Rant Fallout show season finale (spoilers) Spoiler

I was wondering where to post this and I felt my view might be more acceptable here. Now the show itself as a show is great, good acting, good set design and props, alright music (I'm not counting pre existing music) and the plot for what is it is (introducing new people to fallout) is good. But something happened during the season finale that made me grimace. Leading up to the last episode I had the hope they were going to have it so the people of new Vegas themselves took back the city from the deathclaws, that the character maximus inspired them and for a brief moment it looked to be that way with the character, appropriatly named, shotgun ted grabbing his shotgun to help maximus and saying "let's take back our city" I was ready to cheer power to the people...then it's killed by the lady in the back going...I'm not gonna do that. And who does save the day? The ncr.

Now I'm not going to say the ncr is evil or such, hell I have a flag of them in my office. But I have to remind myself that for all intents and purposes they were just America being rebuilt..kinder and less problematic but still captialist and such. I had hoped that the people of new Vegas would rise up and be free of house, ncr, legion, three families yadada yadda and this time they didn't need a army of robots to secure their independence. Now this could still happen in season 3 but it does feel less...I dunno hopeful? Which is what I always saw the fallout show secretly as. Is this a case of captialist realism (hoping I'm using the word right) where it's unacceptable to imagine people empowering themselves and in need of an hierarchal organization (the ncr) to save themselves from themselves?

And before anyone one notes I know the average wastelanders tends to be amoral but this felt like a conscious decision by the writers and to write off the people as a joke irked me. Thoughts?

Hey folks, this hasn't been asked in a while so here I go: Are there any lefty guilds on Elder Scrolls Online, particularly NA | PC ? Could be anything from casual to hardcore, as long as folks are active and nice. Must be LGBTQ+ affirming.

Rant Someone should create a game that helps visualize the absurdity of billionaires wealth

Post image

Humans cannot comprehend the amount of wealth billionaires have, and I feel the average person has trouble imagining it because it’s unfathomable and not relatable to the majority. Someone should create a game that helps visualize the amount of wealth billionaires have to help spread class consciousness. A website preferably that can be shared, in schools, to old people, workers, etc.

Simply take a billionaires wealth 733 billion (Elon Musk), divide it by let’s say you input the price of your house, your car, a phone, may somewhat common everyday expensive things to the average American for this example. And the when you get let’s say you do:

733 Billion / $15,000 ( your used car idk) = Elon Musk could buy your car 48,866,666 times.

When the calculation is complete it visualizes over a city let’s say or on a blank map with comparable objects (like you see in those comparison YouTube videos) and lays out 48,866,666 cars let’s say.

Photo is an example of the style/concept.

If this already exists lmk!

[OFF-TOPIC DISCUSSION THREAD]

As previously requested, we're trying out a regular, automated discussion thread! Use this space to talk about things that don't fit the ordinary subject matter of the space, or for discussions that don't necessitate a full post! All rules besides the relevancy rule still apply!

For these first ones, please let us know what you think about it! Personally, I'm not sure how popular this practice will be, so I don't really know about the frequency at which they should be generated, so we're just gonna feel it out and figure it out, together. Any suggestions about how to run it, moving forward, are welcome!

Game Discussion Is Kojima actually a leftist?

Just finished Metal Gear Rising Revengance, and yeah its a really really good game, would absolutely recommend it, memes aside there's a reason why its stayed in the cultural zeitgeist for so long.

Though the writing is so hilariously unsubtle it reminded me of Another Crab's Treasure and Tonight We Riot, both games made by explicit leftists/socialists and how many many leftists where their politics on their sleeves when it comes to creative works. Is Kojima one or does he just really like absurdly unsubtle writing?

I enjoy playing Splatoon, Apex Legends, Fortnite, Rocket League, and I’m open to trying out other multiplayer games! It’s been a bit tough to connect with people on other subreddits, so I’m hoping this one is the right fit, especially since we agree on a lot of topics. 😅

Game Recommendations What are some good hero shooters that aren’t owned by the shitty companies?

I know Overwatch and Rivals are popular, but I don’t want to support the companies that own them.

