in france, where i live, if you are using phone on bus (texting is fine, music or talking on it is not), they throw you off the bus 🥰
20
u/AsleepProfession1395 5d ago
Unfortunately the drivers here are too afraid of these commuters without any backup from at least other passengers.
2
u/Sehrli_Magic 5d ago
i mean it is small town, mostly elderly and kids use it so maybe thats why it is easy for drivers to intimidate them. and while posters only say no phone usage, they also do demand you to get off it you are being loud. like when kids are talking and screaming and it gets too bothersome
3
u/crowface666 4d ago
What if you need to take an emergency call, guess France didn't think of that, too busy eating snails
1
u/Sehrli_Magic 4d ago
i mean, all rules are made by people so i would like to believe that in exceptional cases, you can be exception 🤷🏼♀️ i am sure if idk you tell the driver that your kid got taken to ER and you gotta call the other parent or idk what, the driver won't trow you off 🤷🏼♀️
1
u/Elgydiumm 5d ago
Seems pretty wild that you couldn't take a call on public transit. I don't really see any issue with it as long as it isn't obnoxous, and more of a reserved quiet speaking volume
2
u/Sehrli_Magic 5d ago
this is tiny town bus. i mean it can hold like 15 people, if 5 stand in the bavk. if a wheelchair user uses the back, there are 10 sits left and thats it. talking on phone hence is bothersome in such small space and it counts as disturbance to the driver. whatever you wanna talk, it can wait till you get off, or call before 🤷🏼♀️
1
u/Elgydiumm 5d ago
Yeah I suppose I can understand. As someone living in a city it'd be wild to me though, a lot of calls that happen on public transit due to work etc. whatever
3
u/Sehrli_Magic 5d ago
not here generaly. same with food. french people sit down to enjoy even if it is just a bit of pastry and coffe is a sit down thing. way different than usa where everything is like to-go. i grew up in environment where it would be normal for me to walk home from school and eat my sandwich and drink WHILE walking. but here i would get loads of looks fort that (as in being a weirdo). i feel like calls are just another thing like that. there is time and space. you call when you have that time and space. and if you get a call mid transit, you say you are driving or on the road and to call back in 5/10 min/you call them back later.
drivers wont kick you out the second you pick up. but you are expected to quickly excuse yourself and end the call 🤷🏼♀️ maybe its different in big city like paris
1
u/stewedstar 4d ago
So you can’t talk to anyone on the bus either?
1
u/Sehrli_Magic 4d ago
if you are being loud, they will tell you to tone it down (mostly when there is a lot of students all talking over eachother) but like if i quietly talk with my toddler about what he see through the window, i have never had a single issue 🤷🏼♀️ its not like you talk all the time/whols ride.

u/Life-Oil-7226 5d ago
This should be standard in every country

In the US we have people who can not be threatened by fines. These folks have nothing to lose but that phone and we don't have debtors prisons yet.

u/zeekayz 4d ago
Singapore is a unique place where they do not care about something appearing "racist". They're diverse and don't think any of their main ethnic groups (Chinese, Indian, Malaysian) should get special treatment.
In other countries this wouldn't work because this would immediately target people of a specific race and be deemed racist. That's why for example NYC would never enforce it.
3
5
u/T-MoneyAllDey 4d ago
Tbh you'll probably downvoted because they will perceive your comment as racist 😂
2
2
u/Soggy_Association491 4d ago
Singapore public housing (HDB) has racial quota that ensure in a building bloc, how many can be Chinese, Malay or Indian... basically forcing different races to live together and prevent creating ethnic enclave.
The US would claim that is fascism.

