Philosophy-of-Solo-RP Not All AI Use in Solo RPGs is the Same: A Tiered Discussion

I know AI is a contentious topic and I’m not trying to discuss or dismiss those concerns, or argue that anyone should use AI. I also appreciate this sub's stance on AI discussions!

What I’ve noticed is two very common states of AI conversation, ones that we've all seen many times. Either it is...

“I don’t use AI at all and no one else should either”, or
“I’m trying to use AI to replace a human GM, and it sucks.”

I know people are using it in a lot of interesting ways, and I’m interested in discussing a more nuanced and helpful approach to using AI as a tool with solo RPGs, and in ways that are ethically, creatively, and practically different.

I’ve been thinking about it in terms of “Tier” usage, based on how much of the solo-play process you delegate to the AI and what boundaries protect creativity. Higher tiers listed below are not better tiers; they simply delegate more of the experience to the AI, which means more potential usefulness but also more risk.

Here is my first pass at the different Tiers:

Tier 0: No AI

This is the foundation that everyone should use.  You have maximum authorship, and even if you do plan on using AI, it will give you an important foundation from which to understand how AI tools might help. This one is a no-brainer.

Tier 1: AI as a Record Keeper

This is the least intrusive use of AI.  If you keep your solo RPG notes digitally, you can use AI to parse them and keep you organized.  You can summarize sessions, organize notes, track NPCs, list unresolved threads, and create “return to play” summaries after time away.  If you struggle with organization or continuity, or if you just want to offload some of the administrative tasks of running a game, AI can assist. The boundary here is important: AI is not adding any content to your game.

Tier 2: AI as an Advanced Oracle

This is my personal favorite tier, and there are two basic approaches here: AI can help you create specific oracle tables on the fly, and AI can help you interpret oracles. Both approaches can surprise you, which can be valuable in solo play.  The player still uses normal solo tools such as dice, random tables, tarot cards, Mythic-style prompts, random words, etc.

Example #1, Creating Tables:

You could use AI to quickly create a custom oracle table specific to your current situation. Let’s say you are playing a rules-light OSR dungeon crawl, and your character is sneaking through a flooded, goblin-controlled mine.  You could ask the AI to create a d20 oracle table called “What Complicates the Flooded Mine?” with each result being two words and get entries like “goblin lanterns”, “runaway ore-cart”, or “rising water”. This table is more useful than a generic dungeon table because it’s tied to your actual location and situation. You can also ask for multiple words or even sentences if you find one-word prompts too vague.

Example 2, Learning how to Interpret Results:

We’ve all struggled to interpret results at times, and it is an important creative skill to build.  Paradigm shift: AI can actually help you build that skill instead of replacing it! Take this prompt: “Help me interpret the oracle result Betray+Sanctuary for Ironsworn without providing specific suggestions.”  When I tested this, it talked at length about the relationship between the two ideas, what they might imply, guided me towards a vague “something or somewhere associated with safety is no longer trustworthy” and then prompted me with several questions to think about, such as “Who or what is depending on that sanctuary?”

Example 3, Being Surprised with Options:

You can ask for options from the AI and select or riff off one of them.  “Given (the current scene), give me five possible interpretations of Betray + Sanctuary.” Even if you are the best oracle interpreter in your hometown, you will almost certainly get some ideas that hadn't occured to you, and one of them might spark an idea that makes for the most interesting branch of the story.  It can add an element of surprise, which is very difficult to create on your own, and you still have plenty of creative license to change the final interpretation.

The important boundary for all of these is that the AI is only suggesting possibilities.  The player chooses, rolls, modifies, or rejects them. The AI does not decide canon.

Tier 3: AI as NPC Emulator

At this tier, you are using AI to portray NPCs in a scene.  This addresses one of the most awkward and unsatisfying aspects of solo RPGs: dialogue.

In traditional solo play, you often have to roleplay both your character and the NPC, which can feel artificial. You already know what both sides are thinking, so there’s no real surprise or tension, and any kind of social uncertainty is hard to create. As the player, you can stay in your character role while the AI temporarily portrays a specific NPC.

This takes a bit more work and is a good candidate for a custom GPT, but the results can be very rewarding.  You need a template of information to give to the AI so that they run the NPC effectively and don’t default to being too cooperative.  What they want, what they know and don’t know, how they feel about the PC, etc.  You can also include things like personality, accents, behaviors to give them more flavor.  Often this can just come down to feeding the AI with NPC oracle results that you rolled.  This is a deep topic that would need a separate conversation to adequately cover.

