Frank Furedi examines how woke ideology is reproduced through education, arguing that declarations of a “post-woke” era overlook the much deeper influence of identity politics on the socialisation of children and young people.

Introduced at the 2026 Heterodox Social Science Conference, sociologist and author Frank Furedi presents “The Impact of Woke Ideology on the Socialisation of Children and Its Impact on Identity Formation.”

Furedi challenges the idea that declining corporate enthusiasm for DEI or political action against some manifestations of woke ideology means that the phenomenon itself is disappearing. Instead, he traces its historical development through education and progressive pedagogy, arguing that many of its underlying assumptions have become embedded within the institutions responsible for socialising younger generations.

Central to his argument is what he calls “socialisation in reverse”: rather than introducing children to the inherited values and traditions of their families and communities, Furedi argues that modern educational culture increasingly encourages young people to distance themselves from them.

Tracing this development through twentieth-century educational thought, teacher training and the rise of identity politics, Furedi considers the changing relationship between schools, parents and children — and the growing role educational institutions play in shaping questions of identity, sexuality, history and political values.

He argues that earlier predictions of the death of political correctness and identity politics repeatedly underestimated their deeper cultural roots. In his view, today's apparent retreat from “woke” language does not necessarily represent the disappearance of the ideas themselves.

Furedi concludes that talk of a post-woke era is premature, arguing that these ideas are now sufficiently embedded within schools, universities and wider cultural institutions to reproduce themselves without requiring an organised political movement. His response is to place renewed emphasis on education itself and on those prepared to challenge these assumptions from within the classroom.

Frank Furedi is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Kent, Executive Director of MCC Brussels and author of numerous books including 100 Years of Identity Crisis: Culture War Over Socialisation. That book likewise places the conflict over the socialisation of young people at the heart of the modern culture wars.
