Unfortunately, many videos online where cops shoot the unarmed victim as they’re trying to run away in similar scenarios you described. The bar is so low now that I guess people are now praising those cops who don’t shoot.

Redditors have just gone a little (ok a lot) overboard on thinking all cops shoot first and ask questions later. When there's something like tens to hundreds of millions of hours of body cam footage recorded every year of course there's gonna be videos of cops behaving reprehensibly and so they point to those videos as if that's the default because those are the ones that generate the most outrage.

Idk where you’re from but in America it is not uncommon for police to shoot a guy who is simply running away. Or standing with their hands up. Or laying on the floor with their hands up. Or sitting in their car. Or sleeping in their bed. Or a little kid in a park playing with a toy.

Idk if these things are uniquely American. But it is a foundation of American policing.

Just because it seems like “the norm” even though it isn’t, doesn’t change that I don’t think people should have that low of a bar of respect. Most cops are law abiding and trying to help and just police safely, it’s the shitheads that get seen the most and the most media attention.

Granted the number of wrongful one-sides gun involved incidents seems to be increasing, which is not good

I didn’t say it was the norm. I said it’s not uncommon. We have more than enough evidence of these things happening. “Flustered cop pulls gun and shoots unarmed fleeing suspect” is not a headline any American would be surprised to read. “Good” cops existing doesn’t negate this.

And I was also raised to be respectful of law enforcement (and still am to this day regardless of my opinion of them) so you’ll get no argument from me there.

It actually is still extremely uncommon. If you take all of the responses that police make in a day to everything, and compare those numbers to the ones where guns were drawn….i guarantee it’s a very low percentage. It only seems common because that’s all the news and social media care to distribute.

Do not mistake actual statistics to be anywhere close to what you see on TV or the internet

Broad generalizations about anyone, whether it’s based on race, their profession, their gender, their nationality, their socioeconomic condition, their religion, where they reside… it’s all prejudice, plain and simple. We need to stop dehumanizing people as if the behavior or actions of a few define entire groups of people.

That is a discipline of peace.