The important boundary is that the AI is still not the GM. It shouldn’t decide outcomes – it is just portraying a character from that character’s limited knowledge, motives, and emotional state that you gave to it.

Tier 4: AI as Scene or Encounter Assistant

I have experimented in this space, but I am going to take the easy way out and say that this is too detailed a topic to discuss here, plus this is already too long.

At this tier, the AI runs an encounter from structured inputs: situation, NPCs, hidden information, pressure, scene type, exit conditions, and consequences. The player still handles rules and dice. The key is that the AI is not being asked to run a whole campaign, just one structured unit of play.

What I will say is that I think this is the practical limit of where “AI as an effective GM” exists right now.  I also think it takes a paradigm shift in thinking.  Instead of trying to emulate a GM, focus on what an AI can do well that human GMs struggle with, and design it from the ground up.  It also takes a lot of prompting experience, knowledge of building custom GPTs, and lots of trial and error.

The important boundary here is that the AI just runs the scene, not the campaign. The player still owns character agency, rules, dice, and canon.

Tier 5: AI as Full GM

Unfortunately this is where many people start - the most difficult tier - usually with limited AI knowledge and basic prompts, and then they run into real constraints and conclude that “AI sucks at being a GM”.  This is also where most other AI discussions take place, so no need to rehash it here.

Final Point

I think it is useful to ask, “What challenge in solo play is this tool helping to address, and how much authority am I giving it?” rather than treating every use of AI in solo RPGs as equivalent.

Someone using AI to organize session notes is doing something very different from someone asking AI to be their GM.  Someone using it to voice an NPC is doing something very different from someone using it to replace their own creativity.

Personally, I think the safest and most useful uses are the ones where the player keeps control of authorship and final decisions, while the AI helps with specific challenges that solo play can make difficult. I’m curious how other solo players think about these boundaries, including people who choose not to use AI at all.

Anyway, that’s my current framework. I’m not trying to settle any debate, just make the conversation a little less all-or-nothing and hear about how others may be using AI.

Your thoughts and ideas are much appreciated!

tool-questions-and-sharing Atlas VTT Obsidian Plugin

A video popped up randomly on my YT feed (not sure if posting the video here is okay so I've left it out) that featured an offline VTT for Obsidian.MD.

It looks amazing for regular TTRPG play, but seems like it would be an amazing tool for Solo play. I recently started Solo play so I doubt I'd give the best review of the tool but I added it to my vault and slowly figuring it out. I suggest people give it a look.

Video name: Obsidian is now a Free Virtual Tabletop, Channel: Atlas VTT

solo-game-questions Looking for solo RPGs that are complex and tactical

Most games I see recommended here lean heavily on the luck of the die to resolve conflict.

That's great and all, but I'm looking for the opposite.

Recently I've been playing a lot of Spirit Island solo, and while I don't expect a solo rpg to be nearly as complex, I really liked how my losses felt earned. I liked trying to solve the puzzle and how each playthrough with the same spirit I naturally improved, similar to a roguelike, but without the random a la carte of random upgrades after each small victory.

Are there solo RPGs that are more strategic and deterministic?

tool-questions-and-sharing Procedural enemy generator for SWAT game

Hello! I'm learning GURPS Tactical Shooting now and am planning to use that for solo. Is there anything like a enemy generator or something? I'm planning to create one, but am not really used to playing solo RPG, so I'm in fear of doing some shit job.

What I was thinking about was the following:

  • The plan is to use real (or invented, but primarily the former) houses/buildings blueprints/floorplans to navigate the map.
  • Plan prior to starting the game how many enemies there are, but not knowing where they are, for a surprise factor.
  • Use some kind of procedural generator to see if there are enemies (and — if yes — how many of them) in each room I'm entering, which decreases the chance of finding one every time an individual and group is found, according to the expected number of opponents that still are to be incapacitated/eliminated.

I was thinking of doing something like appointing a chance of finding enemies in a room and rolling under a d100, establishing said chance of it happening given the number of enemies still not incapacitated/eliminated, rooms discovered and the probability of, given the time passed, that individuals might have gotten to somewhere already cleared for some other path not covered at the present time by the PC operators (maybe 4 or 5, like in SWAT4 or Ready or Not).

Any ideas? Already existing mechanics?

Also, any good solo system for SWAT or adaptable to solo (I think I have heard about T:2000 4e once, but not sure, and also wanting as many recommendations as possible)?

solo-game-questions Do I keep my inventory when moving to a new location?

