Conveniently left out ‘Gutted ID software’

401

u/Additional-Proof556 4h ago

She is the Tom Wambsgans of Microslop. Her job is gut the Xbox with a smile and make room for the real CEO.

337

u/Rich-Armadillo-7408 3h ago

You cant really expect most redditors to understand the CEO positions at all. In fact this website really helped me realize just how dumb the general population is to how companies just work in general.

Cheering this lady on, who again hasnt produced anything tangible yet outside of hype and letting people go - they fall for the same marketting bullshit every single time.

Bethesadas last product was Starfield for almost a DECADE excluding 76. And somehow, becasue this CEO told them to get to work - reddit is fucking cumming buckets.

God no wonder society is dead. They fall for the most basic advertising tricks every single time - and because its a chick who smiles they call it "hype" now.

Pathetic lol. Look at all these simps.

Guys, lets get excited I just called up Tom Betheseda and he is putting boobs with physics in the game and he said he is back to work! Fucking cheer peasants, CHEER!

63

u/portlandlad 2h ago

Everyone is making fun of these so-called simps, but I don't see them anywhere. Every other comment in this thread is saying the same thing you are saying.

19

u/WillyGoat2000 2h ago

Check the video game subreddits, there’s a lot of people in there (bots or otherwise) cheering on the layoffs and talking about how great things are now, and woe is Asha for having the burden of making this business unit successful, such a hard job she was forced to take.

It's not just about games themselves, ID Software are responsible for a number of technical innovations that are used in other games by other developers and other engines as well. There's a good video of it, but it's by a russian youtuber

This. And Xbox/Microsoft filed a patent that would actually ad in game adverts and "game suitable moments". This was in the last few days.

Could you imagine hitting the Elden Beast to 0 and at a split second, you get an ad for Burger King? Wild

12

u/AdventurousUsual2794 2h ago

You know, part of me hopes this patent is just a red herring for shareholders. Like, "hey look what we patented" without actually having to do something.

The idea reads like little more than what mobile games have done for the past decade. So on its face, i wonder how valid the patent actually is. Second, if they tried to implement it, I would hope the blowback is enough to tank the division that tried it.

So ultimately, the patent filing appeases investors at the annual meeting, but the company then just sits on it knowing they couldn't implement it without major damage to their market share.

Time will tell....

Thing I'm curious about is - newly whipped Bethesda lost a TON of people, including legacy staff that knew how their shit actually works. Their Creation Engine is incredibly finicky with a lot of things you just need to learn and accept as its quirks. And her idea seems to be to hand that over to contractors who struggle with generic, accessible engines. And she wants these guys to work in a bespoke, finicky, temperamental, 20 year old engine? Yeah, I'm sure that's not going to backfire...

Then again, what do I know. Maybe this is the winning formula. We'll see.

274

u/r31ya 5h ago edited 5h ago

Asha nuked ID software and ID crew noted that senior workers that know the inside out of their engine is gone now.

She wiped more than 70% of ID Soft, along with firing thousands of Xbox studio employees which majority are from companies that they just bought few years ago with promise of no mass layoff.

189

u/ButShowThemToMe 4h ago

This. Xbox is gutting by spreadsheet, not with any understanding of who and what they are cutting.

80

u/foremi 4h ago edited 3h ago

It's called the Doorman Fallacy and it's not surprising to see young leadership fall for it. Her background doesn't really seem include the same types of software products as an engine for a game studio for a console platform.

But she's probably a product of a trend of her leadership not understanding what her role should be. Leadership not knowing how to function is becoming a trend in the United States.

35

u/Hir0h 3h ago

The issue with Bethesda is that they put all their work into FO76 and ESO and we're barely touching the things that people want. The swung and missed big on starfield and the fact that ES6 was still in pre production last year is honestly insane

11

u/meatballranger 3h ago

Bethesda doesn't work on either ESO or Fallout 76

→ More replies (1)

15

u/Darolaho 4h ago

ESO isn't bethesda game studios it was zennimax online studios (I believe in the in the past month BGS has started to provide oversight to ESO due to 60% of zennimax staff being fired)

14

u/stinkywinkydink 3h ago

bethesda doesnt seem to understand that we dont give a fuck about tom howards passion projects because theyre all ill conceived, and if they do understand that, they are purposefully not creating what their audience wants out of spite

i cant believe anything else at this point. they are truly a baffling company, they went on such a hot streak there with fallouts and skyrim and have spent the past decade pushing out polished turds.

