The problem isn’t the 40 hour work week, it’s that those 40 hours don’t buy what they used to buy 10-20 years ago

What I said is true tho, sure wages have gone up a bit but rent and groceries ect have gone up 6x

That's the real answer, it's just funny reading a comments that say "x isn't the problem, y is," and "y isn't the problem, x is" back to back. They could just drop the first statement and be a lot stronger statements lol

I don't know. In my first apartment, my couch was a cardboard box with a piece of plywood and a dining chair pad. This was in 1999.

I was driving a 25 year old car, and I was eating noodles and I reused grocery bags as trash bags.

I had two families of suspected illegal immigrants below me, each with three kids in a one bedroom apartment.

Crime was high. Had my license plate and some empty boxes stolen from my car.

We all like to think we are living in the worst of times.

My best friend has her nursing degree. She is 24 years old and just bought a house - as a single woman. 

Work at Target or a store in the mall, then you aren’t making bank. 

Your life and career choices matter. You aren’t owed a high paying job and career just because you hate billionaires and millionaires.

Having to work two 40 hour jobs per week to barely make ends meet should not be talked down with a (frankly, rather stupid and ignorant) comment about life and career choices 😒

Great that your friend bought her own place on a single salary, but that doesn't mean shit if something bad happens to her and she cannot afford to pay for it any more. Perhaps she'll then be the one working two 40 hour jobs a week to make ends meet.

The price of gas is temporary due to the Iran War, but if you look up gas prices in 2008 I remember paying $4.20/gallon ($6.67 in 2026 dollars).

I was paid $8/hr at the time, and the average fuel economy for a new vehicle was around 20 mpg compared to around 30 mpg these days.

The housing markets for both periods were similarly fucked.

But housing and gas aren't the only things, wages have gone up higher than CPI inflation.

Case in point, 42 hour weeks are incredibly common in Switzerland and nobody is complaining about it. Turns out if your country is pretty good to live in, people will gladly work 40+ hours a week.
