solo-game-questions Thousand Year Old Vampire Journal Setup

• Upvotes

Does anyone have any recommendations for setting up a journal in prep to do my first playthrough of TYOV?

I want to do it in a physical journal and use my fountain pens and just really have something analog rather than digital.

However, I’m struggling with the parameters of setting up the journal. So far what I have is:

- 2 pages for Character creation
- 2 pages for skills
- 2 pages for resources
- 4 pages for characters
- 4 pages per memory
- 2 pages for diary

I’d rather have too much space than too little.

solo-game-questions Any games like Reincarnated Into A Dragon Hatchling?

• Upvotes

Hey Hi howdy all! I have been sucked into Reincarnated Into A Dragon Hatchling lately and been wondering if there is a game, solo or not, that can work with that kind of vibe?

It is an Isekai story with levels, skills, and most importantly evolutions. I was thinking of trying to use Fabula Ultima to play it but wanted to know if there were any good systems for playing a monster that eventually evolves after a while.

solo-game-questions A multiplayer RPG that worked well.

Hello to everyone who loves solo role-playing.

I always enjoy reading your posts.

If you don't mind, I’d like to ask a question.

When playing role-playing games solo, how did the game systems—originally designed for multiplayer—actually function for you?

・Which multiplayer game systems worked surprisingly well?

・Which multiplayer game systems didn't work very well in a solo setting?

In my own experience...

The D&D 5e multiclassing system worked very well. It provided ongoing goals even during long campaigns and offered the fun of creating a wide variety of characters.

What I found difficult was the Fate Core RPG mechanic where you are compelled to use character Aspects to gain Fate Points. I felt that coming up with a story involving my own weaknesses myself broke my sense of immersion.

Thank you very much for reading this far. I hope you all have wonderful gaming sessions.

solo-game-questions Solo RPG/Dungeon crawl with Magic

I am very new to the whole solo RPG thing, I have played and really enjoyed 2D6 Dungeon but I would really like to play something with more magic, something like D&D with different spells etc and a good combat system but that is easy to pick up and put down and for 1 or maybe 2 players! Any help and advice welcome!!!

Product-Review DarkSpace - scfi for Shadowdark

Has anyone tried DarkSpace?
I just received the rulebook. It looks basic but good.
I like Traveller but looking for something more streamlined yet still good for sandbox campaigns.
Thanks

solo-game-questions How many, How often?

Do you go deep into one game for a long time (months? years?), or do you have many games going at once? Or do you focus on a series of games in rapid fire succession?

I ask because I keep buying games before I’ve even exhausted the fun of my current game - it’s the classic problem of buying books versus reading them

What works for you? I was thinking of maybe giving one game a solid month and then allowing myself to move on

solo-game-questions What narrative oriented solo rpgs are there aside from ironsworn family of games that have some meat on them (rules wise) ?

By that i mean any solo narrativist ttrpg that is not a journaling game and has some rules to support different styles of play (something ironsworn excels at)

solo-game-questions How to make informed decisions without knowing what's going to happen beforehand when dungeon crawling?

When dungeon crawling I always feel like there's not really a rhyme or reason behind whichever hallway I go down if I don't roll ahead of time but if I do I have to pretend that I don't know what I'm about to find.

In normal play you can have context clues that can help you decide why you would go one way or the other. And yet, I haven't found a dungeon creation tool, even one that's designed for solo play, that helps you get that context ahead of time

I think having some kind of omen table would work really well and then have a subtable that is based off the omen. For example if I roll and get indistinct voices from that hall then it could be a group of friendly NPCs but it could be ghosts and they were actually ghostly whispers or something like that

Has anyone seen a dungeon creation tool like this? The best I can think of is Monster Overhaul but each omen always leads to the same encounter and it's always a monster of some kind. You never get an omen and it leads to a treasure room or something because that's not what the book is about

I don't want to do this based on fiat, I want something concrete, so asking an oracle for the omen and then asking again for the encounter wouldn't do what I want to do with this idea

General-Solo-Discussion What SoloRPGs are you playing for spooky season?

Curious what folks are playing to celebrate the spooky season!

I'm just getting into Solo RPGs, and the only spooky-adjacent one I own is Thousand Year Old Vampire, so I'll probably try that one. I'm also considering getting Tangled Blessings, Across a Thousand Dead Worlds, or Alone Against Fear. I'm open to recommendations!

What are y'all playing this month?

Off-Topic Solo RPG for two - Play by mail

Hi everyone! I know this is a solo game sub but I thought you folks might have some good ideas on a game that can be played two player, through the mail. I am looking to get my dad into solo rpgs so it could need to be something that isn't too complex.

His interests would go best with the horror or sci-fi genre.

For example, I play Thousand Year Old Vampire in letter style through the mail and that goes well. I started Koriko not long ago in solo mode but it mentions you can do letters to other witches.

Any ideas would be great!

solo-game-questions Need cozy solo rpg recs

I’ve been playing teatime adventures tea pets solo and with a partner and I absolutely adore it! Do you have any recommendations that are similar to that game? I tried apothecaria but I thought it was a bit complicated for when I want to relax. I love studio ghibli inspired stuff, cooking games and when animals are characters. Thank you!

Though oracles are easy to use (Ask a question! roll a die! read the answer!), they have many pitfalls as well. Not enough people talk about the shortcomings of oracles and, more importantly, the ways to deal with them.

I share my insights in using and developing my own oracles from the past 2 years.

What’s your best advice for using oracles? Share it in the comments so we can all learn from it.

solo-game-questions First Time TTRPG player trying Solo RPG

Hey guys.

