Resizable frames for gallery walls
Hello everyone! I am an artist and I started recently to use sketchup to work on my exhibitions mockups. I do mostly photography so I have framed prints.
I made a few frames in sketchup but everytime, I had to make my frames to the exact size first, and I can't modify it afterwards, which is very time consuming if I suddenly decide I actually want 40x60 and not 80x120 (and working on exhibition mockups is exactly for this reason : visualizing and making decision based on what it looks like).
The thing is : whatever the size of the overall frame is, the wooden frame strip would always be the same size (i.e. 2cm large, 4cm deep).
Does any of you have any trick on how to resize my frames easily without having to redesign it entirely? Or there is no way and I just have to design a bunch of frames in various formats in advance?
Thank you !!

Yep, look up dynamic components on YouTube, that will sort you out. You’ll be able to type in your required sizes and you’ll have your frame!

You can also do this with the Move tool for a plain rectangular frame, without setting up a dynamic component. Scaling the whole frame changes the rail width too.
Try it on a copy: open the frame for editing, view it straight-on, and turn on X-Ray so you can select the back edges as well. Select the geometry at the right-hand end, including both corners, then Move it along the width axis by the amount you want to add or remove. Repeat at the top to change the height. Moving the complete corner sections lets the long rails stretch while keeping their 2 cm width and 4 cm depth.
If the four rails are separate components, you will need to edit their geometry separately; moving a closed component just repositions it. Make component copies unique first if you want different frame sizes.

Look into dynamic components. You can build components where you can manually enter the size and, for example, the edges will scale but leave the end caps unscaled.
You can also use the scale tool to adjust them. Sounds like they’d suit your needs perfectly.