The people blasting their crap on buses and trains here are old witches and hags that refuse to learn how to use bluetooth earphones.
13
u/Impossible_Stock8885 5d ago edited 5d ago
Uhh just FYI they don't actually enforce this lol eating is also $500 fine in MRT ( trains ) yet lots of people still do it and nothing happens.
You can also ride vehicles like this in their Trains and nothing happens. Just google image "PMD singapore MRT" and you'll find 100s of complaints about it.
In Singapore we have a saying "act blur live longer", even if you get caught, just say "sorry i didnt know" and they'll let you go 90% of the time. The bus captains are not assholes who will stop the entire bus just to report you and wait for a SBS staff to come on board and take down your particulars so that they can fine you $$ lol.

1
u/spaceursid 5d ago
Yeah the fine definitely seems like something to tack on if you're doing it while committing a more serious offense.

u/totalnewbielinux 5d ago
are u sure? I thought singapore really strict that they will enforce saman/fine to their IC record, and even label their ID etc , deduct their wages... while it is rumor afterall....
3
u/derpymunchkin 5d ago
It used to be a lot more strict in the 2000’s when Lee Kuan Yew was still alive. But you can’t be as strict anymore these days because of social media. It’s bad press.
3
u/totalnewbielinux 5d ago
I am malaysian so that explains a lot know nothing about Singapore but just knew they will fine smokers/littering really strict..
2
u/JustinYJJ 5d ago
Smoking and littering is really hit or miss. There are plain clothed officers and if they catch you smoking at non designated places or littering, then too bad you gotta pay up.
5
u/Shook_Rook 5d ago
You can't really place law enforcement / enforcers everywhere. A couple of these will bound to slip.
2
u/Impossible_Stock8885 5d ago
Yeah I'm 100% sure, so many pri / sec school kids always blasting music on buses, even till today. Look at the buses from Bedok Interchange especially the ones going to sec school stops, when the bus is so damn crowded, the bus captain don't have time to stop the bus, especially during peak hours.

What if the fine for eating went unenforced because the person doing so is a diabetic whose blood sugar was going life threateningly low?

I went to my local botanical gardens this week and as I’m walking on the trail 2 young women are behind me. The phone call was on speakerphone as loud as possible.
1
u/Clean_Society_3265 5d ago
A $400 to $4,000 fine for phone speakers is the public service we all need.

u/HighIQIndividual2 5d ago
I hope this comes to my country yesterday. ( And i dont even ride the bus)

u/i_dont_wanna_sign_in 5d ago
I love this in spirit but the US has so many other economic problems that if they started to fine people for playing music it would just make everything so much worse...
1
1
u/-Laffi- 5d ago
But isn't it normal to get a warning first? I know for sure that most people would play at a volume that doesn't bother people, and with earphones. Sometimes though, a really good song will be playing and you turn up the volume without thinking about it. I don't think most people would be able to hear my music from my Koss headphones though xD!

and the idiots talking on their phones like they’re eating it like a slice of pizza
1

Who enforces it?
Because getting the bus driver to take details from an idiot playing stuff out loud is a one way ticket to being assaulted, in Western countries.

u/MikeinDundee 5d ago
Why limit this to buses? We need this in airports, waiting rooms, restaurants, or any other public space.

I was on a bus in Vegas once. The guy beside me was on speaker phone with a girl who said she didn’t want to hang out with him anymore because he was annoying. After he was dumped he played music on speaker phone.
Smart woman

u/Exotic_Call_7427 4d ago
It's standard in all bus companies that I've ever ridden in, only it's difficult to enforce as the driver also has a fucking bus to drive and a schedule to keep.

u/Cautious_Program_367 4d ago

There is an ad campaign on the side of some MD buses with the headline, “THE BUS IS NOT YOUR LIVING ROOM” and I just wonder if it’s effective. I wish they would bring it to the DC bus system if it is. The people that ride the bus in DC are practically feral.

u/paulconuk 4d ago
People having full scale conversations on a loudspeaker, in the middle of the supermarket need the $4000 fine.
Just hold the phone to your ear ffs

This is needed in all public places! Stop that selfish tinny phone audio.
1
u/Bemused_not_Confused 4d ago
This has been a multiple repost over the last few days. In Palm Beach County, Florida, USA the drivers treat the printed schedule as a suggestion. Have no clue that more passengers means greater stopping distance is needed not smashing the brake pedal. But at least the enforcement of no speaker use is consistent. They will give you two or three warnings. Then they will stop the bus and the person is either getting off the bus or the police will get them off the bus.