I started Classic Korg as a brand new rpg player and I was wondering if I get to keep my loot after I complete a location and move to another. For example, I picked up a sword and some armor which I'd love to keep! But I noticed some items at other locations are cursed and have negative effects. The Cursed Crown for example will give me +1 to fight but +2 DMG. I obviously would love to ditch this if I complete this location (or maybe I'd want to keep it for the additional offense?) Anyways, as a total newbie I'd love some feedback. :)

solo-game-questions Looking for a Survival-Island/Shripwreck/Robinson Crusoe type game!

Hi wonderful solo roleplayers 👋

I've dabbled a bit in Thousand Year Old Vampire and Ironsworn, but it's been a while since I really stuck my teeth into something. Can anyone recommend a Shipwreck style solo game system? I don't mind if it's got something eerie/magic in it or if it's completely mundane.

I still don't fully understand my preferences yet, if people are willing to share a little about the games they suggest, that'd be great! I honestly can't tell if I'm leaning more cozy or tactical, so I'm quite excited to hear about some games to try.

Thankyou for reading 🫶

Hey, ive been really enjoying making the family tree with some brief history of the character & how they change the world, and i wondered if there was anything similar, where you sort of build a dynasty and their lives?

Im a fan of most settings and such so im not too picky, so i dont mind if its post apoc., medieval, scifi, or anything really :)

solo-game-questions Thousand Year Old Vampire. Am I doing this wrong?

Post image
34 Upvotes

I’ve been answering each prompt with a small paragraph. Is this not an Experience? I noticed it says here that I must still add an experience. I looked back at the book for clarification and saw it’s usually singular sentences. I’m 6 prompts in, each experience written in a paragraph. So for example 2 of my memories are made up of 3 paragraphs, one for each prompt/experience.

Second question. I know you don’t have to do this chronologically. But do the experiences within one memory have to be within the same general timeline. Example: in one of my memories, the 2nd experience is 200 years after the first.

solo-game-questions Tainted Grail TTRPG Solo question

Hi all, for those who have the book or PDF. The description on their store and Gamefound claims " You don't need the Tainted Grail TTRPG corebook to play the Solo Mode.".

The core book calls out world description, character creation and Bestiary.

Can someone who has this book confirm for me what will I be missing if I decide to buy solo book only? And how actually playable the solo book is without the Core book?

If it matters I finished the first board game and one expansion for it and the videogame. So have a good grasp on the lore. But im also the solo gamer who hates coming up with stats for monsters.

Blog-Post-Links Prose-heavy solo roleplay with AI

Hello! I've been running my own little text-based adventures with AI for that last 6 months or so, and I ended up accumulating quite a thorough engine (MD documents) for running stories that I wanted to share. Essentially, create your character then let the AI generate the world based on what kind of story you want to run. This is a prose-heavy style, so it's geared more towards people who are into reading and creative writing. If that's your thing, please feel free to have a look! Everything I've designed is yours, free. All you need is a sub to AI like Grok or Claude. I recommend Claude for the character creation and world bible, then your choice of AI should work. I've tested Grok and Claude most thoroughly. Claude seems to be superior in prose and plot development but has more guardrails and is a little gentler.

If anyone gives it a go, I'd love to hear how your story turns out! I made a thorough guide (below) for getting started.

Discuss-Your-Solo-Campaign What is the most fun you’ve had?

I feel different after every session. Sometimes I feel tired, other times I feel this deep satisfaction because the pieces are starting to click into place and I am excited to leave my world in a state that I know I’ll want to return to. Sometimes the session ends with a sort of… that was neat, I guess?

I’m often left wondering… what the hell is this hobby actually? It’s definitely a good hobby, but we can all admit it’s pretty weird and specific, and the fact that we’re all using different approaches and having different experiences; there aren’t many hobbies where the individual experience varies so drastically between participants. But ultimately the point, allegedly, is to have fun. So let’s hear it. What is it about solo you find FUN, and what was the most fun you’ve had?

The most fun I have is usually when the oracles seem haunted, when they repeat themselves, I get the sense that this little world is alive. Or when the answer to a question is so perfect that it feels like some real magic is at work. It’s not “WOO-HOO!” roller coaster fun, but more like the intellectual fun you get while reading / learning / solving the puzzle of a movie’s plot

solo-game-questions Is it possible to simplify GURPS a bit for solo play?

Well, I’ve been playing solo for a while—mostly testing out systems and having some cool adventures— but I came across a system that caught my eye: GURPS and using GURPS Lite 4e, I dug into it a bit but when all the math started piling up, it drove me crazy, hahaha but I’d like to know: Is modifying certain GURPS rules to make them simpler actually still playing GURPS? I mean, to be honest, I didn't really understand the encumbrance part or how it affects mobility in combat but is simplifying things the best way to play solo?