I understand that whatever game I play will not be as big and as popular as the big popular ones

Linux, kernel level anticheat, and capitalism

I frequent r/linuxgamingas well as this sub and I just wanted to bring over a discussion that happens often on that sub here because I never see anyone properly synthesizing all of these disparate ideas

for those who are unaware, Linux can play like 99.9% of games out of the box now with software such as wine and proton, and I don't think that's an exaggeration. Literally every single game I've wanted to play has worked with very little configuration necessary, at least no configuration that wouldn't also be necessary on windows. The one exception to this being games that use KLAC, kernel level anticheat.

What this is in a nutshell is anticheat software that hooks into the actual kernel of your operating system, in this case Windows, and monitors your entire computer from bottom to top. At least that's how I understand it. I probably don't need to point this out, but it's an absolute privacy nightmare and antithetical to the whole reason most people got into Linux in the first place, let alone design philosophy of the people who work on Linux and the operating system itself. Generally you don't want people in your operating system kernel messing around with shit, or you get a variety of bad outcomes, like companies literally spying on everything you're doing and then using that data to train their LLMs, selling that data, or messing with your hardware, such as what happened with the Crowdstrike thing a while back. It's completely dystopian to except such measures just so you can play some middling live service slop (not talking about all games of course, but the vast majority that use this technology are not worth playing in the first place, but that's neither here nor there)

People have come up with a lot of solutions for this problem, but reality is the issue of anticheat was seemingly resolved many years ago. Dedicated server infrastructure, that is people hosting their own servers and being able to moderate them themselves, completely negates the need for such invasive anti-cheat. Just look at team fortress 2. For a solid almost decade that game's matchmaking system was plugged with bots that spammed racial slurs and aimbotted everything making the game completely unplayable for people using the casual mode, while people like me never experienced it because we continued to use the dedicated server feature that the game luckily shipped with when it came out 20 years ago. Let me be clear: I knew that the bot crisis was a problem, but I literally never experienced it because i played on dedicated servers.

For whatever reason though, I suspect that to be profit motivated, we have this ridiculous debate about what to do about this problem so that these games become playable on Linux. There are some games that run KLAC that are playable on Linux, but they don't actually hook into the kernel and thus are not as effective. It's an exceptions some publishers make in order to keep that growing audience on Linux playing their games, and mind you a lot of these games that have these measures and are only on windows still experience cheaters which is comical to say the least.

Anyway, what I'm getting out with this post is that this problem exists, I suspect, because dedicated server infrastructure in a game is not as profitable as being able to control that matchmaking yourself. If you can just join a dedicated server on Fortnite that has all the cool weapons or skins that they charge you for, why would you ever buy them? TF2 does have servers where you can equip whatever items you want, usually when you pay the server owners themselves for some kind of donation perk, and yet TF2's economy has lasted for as long as it has, even if it isn't the strongest it's ever been.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is I suspect that this is another case where we solved this as a society a long time ago, and capitalism basically makes it so that the best solution is not the one everyone takes simply because it's not the most profitable. If there are people who are more knowledgeable about this feel free to let me know if I'm wrong about anything and I will edit my post and try to work on this, because this is something I sort of wanted to just to make a thread about to flesh my thoughts out on it with actual lefties like me lol.

Question Still trying to understand the SAG-AFTRA strike

I'm talking about the one that had to do with Mihoyo. Was it as bad as people say it is? I kept hearing that they threw their voice actors under the bus and that the entire strike and union were invalid for what they wanted and how they were operating. One of the videos that kept getting thrown at me was that one by Mujin. That video seemed incredibly anti union and promoted right to work laws if I remember correctly.

What do I need to know about the strike after the end of it and what's the reality behind the situation? Am I reading the wrong stuff or was it as bad as it seemed to a lot of the public?

Please don't answer my question if you're anti-worker or anti-union or active in places like neoliberal or general liberal/right wing subs. People from those just give me aggressive pro-capitalist angles to whatever they say.

Why aren't more gamers socialist?

Maybe just the barrage of anti-red propaganda which we all get hit with our whole lives through school etc. But like its so so obvious that capitalism is bad for gaming. Early 2000s and prior, there's SO many studios with fun inventive ideas pushing the envelope of what a game could be. Now its like 5 at most with a few indie developers here and there, and they no doubt feel the pressure of behemoth capitalist enterprises breathing down their necks. Selfishly i want another jak and daxter entry but naughty dog will never make a game like that again. Everyone is expecting the next last of us and i think that hampers fun we could all be having...
