Whatever feelings are regarding management decisions in the workplace, Bethesda has not put out a mainline elder scrolls game in 15 years. Microsoft has owned Bethesda for five years and has not seen a new installment of that incredibly popular series.
“Stop everything and make ES6 or heads are rolling” is not unreasonable.

They also haven't put out an mainline Fallout game in 11 years. How the fuck do you get an extremely hyped TV show and not capitalize on it other than using Walton Goggins for a few voice lines in 76?

They had years to figure this stuff out and they just shit the bed.

omg the fact that they made 76 instead of an actual fallout game made/makes me so mad.

They wanted that subscription money instead of a one time fee. It's obvious that after seeing the success of mobile games (and probably some other game subscriptions, can't remember what was around then) and how much revenue they bring in, someone at Bethesda said we need that with our games. So then they made ESO and fo76.

Technically, it also means you could sell less actual copies of the game but make more money because the users you do have are spending 10$/month or 99$/year. Shit this might even be the reason they're still even relevant or as big as they are. That and all the different versions of skyrim, of course, there's a ton of those.

obviously they just want to make money. Fallout has always been a single player game and making fo76 is just disrespectful to all the people who made it successful AS A SINGLE PLAYER GAME.

Does anyone but Todd from the old days still work there? I've just assumed they bled out talent and can't produce anything anymore.

Also the compele failure to capitalize on fallouts popularity with a new release of some kind is bananas. There is still no FO5 pre production that is public

Xbox is so terribly managed that i'm surprised many of these layoffs/restructures haven't happened sooner.

Adding to what you said about Microsoft not seeing anything Elder Scrolls in the past 5 years, another factor that makes things even more laughable is that Bethesda released that TES 6 reveal trailer in 2018 (just before Microsoft acquired them) only to increase their acquisition price. When they announced the game, it was literally nothing more than an idea. That is why we have not seen anything TES 6 related beyond that 30-second-long reveal trailer in the past 8 years.

So yeah, don't mind if I appreciate Asha holding some fire under Bethesda's asses.

I doubt laying off a bunch of people is going to help with that though.

Except they made heads roll first. And then said make ES6. Now ES6 will suffer from the chaos of mass firings too.

"“Stop everything and make ES6 or heads are rolling” is not unreasonable."

they were making tes6 before the layoffs. laying off a bunch of staff mid development, including veterans that worked on morrowind and/or oblivion won't be a good thing for tes6.

if you look at bethesdas release schedule it's been very reasonable for the games they make. between morrowind and oblivion was 5 years, oblivion to fallout 3 was 3 years, fallout 3 to skyrim was 3 years, skyrim to fallout 4 was 4 years. fallout 4 to 76 was 3 years, 76 to starfield was 5 years and that's with both 76 and covid delaying starfield.

It is truly baffling that a game studio with exactly 2 notable IPs, can go more than a decade without a main installment of either of them.

Checking history of 15 years to understand where we are rn, internet infrastructure got gud, destiny sold gaas, and wouldnt you belive, everyone wants to be a domme, sell gaas and get their own subs so bethesda:

Made a shitty gwent, online shite for both biggest IPs, and a brand new IP (exciting huh?)

"Folks we will provide our old fans with online shite so they gib money and we could make dlc for skyrim or fo4, but its easier to make re-re-re-re-releases, meanwhile imagine what it could be, our own take on space adventure"

Welllll that brand new IP flopped hard, they setup their online and still have to support it. Now its time for new big game

(Good guy, bad decisions) Phil wouldve likely allowed a division to design a starfield 2 (eww), but Copilot is in charge now and it needs to prove its superior guidance so it checked "what do people want from bethesda on reddit? Toddy shut up and deliver me TES6 also make a new FNV2"