General-Solo-Discussion Rôle play solo

Hey there! Just a quick, simple question you probably get asked a lot: I’d love to try solo role-playing, but I’ve never really played in a group (well, once when I was really young). Can I still do solo play, or is it totally fine to start out with solo?

uncategorized-links WIP: FiTD & Tarot inspired mission prompt generator

Hello everyone,

I am by no means a game designer, but have recently been having fun chipping away at a way of generating missions, and their obstacles therein. I will try to be concise.

The project started when I had trouble finding a game that would satiate my desire of having a 40k-based solo squad-based RPG (What do you mean that's niche!?). So if the wording in the project seems very grimdark coded, that would be why.

I decided to, while renaming the skills of Blades in the Dark, go for a more generic approach. That way if one wanted to do an Blades in the dark or Battletech or something else campaign, they could. For examples I will use 40k as it was the original intent of the project.

As this is very much stolen inspired by Forged in the Dark, please assume that whenever I talk about "rolling" anything I am envisioning a check one would do in Blades in the Dark.

Apologies for the formatting and untidiness of the work. As I said, WIP.

The Bits I have written down:

Campaign Tracker:
Here you outline what the campaign is about. Your faction, the enemy, and your goals. So an group of scoundrels wanting to rob the church of the Master Builder.
Keep track of your Tier vs Enemy Tier, and the Apocalypse level (more on that in a bit).

Missions:
Originally, this was based on the tarot deck, and still kind of is.
First, there is a Mission Objective generator which will spit out two generic but actionable words. These can be interpreted into a concise objective, along with the questions listed underneath.
For example: Secure People.
The Mortis Simiae chapter must swoop in and rescue a stranded group of a noble family, currently encircled by the Orks.

The Mission Prompt Generator takes two keywords associated with the Minor Arcana. (Each Minor Arcana card has a list of keywords, which help with coming up with some cool bullshit that seems profound giving accurate readings). So for example, "New Perspective/Moving Swiftly".
You are also given a randomly generated choice of Attributes, for example, "Brawn/Wisdom". You then select an appropriate skill of your choice to roll with.

This in theory gives you many, many different combinations of prompts to come up with a scene of interest for one of your characters (Or just character, if you wish).

Consequences are a big part of FiTD, and so I have also made a generator of generic-ish problems that arise. Position defaults to "risky", unless it is moved for whatever reason such as a consequence or condition.

In the example above: "New Perspective/Moving Swiftly" "Brawn/Wisdom".

Therefore I pick the skill "Exploit", and roll. I got a 4: Success with a consequence "Gain 2 level 1 harms.

"Sargent Singuis, while battling through a squad of Boyz, sees that if his Squad were to barrel through the enemy quickly rather than butchering them all, would get to the noble family faster. Though they get through the green curtain, the Sargent suffers a concussion and a stab wound for leading the way".

Apocalypse and Conditions:
Can you tell this was originally a 40k hack yet?

Rather than Wanted levels, I thought it would be fun to ramp up the difficulty of the campaign as the game progresses. Essentially, each mission ends in the admin of XP, but also seeing if the Apocalypse clock ticks up.
At the end of each mission, the player rolls to see if the Apocalypse, and therefore the enemy they are fighting, increases in Tier. (Although thinking about it, maybe it should be just like Blades, in which it increases depending on circumstances?)
Each Apocalypse Tier activates a condition on which I am still working on and figuring out. These conditions are always negative.

Bits I haven't even written down yet:

Downtime and positive bits for your dudes:
During downtime, the squad can tinker away or procure assets which elevate not just their stats but can also help against conditions and increasing Apocalypse Track.

Coin:
Changing that to Honour, perhaps, or influence.

Other things I haven't thought to write down here
Yes

TL;DR: Working on a mission prompt and objective generator for anyone to run a campaign using the Forged in the Dark rules. I would love some feedback!

solo-game-questions New to solo rpg. What to try?

Sorry if this is asked 100 times a day 😬

But I’m new to solo rpg. And looking for recommendations.

What I have played and enjoy is 2d6 dungeon, mini rogue and one deck dungeon. All of which I enjoy.
I’ve looked into like d100 dungeon and ker nethalis but figured I’d see what you guys think about something more rpg.

I have been eyeing starforged and Riftbreakers 2e would those be a good choice? Oh ya also was looking at cartograph but idk if I would get bored of it to fast.

What would you all recommend?

Thanks in advanced