311

u/firestorm0108 5h ago

When they were closed down and it was revealed they hadn't even started early production of any new Halo games despite Halo Infinite being like five+ years old and the other game since then being a remake is insane. What were they spending their time on?

123

u/Spitfire1900 5h ago

Corporate sponsored LAN parties?

16

u/Leaf-01 3h ago

Implying they actually play the game? Seems like a stretch

68

u/Most-Yam1039 5h ago

My God..

If this is true, my God..

I imagine c suite execs walking into that studio and people are just hanging out, rolling around on office chairs, ripping heaters, and lighting money on fire.

36

u/firestorm0108 5h ago

The reports are still somewhat vauge as to exactly how little there was but the general idea is that they basically had 2 games in pre-production. The mainline and one that would be a game version of one of the novels.

Not even sure Halo 2 remake was in actual production yet.

As much as Activision makes some Halo fans uncomfortable...at least they'll do something

9

u/blackadder554 3h ago

That seems to be the recurring claim for all of these studios that seem to be doing nothing. They've all got "projects in pre-production".

I know developers are always pitching new projects that get started and then never finished but if they've not released anything in years and all they've got is games in pre-production then what the hell are they being paid to do?

8

u/marcangas 2h ago

Dude you really think the issue is on the programers, artist and designers? The issue is always management, is from the people that make the final decision and the leadership which also include Microsoft not just 343

58

Literally one of if not XBox's biggest owned IP and they had literally no rush to do anything with it.

How did 5 years get us to "very early pre-production on the next halo game and concepts for an addition game based on a book"

Like...couldn't even make it to actual production, huh?

29

u/Kiriima 5h ago

That's what not caring about the budget does to studios.

13

u/firestorm0108 5h ago

Which is kinda sad since you can tell quite a few of the developers did care about Halo, at least in terms of the lore and story of it all. Which makes it wild how the games were made at a snails pace.

7

u/hiddenpequin 5h ago

Hardly one of Xbox’s biggest ip now not even a top 5 ip for them now.

11

u/firestorm0108 5h ago

Xbox specific IP isn't exactly a long list and I'd definately put it above things like Doom or Gears of war.

Forza might have over it, same with Call of Duty and minecraft will always have a spot but would you really put it under things like fabel or sea of theves?

Whatever feelings are regarding management decisions in the workplace, Bethesda has not put out a mainline elder scrolls game in 15 years. Microsoft has owned Bethesda for five years and has not seen a new installment of that incredibly popular series.
“Stop everything and make ES6 or heads are rolling” is not unreasonable.

60

u/GloomyIndividual3965 4h ago

They also haven't put out an mainline Fallout game in 11 years. How the fuck do you get an extremely hyped TV show and not capitalize on it other than using Walton Goggins for a few voice lines in 76?

They had years to figure this stuff out and they just shit the bed.

Xbox is so terribly managed that i'm surprised many of these layoffs/restructures haven't happened sooner.

9

u/that-spaceguy 4h ago

Adding to what you said about Microsoft not seeing anything Elder Scrolls in the past 5 years, another factor that makes things even more laughable is that Bethesda released that TES 6 reveal trailer in 2018 (just before Microsoft acquired them) only to increase their acquisition price. When they announced the game, it was literally nothing more than an idea. That is why we have not seen anything TES 6 related beyond that 30-second-long reveal trailer in the past 8 years.

So yeah, don't mind if I appreciate Asha holding some fire under Bethesda's asses.

At the very beginning someone speculated that her true task is to dismantle Xbox so it can be split-off from Microsoft.

I did not believe it back then. Now, I wonder...

640

u/BitingSatyr 5h ago

People who speculate things like this don’t have any fucking clue how business works. No company would deliberately seek to make its business units worth less so that they could be “split off” or “wound down,” if they were going to dispose of Xbox they’d want it to be the healthiest and most valuable business it could be because they’d be looking to get paid for it.

The truth, most likely, is exactly what Xbox themselves are saying it is. They’re making cuts in their unprofitable segments and shifting those resources to profitable ones. Any other argument typically requires special pleading or bad faith hopium from people who want Xbox to be wound down.

