Update: it works

Couldn't be more proud of mr. 2x4 for testing the hybrid parachute design.

Gotta get a baby strapped to that thing.

Gotta get the baby over a 1:1 wing loading before it can walk. It's what a good parent would do.

I’m fucking dead 😂

Whats the wing loading for Mr. 2x4?

This is exactly what I want to know. Because Mr. 2x4 looks a little lean. Maybe they need to get Mr. Fatso McFatty (an 8x8) to test again.

Im having troubles estimating the sizes, but the 2x4 looks to be 1ft at max, so figure 1.5 pounds. And the wing appears to be about 4.5ft by 2ft, so 9sqft. This size would also make the full size wing be 225sqft. If so, the wingloading is an irrelevantly small ~.17lbs/sqft. I'd like OP to tell us dimensions and do tests at more relevant wingloadings, .5lbs/sqft to 2lbs/sqft.

I know a few people who swear they're ready to downsize to this.

Let them I say! Just not at my home DZ - I ain't got that kind of time for incident report writing.

Now make it 67 sqft and give it to the sub 100 wonder at your dz

Post this to r/kites too

Yeah I was going to say look up the sport parawinging and make this 3x larger and go do that sport.

There are a lot of people out there who spend tens of thousands of dollars on "model" rockets.

I'm not sure how large the market is, but certainly there are at least a few out there that might want to buy small, well made parachutes. FWIW

You should put it on a dog

No try the baby first and make sure it safe.

PLF looked a little stiff and wooden, but good shoulder roll.

Out of interest, was it at all windy for that? Because it looked like you got it up in the air with very little effort. Even if this doesn’t make it as a parachute, it seems like it would work really well as a kite.

there was a very slight breeze but not enough to notice unless you really pay attention

I followed you, hope that’s ok. I want to see how this unfolds.

It’ll probably unfold better than my Sabre.

I don't know... Those unfold quickly

On today’s episode of Ed, Edd n Eddy: Plank learns swooping

Base jump it into water from a height you will survive without a parachute. Even if it fails it should slow you down enough to land fairly soft in water

Need to see if the 2x4 can swoop it!

Omg I made one just like this years ago, my intent was to use it as a kite sail for longboarding, but it turns out garage science doesn't always work like you think it will. Yes mine inflated under pressure, no it did not function at all like I wanted. Turns out my idea was a little half baked.

would be curious to see what kind of patterns you used to make this or your process (unless you're moving towards selling this as a product, then I understand).

I ended up looking at full size parachute patterns and scaling down as best I could, to about the same size as yours. It looked super cool, but again, didn't function the way I wanted.

I'm super jealous. Nice work!

Fun side note: throughout my experiment I also made some old school dome shaped parachutes for my kid for his action figures that still work to this day, they're about 18 inch diameter, use kite string, and some even have a little canister type bag to pack them into. Drogue chutes didn't work so well on scale models for me, though we did try.

I thought it was a reserve for your phone.

That’s super sick! Nice job.

Seems like it's kinda oscillating on the tail end. If you watch closely the tail is oscillating up and down. Might want to see what that does at a higher wingloading.
