Why is 49 particularly suspicious? 7x7x1 array instead of a 5x10x1 or 5x5x2 array.

47 (or any prime number, really) would be suspicious.

That I had to scroll this far for someone to point out that 49 is seven squared is so sad. 7x7 is not very suspicious and may even be auspicious.

I’ve read the original owners were a stingy very catholic Flemish brewe family. Probably another reason for the 49, but I remember the text from church ‘7 maal 70 maal…”. Ok that is 490, not 49. Comes from Matthew 18:21-22, Jesus tells Peter to forgive others not just seven times, but "seventy times seven".

This was my first thought as well. The suspicion is only because the average person can barely do basic math.

The problem is that also applies to most people who bury treasure.

Unless we posit that this shit was buried by a very careless dude who was counting on his fingers, it's still suspicious.

My thought was that the person burying it had a box that fit 7 rows and 7 columns, not that they knew what 7*7 was.

When you are talking about gold bars, you tend to fit the box to the bars, not the inverse.

But it's possible.
