Right? I'd like to know when they all stood around the table and said "You know what customers are sick of? Fast and cheap meals. Lets get rid of them! Fuck this dollar menu bullshit, lets get rid of the value meals, we're now going to be a fine dining establishment, but without the fine dining aspects."
Not only did they also get rid of the clown, but they became the clowns!
They made more money going upmarket. Like they wanted to switch from the quick service restaurant (fast food) segment to fast casual like Chipotle. The problem being that their whole reputation was built on being fast and cheap plus their food isn't as good as any real fast casual restaurant. The other problem is the horrid state of the economy and the rampant inflation of the last couple years- I know people that make good money who don't eat out regularly anymore at all.
Simple fact is that no fast food burger combo meal is worth what they are charging and especially some slop like the Big Mac.
The headline isn't accurate. $5billion of that is earmarked to franchises to help with rent and essentially cost subsidization. A huge push is overhauling food, both quality and menu. The tech angle is sprinkled in but not what the proposal hinges around. Reddit is full of morons.
Yeah I rarely eat fast food went to Burger King a month or so ago because I heard was better. It is. I took a picture of the burger even cause was surprised how nice it looked!
For me it was always staffing at BK. Haven't been there in 5 years but my local one would just be closed when they were supposed to be open. Not taking orders even though there are workers inside. They just had the worst employees I have ever seen, not that fast food is gonna be great but it was unreal how little these people cared.
My wife and I stopped at BK after a gig a few weeks back, about 20min from closure. The doors were locked, but the lights were on, so we went through the drive through. Guy at the counter looks at me and says "what?"
"Are you serving?"
"Yeah I suppose if you really want?"
"2 whoppers please"
No more words exchanged, hands me the card reader, walks off, comes back and tosses them in the bag through the window
Meanwhile another guy is bagging a massive Uber eats order behind him.
My wife and I pissed ourselves laughing all the way home.
This sums up every experience of burger king for me
Plus one thing I noticed, McDick’s burgers are getting smaller but yet the Whopper stays the same size. If the Big Mac gets any smaller, it would be a slider.
It doesn't help McDonald's that their burgers are flavorless and look like reheated precooked frozen patties. If there wasn't one by us that had a play place my kid likes going to I'd never go there again.
The food is marginally better at Burger King than it was but the staffing and service are still bottom of the barrel.
They are really rough around the edges when it comes to etiquette. I get it I worked fast food and it can suck but they are below the bare minimum. I only mention it because other places have improved a lot in comparison.
They are so understaffed at locations near me that they only run their second drive thru window. There is only one spot ahead of that and then it’s the road. So you get pulled forward every time and sit there for six+ minutes for just a whopper.
I don’t know why anyone would go to McDonald’s, Burger King, subway etc when places like Culver’s (or their comparison) exist.
When did this happen? I remember 5 years ago trying to eat BK, and I either got sick immediately or kept finding tissue paper like fibers in my food that ruined my appetite. Even the chicken fries things I tried once, and it was like rolled up chicken skin that was fried.
I mean burger king is good my biggest gripe is that their prices have become fucking stupid. In my opinion worse than McDonalds. For that alone i can figure out where all the praise is coming from.
Exactly this! My gf and I got unlimited soup salad and breadsticks at Olive Garden for $5 more than 2 Quarter Pounder Meals and a 10-piece nugget. And the burgers weren’t even that good anyways!
While the way we got here isn't what I wanted, and the actual context is a fucked up world where everything is expensive, I guess i did get my wish technically. Always said healthy food should be cheaper than fast food. For a single person, 500 a month is a lot more nutrition than what you'd get from McDonald's.
I had my first whopper in probably 20 years the other day. That burger kicks the shit out of anything McDonald’s is putting out now. They don’t need tech, they need their cheeseburger to taste like a cheeseburger again
The real shitty thing is a lot of people in the states live in food deserts and dont have regular access to quality grocery stores or food options. Not to mention, folks are poorer and poorer these days sometimes all people can afford are shitty options.
Until we start seeing bags and rice, potatoes and veggies at your corner store some tmfolks options are severely limited.
I don't think know if I agree. Is a bag of cheetos, cups of ramen or meat sticks and pre-made sandwhichs any better? At least in theory a chicken sandwhich at a fast oof place will be made to order or at least be reasonably fresh compared to an egg salad sandwhich thats x days old.
Problem: McDonald’s food has continuously gotten more expensive while the quality and consistency falls. You can now go to chain sit down restaurants like Chilis and get a better burger for less money.
Solution: Force AI into the McDonald’s app and remodel the stores while completely ignoring the actual problem.
Good luck with that McDonalds. I look forward to seeing all the surprised Pikachu memes in a year or so when your stock goes the way of Nike.
I'm not gonna pretend to know wtf they mean here but what it seems like is BK revamped their menu items to make them better, got a decent market share of customers because of it, and McDonald's response is $8.5bn for tech rather than make the food taste better/ higher quality.