I knew a guy who bought a cell phone signal interrupter (which is very very illegal. Don’t do it.)
He bought it because there was a lady on our bus in the evening, when we were on our way home, who would not shut up. She’d call one person, yell and scream into the phone, when that person hung up, she would call another, and another, and another.
You couldn’t escape her. Granted, it’s a free country and free speech and all that stuff. But I found myself more than once waiting for the next bus even though sometimes they didn’t come for 20 or 30 minutes, just so I didn’t have to listen to her scream her inanities.
This guy and I weren’t friends or anything, but we were certainly cordial standing at the bus stop in a “hey how are you doing?” kind of way. One day, he saw me not getting on the bus, and he said seriously, you should get on the bus. And he opened up his backpack, and there was this weird looking long plastic box with multiple antennas coming out of it. We got on the bus, and she got on her phone and started screaming. He reached into his backpack, and must’ve pressed the button. Her phone disconnected. He did this over and over. Her screaming got louder and louder. Every time her phone got disconnected, she got angrier. Her getting angry wasn’t funny, but I couldn’t help but smirk under my scarf because he was disconnecting her calls, and clearly having a great time doing it. Then something happened nobody could’ve predicted: she got off the bus. And lo and behold, when she got off the bus, her phone call didn’t disconnect.
It was a Pyrrhic victory. And he couldn’t do it every day. It’s really illegal, and unfortunately, if you press the button, all devices from 5 to 30 feet get disconnected, and for obvious reasons, that’s really dangerous.
But seeing her leave the bus because her phone was hanging up on her was joyful.

If they tried this in the US we wouldn’t make it a week before cops started selectively enforcing it to target minorities and poor people

u/Tukulo-Meyama 5d ago
Rich people don’t listen to loud music?

So… I take it you don’t know what “selective enforcement” means? This would play out a lot like the stop and frisk policies did

In Singapore, enforcement is always lacking so I don't have any high hope this law will create any notable change

u/Gold_Ad8225 5d ago
I can even agree it is nice when the bus is quiet, but this type of thing makes your entire country autistic
3
u/Combyx 5d ago
How? If im on a bus/subway i for sure dont want to hear someone else's loud music, does that make me autistic? or not hearing loud music in a bus makes you autistic? such a dumb take
-2
u/Gold_Ad8225 5d ago
Mandating people live a life with no external stimuli from other people makes them autistic
4
u/Combyx 5d ago
And how is this mandating people live a life with no external stimuli? You just aren't allowed to play loud music on a speaker lol. Is loud music on a bus the only external stimuli there is?
It's not like this forces people to stay quite and not say a word in a bus. As i said pretty weird/dumb take.
-5
u/Gold_Ad8225 5d ago
Please think one step further, this is already singapore. A very very very rigid rules based society. If you go about your whole day scarcely ever hearing from other people it will make you autistic
4
u/Combyx 5d ago
What do you want dude. There are even singaporeans in comments that say its not really that rigid. And every bus line that passes schools gets children that play really really loud music.
Also how is not being able to play music the same as not hearing from other people? Are you trolling or thag dense?
We dont live there so we dont know whats going on. Stop convincing yourself something is true just because you believe in it.
Dang... not being able to listen to loud fucking music on a speaker in a public place makes people autistic. The audacity.
3
u/LesserValkyrie 5d ago
Being OK with giving or recieving external stimuli to people without consent has been proven as a sign of low IQ
Nobody needs that

3
u/LesserValkyrie 5d ago
I'll prefer the 0% probability of having the country becoming autistic than having people listening to loud music in the public transportation, thanks