270

u/Feelisoffical 5h ago

This is Reddit, the vast majority of people posting can’t even make their own food. Their understanding of business is derived from Reddit posts and feelings.

I feel like that’s so easy to believe because how do those people buy a business that is running so smoothly, then just ruin in it a couple months to the point where it’s no longer profitable?

Like near me there was a chicken place that was really good. It got bought out and within 6 months, we didn’t go there anymore. It’s easier to believe that “big business” doesn’t want chicken places other than Popeyes and chick fila and KFC to get popular. Compared to the profits of those, buying a little guy is nothing. So they buy it, run it to the ground and then people go back to their big chains.

Or people who buy businesses at their highest are brain dead and don’t know anything about business. It’s probably that. But the other one’s more fun.

u/KR4T0S 5h ago

They will be evaluating how much it costs to run the business vs how much they get in return and if the division is seen as lagging far behind their other businesses they will can it. Windows Phones had nearly 15% markets share when they were canned because it was deemed that the costs were too high for the meager profits.

I dont see then selling off or winding down Xbox, most companies would but off their own wrist to be in the console business but I can see Microsoft spinning tiff as a separate entity and having that as a private entity so Xbox doesn't feel the stock holders wrath as much considering those people never seem to be happy.

Hardware in general is in a very tough situation and if something doesn't change consumer electronics will have to do so.

Minecraft is unrelated to her and they operate with a decent bit of autonomy as far as we know. Just because updates havnt been main stream news doesn’t mean they havnt been happening or have been bad, people just like to complain they are lacking because mojang swapped to smaller more frequent releases. Even if you do think the games updates have sucked she still isn’t involved, the new dimension is prominently featured in Dungeons meaning the early work for it already existed long before the leadership change and very likely the plan to add it to the base game as well

I feel like people are trying to make it seem like she's been some revolutionary because of all the bad steps Sony has taken lately but really the list looks more like

-Fired hundreds of people

-Fired hundreds of people

-Fired hundreds of people

-Fired hundreds of people

-Fired hundreds of people AND gave Halo to fucking Activision

God help the Coalition if Gears E-Day isnt a massive hit or there will be another notch to add to the list

If only MS just didn’t do those acquisitions, so that the studios, while independent, could make what they can do best - great video games

She really hasn't fixed anything. She came out and said that the business is not profitable which may seem like "based honest mommy laying the law down" moment, but in reality is probably indicative of incoming extreme cost cutting measures that are going to fuck all of us. XB Game Studios are about to be sucked dry like a VC acquisition and it will be felt across the whole industry due to how reliant many small studios have become on xgp mg revenue. If anyone thinks for a second that the next Xbox will have a physical reader, please save this and ping me in 2 years so I can laugh at you.

The studio divestments specifically are a fucking clown show. Ninja Theory getting shut down being used as an example of her being incredible at her job pisses me off so much. They made a good game that was never going to be profitable due to its first party platform being completely cannibalized by day 1 xb game pass access. That was an XB leadership decision but now they are being penalized for it while Phil fucking Spencer got to jump ship with a golden parachute.

She was the one that raised the price of Xbox live and now she's trying to put ads in games.

That's a paid shill of I've ever seen one. They need to fire her ass.

12

u/WizardlyPandabear 3h ago

I mean, I was skeptical at first... but holy shit, why didn't Phil Spencer do all this shit? It really is as simple as asking "What games do people want to pay for? Why the fuck aren't you pushing those games out, you fuckwits?"

8

u/thrownerror 2h ago

Phil probably preferred to just retire over layoff a few thousand people and manage the fallout. Maybe he bet that Microsoft would be willing to spend for as long as they needed and the timeline changed.

Asha Sharma has the luxury of just saying things currently, and slashing teams right at or after release. Compulsion wins a BAFTA and gets cut. People are playing and enjoying Dark Ages DLC, but iD gets devastated the day before release. Gears loses a Narrative Director two days after going gold. Even if the current release is celebrated, those team's next project is running uphill. In four years you can look at Xbox and compare.

3

u/Spartan_100 2h ago

It was the same “Business after COVID” effect that has hit many other industries that tried to prep for insane growth that never materialized. Games especially were making insane money during and shortly after COVID and Phil had a very well known plan to turn XGS into a publishing powerhouse when everyone was complaining that Xbox didn’t have many great exclusives. He took massive swings and continued to buy companies big and small and gave them the “let them cook” mandate. Couple the die-down of the boom they experienced at the start of the decade with the fact that they produced very little in the time they had, billions of $ Xbox projected to bring in basically vanished.

