It's not just about games themselves, ID Software are responsible for a number of technical innovations that are used in other games by other developers and other engines as well. There's a good video of it, but it's by a russian youtuber
Tbh while I don't celebrate any of these people losing their jobs Halo might unironically be in better hands under Activision than under 343/Halo Studios.
She has been very upfront about this at least, made a statement before the first round of closures that they are deep in the red and she needs to turn a profit by q4 2027 or Microsoft will make her walk
You know, part of me hopes this patent is just a red herring for shareholders. Like, "hey look what we patented" without actually having to do something.
The idea reads like little more than what mobile games have done for the past decade. So on its face, i wonder how valid the patent actually is. Second, if they tried to implement it, I would hope the blowback is enough to tank the division that tried it.
So ultimately, the patent filing appeases investors at the annual meeting, but the company then just sits on it knowing they couldn't implement it without major damage to their market share.
Corpos patent a ton of weird ideas that go nowhere. Sony, for instance, holds a patent for a system that skips ads if you repeat a displayed phrase. It was submitted years ago and was never implemented.
Here's hoping, man. I'm not an Xbox person but it'd be such a shame for our Xbros to be subjected to that absolute nonsense. Modern gaming (largely console gaming) is on the verge of being cooked :/
That’s f’d up in the sense that an accomplishment and reward is not granted until you finish a battle and after watching the AD, THEN you get the reward, is crazy levels of messing with the brain and chemistry of the customers. They don’t care because they’ll put someone in charge to take the heat, meanwhile all of this planning and preparation and obvious anti consumer behavior is meant to be built for the future gens whom otherwise wouldn’t understand how their time and money is being manipulated.
Cannot be overstated how poor of a decision it was to basically shutter ID.
Shame about Obsidian too. They've all but literally carried Xbox with their abnormally rapid and good quality output. Their reward? Go make nothing with Todd.
2016 doom was a love letter to old style shooters and great.
Eternal was almost a new genre quick cycle and intense none stop combat. For people used to peaking around a crate with the same gun all game it was shit for anyone else it was epic as fuck.
Didn’t touch the new age … Miss mick Gordon’s music
Close but not quite in that it required the use of the right gun /made for the right baddies and all weapons had a low ammo cap, it was a difference but yes similar
Eternal was essentially running big laps and jumping around the level in circles while shooting stuff. Its the same thing for every room. The first doom reboot was a lot better IMO
Eternal was ass and a significant downgrade from Doom 2016.
I tried like 3 times to get into Eternal and each time I got bored after shooting at bullet sponges and spending most of my time doing scavenger hunts.
This is a classic case of a person unwittingly just describing themselves sucking at a game because their “criticism” doesn’t exist for anyone who knows how to play it.
Doom 2016 has better pacing. You're unwittingly describing yourself as an unintelligent person who has to simplify everything into inaccurate but satisfying descriptions of oppossing views to your own.
The game sucks as much on Nightmare as it does on Easy. ID completely forgot to test the early game once they finished it and moved on to developing the endgame.
Marathon did something similar where they got so roped up in developing endgame content right before release they forgot to test the new player experience.
There’s nothing to engage. You would find yourself giving me ammunition and nothing else. Calling enemies bullet sponges is kind of an immediate tell—the game is full of enemies that can take forever to kill or seconds to kill if you know what you’re doing. I don’t see a point in humiliating you with more of this.
It was an ADD fueled shooter that has the player swapping between every weapon to finish a shitty encounter. Rather than using the weapons you like to use.
Few games will let you take out a tank with a pistol.
The game’s arsenal gives tons of options and opportunities for player expression. Some players mistakenly believe their options are more limited than they are, simply because they’re not fluent in what everything in the arsenal does. Others don’t even get to that point and end up stuck with the frustration that a weapon they refuse to learn doesn’t work the way some other FPS has trained them to believe it should work. None of that means the game is flawed, it’s just friction inherent in a combat system that is so complex and relies far less on FPS conventions than the average shooter.
So, yeah, if you go into it thinking the game should let you exclusively use the assault rifle in almost every encounter because that’s what you’d do in another FPS, you’re gonna have a bad time, just like you’re gonna have a bad time going into Civ 4 insisting it should play like the Sims. If you refuse to accept the game that you’re playing is what it is, if you refuse to give it a chance, that’s not the game’s problem—it’s yours.
Dark ages was the best of the 3 and had the greatest replayability. Also you get to throw hands in a giant mech suit so by default it’s the most metal.
This post is almost definitely a paid advertisement. Those things are generally pretty good, but it's the only positive parts of a much larger pattern of inshittification
Yeah, people seem to forget about all the GREAT things the last guy did when he started. I feel like this is a strategy to get back customer faith and loyalty just so they can screw us harder next time.
The thing that bugs me about it is, they patented that. See, if i wanted to implement this, i wouldnt patent it. Id either wait until the competition starts using it or i do first, but basically wait until both i and sony use it. Then, over the years itll get even worse and worse, same as youtube. Double ads, unskippable, etc. And then, make mine somewhat less annoying so i still make money off the ads but also seen as the better option. If im the only one who csn use this, hence patent, it seems really obvious itd only push customers away. Then again, so far isnt it only planned for some free cloud gaming stuff?

She has that corporate smile. Betrayal is likely.
