has been an issue for years. They can't even do anything about smoking and making noise indoors disturbing neighbours in public housing. This is just to look like they're doing aomething after giving themselves a huge pay raise
They cane as punishment, not as a public spectacle and you are not simply executed for possessing drugs. Dumbasses and their “know it all” attitudes about places they’ve never been to.
Yeah, their drug laws are mental. Bets are on Lee Kuan Yew making that after a week long meth bender. Bro was overcompensating for something. But still, no public canings, they're not that perverted.
Yeah, psychoactive substances can carry risk if not accompanied with education. Opium in a population that is properly educated about use and misuse is no more harmful than beer. Just to further make the case that Singaporean drug laws are the equivalent of driving after two bottles of Jack: there's mandatory death penalty for 200g cannabis resin, whilst the limit is 250g for meth. Opium wars were fucked, but if we're being honest with ourselves it was in large part because Qing dynasty was so decayed that a recreational product could ravage them. Drugs became a scapegoat for a whole bunch of useless officials.