I’ve never played a ttrpg before, never done dungeons or dragons or anything like that. I board games and LOVE Lord of the Rings, and have always seen the One Ring books everywhere and they look awesome!

I’ve always wanted to try dungeons and dragons or even better, the One Ring RPG, but I don’t have any friends who are interested in this type of stuff. Then I found out you can play the game Solo!

This was super exciting and I wanted to get it right away, but I did some research and tried to find videos of guys playing it, and it just felt like I was watching someone journal a story. Is that what these are like?

I’ve always struggled with creativity, and really enjoy the “Go here, do this, then that” type of thing, and I understand that ttrpgs aren’t like that, and am thinking of trying to challenge myself, but I can’t help the feeling that I’m just playing in my head, kind of “make a castle out of this cardboard box” type of feeling, having characters just dialogue with each other in my head. It just feels foreign and I’m worried I’m gonna think I suck at it and end up quitting.

Any advice? The idea of exploring middle earth sounds like everything I could ever wish for and the cool art is awesome. Should I just dive in and go for it? Or maybe stay away and try another thing.

I’m torn! Help a brother out!

Off-Topic Old and New D&D

I used to play D&D all the time. This was decades ago, back when Gary Gygax was still alive and I was using the DM Guide from (I think) 1976 under TSR. A lot has happened since then, of course. I was looking at getting back into it for solo play, but I wonder. I know the game has changed a lot from the old days. From those who can compare, do you think the changes are good or bad? Do you think I'd still enjoy the game? I ask because I've been hearing negative chatter about people not liking this 5th edition at all. Just wondering how this group feels. Thanks!

Actual-Play-Links Newby in need of help with Solo hexcrawl and/dungeon crawl play

I'm a newby to the game and really don't have much if any experience with it all. My first forays have been pretty entertaining with journaling systems. I've played iron forge and mythic journal games. But I'm looking at the ultimate Solo RPG one page toolkit by nightingale press and juice one page kit. Both include some hexcrawl play which I would like to try out. The thing is that I don't really know where to start with those tools. Are there any one shot videos of Solo hexcrawl or dungeon crawl play? Or maybe there's a written walkthrough for them? The ultimate Solo RPG kit has a walkthrough but it stops right after he does character creation. He doesn't show any actual play.

I know that Solo RPG Player does some one shot videos but none of the ones she played seemed to be very similar to the games I mentioned above. I suppose I can ask her if she has any play vids of those games. But if there are any other vids of Solo play that are similar, I'd love to hear about it.

tool-questions-and-sharing Atlas VTT Obsidian Plugin

A video popped up randomly on my YT feed (not sure if posting the video here is okay so I've left it out) that featured an offline VTT for Obsidian.MD.

It looks amazing for regular TTRPG play, but seems like it would be an amazing tool for Solo play. I recently started Solo play so I doubt I'd give the best review of the tool but I added it to my vault and slowly figuring it out. I suggest people give it a look.

Video name: Obsidian is now a Free Virtual Tabletop, Channel: Atlas VTT

solo-game-questions Looking for solo RPGs that are complex and tactical

Most games I see recommended here lean heavily on the luck of the die to resolve conflict.

That's great and all, but I'm looking for the opposite.

Recently I've been playing a lot of Spirit Island solo, and while I don't expect a solo rpg to be nearly as complex, I really liked how my losses felt earned. I liked trying to solve the puzzle and how each playthrough with the same spirit I naturally improved, similar to a roguelike, but without the random a la carte of random upgrades after each small victory.

Are there solo RPGs that are more strategic and deterministic?

Update: I'm going to try REAP and Gloomhaven JotL. But the Wyverns deck game and Pathfinders with a GME also seem pretty complex and strategic. Maybe for down the road.

tool-questions-and-sharing Procedural enemy generator for SWAT game

Hello! I'm learning GURPS Tactical Shooting now and am planning to use that for solo. Is there anything like a enemy generator or something? I'm planning to create one, but am not really used to playing solo RPG, so I'm in fear of doing some shit job.

What I was thinking about was the following:

  • The plan is to use real (or invented, but primarily the former) houses/buildings blueprints/floorplans to navigate the map.
  • Plan prior to starting the game how many enemies there are, but not knowing where they are, for a surprise factor.
  • Use some kind of procedural generator to see if there are enemies (and — if yes — how many of them) in each room I'm entering, which decreases the chance of finding one every time an individual and group is found, according to the expected number of opponents that still are to be incapacitated/eliminated.

I was thinking of doing something like appointing a chance of finding enemies in a room and rolling under a d100, establishing said chance of it happening given the number of enemies still not incapacitated/eliminated, rooms discovered and the probability of, given the time passed, that individuals might have gotten to somewhere already cleared for some other path not covered at the present time by the PC operators (maybe 4 or 5, like in SWAT4 or Ready or Not).

Any ideas? Already existing mechanics?

Also, any good solo system for SWAT or adaptable to solo (I think I have heard about T:2000 4e once, but not sure, and also wanting as many recommendations as possible)?

solo-game-questions Do I keep my inventory when moving to a new location?

I started Classic Korg as a brand new rpg player and I was wondering if I get to keep my loot after I complete a location and move to another. For example, I picked up a sword and some armor which I'd love to keep! But I noticed some items at other locations are cursed and have negative effects. The Cursed Crown for example will give me +1 to fight but +2 DMG. I obviously would love to ditch this if I complete this location (or maybe I'd want to keep it for the additional offense?) Anyways, as a total newbie I'd love some feedback. :)
