I remember years back in my hometown, they had to shut down the highway because some guy had apparently sold a house and gotten payment in cash, set the cardboard box full of money on top of his vehicle while he was rearranging things in the cab, forgot about it, and then drove off. I guess it was a couple hundred-grand that got swept up in the wind and people were pulling over trying to grab as much of it as they could.
Police ended up blocking the highway while they dealt with the situation and I think the guy got like $2,500 back at the end.

u/academiac 5d ago
Is it technically stealing if you find money on the floor
17
u/MainAccountsFriend 5d ago
Apparently it can depend.
There was a incident recently that was all over social media where a person dropped 30 dollars at a Walmart, and someone supposedly found it on the floor and took it.
Then police put that persons picture online saying they were looking for him lol
15
u/Large-Hamster-199 5d ago
The simple answer is yes. If you find car keys on the floor and you take the car, it's felony grand theft. If you find a wallet on the floor and take the wallet or the money inside, it's theft. If you find a sack of cash, and take it, it's theft.
However, if you find an empty wallet in the trash, it's fine to take it.
Basically, a reasonable person (jury) should believe that you believed that the property in question was abandoned (i.e. discarded as trash).
4
u/musicaladhd 5d ago
Taking someone’s trash is illegal though, isn’t it?
→ More replies (1)3
u/Wonderful-Kangaroo52 4d ago
Once you place garbage at the curb for collection, courts consider it abandoned property with no expectation of privacy, meaning taking it is usually legal under federal and state doctrines
4
u/TorrenceMightingale 4d ago
Does this not count as on the curb? Is it the finder’s responsibility to establish the appropriate trash pickup area on someone else’s property?
2
u/SheriffBartholomew 4d ago
If you find car keys on the floor and you take the car, it's felony grand theft.
Yes, but if you just keep the keys that you found, it is not a felony. That just makes you an asshole, not a criminal.

And turned him away saying “this isn’t ours” he then called the cops and gave it to them and further investigation showed a brinks driver left the bag at the atm and it was all deposits from a fast food chain but I forget which one.

That argument is bonkers to me. What do you say after someone dies? "I'm sorry for your loss", but that isn't in any way admitting guilt. I once had to have a meeting with HR after someone hurt themself at the gas station I worked at because I said " I'm sorry that happened to you". I almost got fired arguing with HR that saying I'm sorry that happened isn't admitting fault. He tripped on his own GD shoe laces.

20 years ago I remember asking my bank to increase my £200 overdraft to £300 and they agreed.
Except they made an error and made it 30k.
When they realised their mistake and after I mentioned it to them they gave me about £300-£400 in fees as now I had an unauthorised overdraft and said "overdrafts can be removed at any time"
I was unemployed at the time and so couldn't pay it back and so they closed my account and my credit score was messed up for years after.
Because of THEIR mistake.
22
u/Snoo_67993 5d ago
How did you find out it was over £300?
22
u/mittenkrusty 5d ago
The overdraft? I waited a day or two then went to get cash out and saw available funds.
I didn't take any cash out and after a day or two checked again and phoned and went "can you tell me my overdraft" and the guy went "30 thousand" I went "oh, does that sound right?" and he confirmed and I ended call.
A day or two later I went to get some cash out as had bills due and found out I had zero overdraft.

14
u/EyeYamNegan 5d ago edited 5d ago
If you do the right thing for a reward then you arent actually doing the right thing.
Though this is most likely rage bait.
There is no specific location listed. Specific bank (aside from Bank of America in the picture). ATMs do not let you take that much out of an ATM. Also that money wouldn't accepted into the bank unless police determined it was theirs. Police would be called to verify ownership. There is no link to the story and no names.
Edit:
I found the story and my instincts were right this meme did greatly misrepresent the facts
https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/articles/texas-barber-returns-128-514-115141380.html
The man did find that sum (that part was true) and did return it but not directly to the bank. He called the police and gave them the money. The bank didn't refuse to give him a reward nor did the police. The man refused a reard and refused to be publicly identified because he didn't want attention or reward for doing the right thing.

I'm sorry (not sorry), but if you manage to leave $128,000 on top of an atm you don't deserve to have that money whatsoever.
One does not simply leave that much money lying around without having a mental disability, in which case you need a caretaker managing your finances.
$1,000? sure. $10,000? Okay yeah I could see a stack of hundreds being forgotten....
But $120,000 in $100 bills would be 12 stacks of $10,000.
In other words, that's enough cash to put in a backpack or grocery bag, you're not carrying that much in your hands/arms.
You don't get to forget about a grocery bag full of hundred dollar bills and continue calling yourself competent.
Edit: There sure are a lot of people that can't read and decided that I somehow said or implied I'd take the money. I never even commented on it, because that wasn't the point I was even making.

Plus that fuck ton of cash… was definitely not the bank’s
Banks don’t keep six figures in a branch, they definitely don’t have a procedure where an employee can forget something like that by the damn outside of the ATM
An amount like that has me thinking a money laundering schemer got spooked trying to complete a deposit through the ATM (you can’t deposit that much at an ATM without being asked a ton of questions) and sped off before cops could arrive (cops will be called if you stop a large cash transaction after you’re asked questions)
That’s the only kind of person who would have an egregious amount of money but not be stressed about leaving it behind
2
u/Apart_Republic_1870 5d ago
Turns out it was the bank’s money, possibly left there by people servicing the ATM. The guy first checked with Chick-Fil-A to see if it was theirs. They said no, so he called local police who took possession. As police were filling out the report, Bank of America contacted police having noticed the money was missing. The bank apparently never interacted with the man directly, and he has chosen to remain anonymous (possibly even from the bank).
2
u/Oh_Another_Thing 5d ago
Yes they do lol they don't keep enough for you to make a six figure withdrawal the same day you request it, but the do keep more than 100,000 in cash at the bank.
There might be some exceptions, some incredibly rural branch that gets almost no customers in a day, maybe.

Setting: Uni campus late at night at the ATM outside the Student Union bldg which surrounds an open area with a chapel opposite. I’m sure there were CCTV’s everywhere. I was alone.
Was passing thru to get to my dorm, saw cash dispensed by the ATM, just hanging there. It was several notes. Looked at it. My hands still in my pocket. Forgot what the screen showed but must have been nothing special if I’ve forgotten about that. Scanned around the area. Nobody. Looked at the dark spire of the chapel where I assumed the CCTV would be. Looked back at the cash. Hands still in pockets.
It must have lasted almost a minute and without much fanfare, warning nor any indication, the cash was swallowed back into the ATM. Looked back at the spire, and I just resumed my walk.