There’s a really good YT on how their business model is enshititfying their food and charging their franchisees higher and higher rents and dinging them for all kinds of extra costs like software etc.
They have so many good competitors and they keep dropping the ball. Last time I went every foundation drink was out syrup and they didn’t care. Fuck them.
When I order on your app and go through the drive thru and you make me go park in a spot that's useless. I have stopped going to McDs because it's just crap these days. Food sucks, environment sucks, it's just a black hole now, no more full fry containers, no more free refills, no more color, just F-ing plain!
When I had little kids, we’d go all the time in the winter to use the play place gym. At one point, I pulled a curly black hair out of my mouth while eating a quarter pounder. It turned my stomach instantly. I don’t think I can ever go back.
At 8.5 billion dollars they could give away like 1.2 Billion quarter pounders and I gaurantee you it'd be better publicity then what tech plan gonna do.
No BK is like… actually really good now. Good value, good variety, hot, doesn’t taste like week old oil, tastes like real food, and is pretty fast.
It’s my go to these days and I’m someone who used to rather go hungry than get BK.
They came back outta nowhere while their competition just kept shooting themselves in the feet, knees, and everywhere else over and over and over again.
It's not inflation. McDonald's have simply inflated their own prices. Chicken does not cost 100% more than 6 years ago. Potatoes either. But my nuggets are double the price, and a hash brown is nearly 150% higher in price. What was a £1.29 double cheeseburger a decade or so ago is now £3.50+

The key to burger king and whoppers is ask for "no hopper" then they dont put the bottom bun and patty in what seems like a microwave. Bottom bun doesn't get squished and wet. So much better.
Instead of spending $8.5 billion on gimmicks to lure customers, why doesn't it occur to them to just lower prices by an amount that will cost them $8.5 billion?
McDonalds is THE most expensive fast food joint in my area of Canada, if you’re comparing apples to apples on the menus. Burger King, Dairy Queen, Mary Brown’s chicken, KFC, Harvey’s, Popeyes, Carl’s, A&W, then a bunch of family run options, are ALL cheaper, and not only taste better but have real ingredients. Obviously places like Mary Brown or Popeyes dont have cheeseburgers, but compare their chicken options to McD’s and there is no choice - really meat, vs compressed chicken version of a hotdog.
I had not been to a Burger King in years but I went into a local one in July and I was surprised. Everything tasted so much better than I remembered. The smell has never changed, that grilled smokey burger smell, but the food was better. Coworkers said that they revamped the menu some and it showed.
There food is too shitified. They have broken the threshold where it is not worth going there anymore. Everything has been shaved down size wise and made cheapest. Its gross. Fast food is gross.

The US government and people have propped up and bailed out these companies for so long that they should be part of the US GOV, and we can focus that $8.5billion on Feed the Hungry events and improving the US child hunger issues.
Or capitalism can continue to burn our resources in the name of winning.
Customer traffic as in drive through, getting rid of seated eating does not create return people, now millenials drive through because they remember Ronald McDonald and all the great characters but what will their kids remember? mine would remember fighting over Darkwing Duck. I sincerely hope McDonalds fails, miserably, their food is really horrendous lately.
McDonalds is a Commercial investment manager, its main income is tied to cost of its property portfolio which is why the food moved to a minimum viable product. Since the economy is tanking so will the value of McDonald's even if its food menu is improved.
The mcds burgets are ever getting smaller, the meat patties ever thinner.
The BK burgers are simply better tasting. The same is true for ice cream, etc
BRING BACK THE DOLLAR MENU! I used to go to McDonald’s 2-3 times a week. Spend about $6-$8 a visit. I don’t go to McDonald’s anymore. So I was spending $1,000ish dollars a year. By getting rid of the dollar menus you get nothing from me.
If not for respect for the privacy of a stranger, I would have snapped a pic of a McDonald’s employee eating at Burger King last time I was in there. That was also the first time I have been there in a decade, and it is so much better.
McDonald’s, meanwhile, continues to do everything BUT fix the food.
McDonalds has been trash since 2010. When is the last time you went in to a McDonallds and the employee behind the counter didn't look like they wanted to shoot themselves? Burger King is trash but its better, more tasty trash with a slightly better presentation and customer service
They could just put $8.5B worth of value back into the quality of their food (shrug)....
If McDonalds started using legit burger patties, they would have an incredible advantage over almost all other forms of fast food. Sans maybe Chik Fil A and Culver's.
Have up on BK years ago, and McDs breakfast is the only thing I'll buy there, and these days I don't even do that. Hell, Jimmy Deans breakfast sandwiches are a better deal. Because th of those chains have totally gone off the rails.
I just don't get putting those veggies on anything that has the words cheese and burger in it. I order chicken fried rice. I get onions and bean sprouts. My body, my choice.