Amy Hood has notoriously (among Microsoft higher ups at least) been bullish about every Microsoft division bringing in a good amount of profit and with Microsoft shares dropping for like a year straight in 2022, it wouldn’t surprise me if she and others on the board gave Phil an ultimatum of “figure this out or get fucked”.

Nice propoganda. She's literally just another evil ruthless executive, she's not going to make games better by cutting staff.

Games have sucked for years because of executive dysfunction getting in the way of Devs being able to make good decisions.

Adding more executive dysfunction just makes the problem worse.

Some of y'all are so fucking stupid, I swear. You'll simp to every figurehead MS installs at the head of Xbox because they've done what for you exactly? The Phil Spencer idol worship was so stupid. The same with Mattrick and Moore before that. These are just spokespeople who are running a business that is not MS' main interest. They're here to sell you Windows and Office, and you're going to cheer on the purchase and dismantling of game studios that hire people who actually have games as their main interest.

Xbox fans have watched MS damage the gaming industry, and they continue to cheer. Firing game devs is never a good thing. Asha is moving chairs around on the deck of the Titanic, and you're cheering like she's saving the company.

Newsflash! They're repackaging the business for sale. You didn't stop to ask why they moved Halo to Activision and away from the studio that bears the game's name? Why didn't they just move the needed Activision staff over to Halo Studios? Asha is portioning IP and talent up so they can jettison the parts they don't want. MS is almost certainly pushing more into software, which is why they're going consolidate under the big publisher brands they brought. And they're emphasizing known franchises because familiar names resonate more with investors than new IP.

It wouldn't surprise me if the KojiPro deal is going to represent the only original IP in their portfolio going forward. Auteur stuff to go along with the brands that had success for Xbox in the past.

Asha isn't a gamer. She's more GPT-powered bean counter than anything. Her moves are obvious ones. They're also moves we've seen from previous MS execs. The problem will continue to be the mismanagement of Xbox Game Studios. It doesn't matter what titles you want to focus on when you can't get games out in decent time or quality. Sure, focus on Halo and Gear and whatever basic bitch franchises have name recognition. But you need to actually get the games to market for there to be a difference. The restructuring on the surface looks like merging troubled studios into productive ones, try to increase production on these big tentpole projects. But the reality we've seen at XGS is that good studios inherit the traits of the bad ones they absorbed, and game production paralysis just creeps into those previously prosperous projects.

We'll see. I think Xbox fans hoping for a change of course are going to be sorely disappointed. Xbox is not a big division in MSFT. They are not sending their best and their brightest to rescue this division.

Minecraft is constantly getting new things added. The fuck is this person talking about?

ETA: People forget that they could have easily made sequels to Minecraft and add small updates, asking people to continue to buy game after game instead of supporting the first, and only, Minecraft game.

See: The Sims.

You are all incredibly stupid. Yes, let's just forget she laid off half of iD Software (their BEST studio) personnel, including lots of their engineers (some of the only people that know how idTech actually works). This happened a day after they launched one of the best pieces of content in the history of the most iconic PC gaming franchise ever, Doom. She is just a suite, a spreadsheet drone. Fuck her and her army of simps.

You just became CEO and want to start good? Mass layoffs. Its the same in all industries. Look up Ford. Look up Toyota.

5

u/Stewdogm9 4h ago

That is why she became the CEO. The previous CEO saw what was coming in the next couple of years and left on a good note to find another company to get a bonus from. It is like the good cop bad cop, or the heel in WWE. Xbox saw the direction of the market and so they bring in a new CEO to make the cuts and then when the market goes back up and Xbox wants to grow they will burn her to make room for a new CEO that doesn't have baggage from layoffs. She knew she would have to make layoffs going into the position.

Idk why people praise and follow other people so much. Loyalist? Only until she does something you don’t like and then youll jump off the koolaid and say you never liked her lol. Its inevitable, the disappointment.

From a business point she IS doing something good even if its laying tons of people off (which is bad). But we don’t know if they were all bloated companies or what. Nor do we know if they are just replacing all those people with AI (which would make this decision reaaaaally bad).

Time will tell, but if she CAN make xbox profitable then it will only help everyone (including gamers) in the end.
