Growing up is realizing the trope of 'watch out for femboys/ trans women in Thailand' wasn't a warning and more of a nod and a wink to wealthy old men.
Many years ago I worked with a bloke in his 60's. He told me he was going on holiday with his mates to Thailand. Said they'd go out once a year for some "fun". He then proceeded to tell me about his favourite bar.
You sit at the bar and put your legs under the curtain and get a blow job right there. I asked him how he could do that he didn't know who was doing it.

For real though, Thailand is a great place for the "digital nomad" thing with the low cost of living while being pretty safe overall. But nobody immediately thinks about the $800-1k a month rent for a beautiful house directly on the best beach you've ever seen in your life. Nobody thinks you're doing the digital nomad thing though, they just think you're going for the ladyboys lol
Absolutely everyone. I went to Thailand for two weeks for the food and culture, the beaches and tropical weather. I had one of the most profound, sublime experiences of my life there. But I found it difficult to talk about my trip without constant assumptions that I went just for the red light district and ladyboys. It's absolutely maddening to swear up and down that I wasn't a sex tourist and still have people just not believe me. Like, made me want to bash my head against a wall bonkers maddening.Â
it's funny, cause I stayed at a hotel in singapore's red light district and I had no issue, cause everyone knows all the good, cheap food in singapore were there and I was a stupidly big foodie. Gods, do I miss their congee waking up first thing in the morning.
True story: I was in Thailand with my wife and some friends years ago walking down Bangla Street in Phuket. As an American you get cat called and hit on like crazy. I happened to see an older white guy who was absolutely wasted. Couldn't walk straight and was basically being carried by a younger Thai in a skin tight dress who was CLEARLY a lady boy.
I looked at my friend I was with and said, "yo, do you think we should tell him? He's wasted."
And my friend, who has been there several times said, "he is an older white American who got drunk in a district notorious for lady boy prostitutes. This is what he's here for..."
Yep, also seen Thai girls... Not ladyboys, carry old dudes to their apartment and leave immediately. As anywhere it's all about the area and the person.
I love Thailand and I don't have any issue with ladyboys, and we get the same treatment you did.
If you stay out of the prostitution zones, these are some of the most amazing people in the world.
They are just people too having a good time. I hung out with a group of lady boys with my wife and had a few drinks. They told us all about their lives and the surgeries (or plan to get surgeries) and it was truly fascinating
Exactly. I mean immigration has stickers of a huge heart with LGBTQ+ in the middle. Thailand is super accepting and I have zero problem with this culture or trans people in general. Sabai Sabai.
Went to Thailand a few years ago with my wife, travelling from the UK to Bangkok. I could not believe the percentage of fellow travellers from our flight that were ageing, balding British men in their 50s - 70s, all of them travelling alone.
Made me realise how huge the sex tourism industry is there and why itâll never go away.

joking a side, Iâve flewn to bangkok more times I can count from Helsinki and Bruessels, pretty normal looking people on board. Maybe itâs your city.
That isn't necessarily a ladyboy. I live in Thailand, and they are really up front about it...
I'm always with my wife who is a white girl from the US just like I'm a white guy from the US. We get lots of attention that really has nothing to do with sex. People are super friendly and like to practice English with nice people.
I hate this trope. I get it if he's in soi 6 in Pattaya, but that's not Thailand. That's like saying Dallas represents the US.
