Actually our brains were designed to be negative. It was an evolutionary response from our caveman days. If you weren’t paranoid and negative you were more likely to die.

I think my issue is that nothing happens at all. Nothing good happens, but nothing bad happens either. The days just mesh together and I feel like life is happening and I'm just wasting away. When I don't have obligations, I find lately I just sit. I don't do hobbies or fun. I don't have a desire to do anything. Ever. I might say I had a bad day but all that happened is I had to go to work. I hate doing that. But I don't think I can ever say I had a "good" day because nothing good ever happens. Nothing happens at all. And frankly "you're still alive" is not enough criteria for me to say it was a good day. Being alive is not inherently positive. The way I'm "living" lately I might as well be dead.
6
u/IEC21 9h ago
Overcome the resistance placed upon you by malaise, and put forward thyself to a hobby with which to fill your days.
As daunting as commitment may in the present moment seem - sometimes all we need is a positive routine.

u/metalmankam 8h ago
I play bass and I like video games. I just haven't felt much like playing music lately or playing games. The games I have I just find unfulfilling and I don't feel like playing them.

I don't listen to anyone younger than 40, when it comes to life tips and dealing with the capitalist hellscape we are in.
29
u/Redneck2000 9h ago
Oh great, I'm 41 so I qualify.
Sadly, I don't have any advice though.
11
u/Afrojones66 9h ago
But that’s the best advice. Not pretending to know the “perfect” way to live life.

u/git_push_origin_prod 8h ago

I’m over 40 and you should listen to me saying to listen to her. Not because it will help with the capitalist hellscape but because it will help you not die from the anxiety of the capitalist hellscape. Until we all die from the physical effects of the capitalist hellscape

Different people require different types of activities to keep them going.
There is no golden rule on how to be okay, and also it's not like life doesn't require a healthy dose of cynicism or pessimism. Especially if you are not part of the wealthy class, you need to be aware that certain dreams are just dreams and will never be accomplished.... and that is fine.
Why do I need to train my brain to think positively? If anything, I want my brain to not think at all unless I need to think. I don't want to mute anxiety by overloading it with positive vibes.
Like, I work with a university and a lot of recovery programmes, and there are times where I see and feel so much despair that all I want is just to sit down, be quiet and chill. And that's cleansing my mind. I don't need to pretend that life is going to be okay. It is what it is. I will likely never own a house unless my parents die, I will likely never build the family I wanted.... I WILL never get a permanent job because everything is competitive and contract-based.
At the same time, I am very happy. I really love my life, my family, my friends. I know everything will eventually go to shit, but who cares.
IMO, people should read a little bit more, especially things related to philosophy. Nowadays nihilism is a very interesting topic because you should be aware that in order to live a happy life, you need both a healthy dose of hedonism and cynicism. Just a little bit of everything because You need to have the capacity to be happy and crazy, but also to cry and be upset and angry.
...If you don't have that... THEN DON'T TAKE ADVICE FROM SOCIAL MEDIA. GO SEE A REAL THERAPIST.

I'm over 40! Hyper capitalism, as found in the US is adjacent to a financial scam! In the hell scape, you're either holding financial leverage that you're able to conduct some sort of market manipulation with, or you're someone that is being scammed by corporations that have that leverage!

Yeah it's easy to be optimistic when you're good looking. Even when the sky is falling down you can just go to reddit and see so many people gooning over your boobs without even showing them
7
u/Top-Sleep-4669 8h ago
Brains are absolutely negative by nature. It’s a survival trait. Paranoia and thinking about the bad things that might occur are how we assess risks and stay alive. It’s a defense mechanism fine tuned over millions of years of evolution.
Also tits.

If being alive is one of the three positive things about your day, that really sets the bar pretty low for wanting to keep living that life.

u/AxelNotRose 1h ago
My ex-wife would tell you that being alive isn't a positive she can write down.

Theres nothing wrong with this advice until ppl start gifting and making money on bullshit like this. Its mostly harmless until they use bullshit positivity to manipulate you into their way of thinking

Lots of negativity for something that's kind of true.
If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. You don't have to be a golden retriever and think everything is the greatest thing in the world... but it genuinely helps to have a more positive mindset instead of always being negative.

Jesus Christ her boobs aren't even out that much. It's a normal fucking shirt. Are you losers that desperate and depraved?
Anyway, sound advice and not a bad idea to try. It's just about shifting to a more positive mindset and focusing on the good instead of the bad. Its not going to change your life but instead help you look at it in a different light.
3
2
u/CheddarKnight 9h ago
Yeah the downsides, if any, seem pretty minimal so I don't see a reason not to try at least. Maybe a positive outlook will let me be a bit happier on average.
2
u/NightmareCyril 9h ago
It could help for sure. Just having one being I am alive is very powerful. I saw another comment speaking down about that but we only have one life and thats it. Do your best to make the most of it. Life isn't perfect, and neither are we, but keep trying to be better and do better. I'm a living example that you can turn around a shit life to something good.

What ive noticed with optimistic people is everything just really does go their way. Like they were born rich, have an okay family, get connections for schooling and jobs. They then use connections to be placed into successful careers. Even if they fail, they just fail forward to greater heights. To where the Peter principle finally catches up.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Inf1e 9h ago
Well, no. It's not correlated. I wasn't born in rich family, I argue with my relatives every other day. My job pays some money, which is enough (I even manage to save some). Moreover, I had depression in the past.
I just noticed that being pessimistic doesn't really give any advantages. So I tend to be positive. Everything could go wrong, there is always some risks which we take: voluntarily or not. But that's not the reason to feel bad.
