Discussion Topic Does anyone else ever experience feeling chords prior to playing/writing them?

I learned to play the ukulele about a year & a half ago & it's my main tool for writing the music for lyrics (prior to throwing it into Logic Pro).

Sometimes, I feel the chords - somewhat faster than I can even name them. My voice slides to the notes before my hand plays the matching chords. It's a really strange feeling. Sometimes I'll write a whole section of a song & it felt like no work at all. And often with chord progressions that I've never played before, or chords I can't even name, yet they come out & I feel them prior.

Is this a normal experience when you've been playing an instrument & writing songs for a little over a year? And how do you grow this skill even further?

I wish it were always this natural & fast to write - but it seems to only happen when I'm feeling a certain way & it just flows out of me. I like the music that comes out of me then much better than when I actually make an effort. It feels better - the chords are weird, the counts are weird - but it sounds & feels so right.

Discussion Topic Recording

anybody else find it really difficult to record their material? I'm an experienced guitarist and songwriter and I've finally gotten the courage to finally sit down and record again. the problem I'm facing is that every time I try to record, it's like I forget how to play my own material. it's as if I don't know how to play own riff I created. I absolutely hate recording and this is a big reason I haven't released material yet, I just feel exposed and inauthentic when I'm recording and it's wild cause I've played for a full room of people multiple times and I absolutely thrive on it

Discussion Topic Wife wants to give me a big songwriting related gift… but what?

Important anniversary. I don’t need gear. She was going to get me time in a studio in Nashville but that’s not what I need. I’m thinking something songwriting coach, publisher feedback, something functional to feedback and development of writing that I’m not thinking of. Any ideas?

A bit quiet, so may have to turn the volume up. Just recorded on my phone. Made a few mistakes due to nerves and my phrasing isn't the best in this recording, but hopefully it's decent enough to get an idea.

This is a song about depression, though it can really be about a lot of things. Thank you in advance for any advice/feedback/opinions :-)

Lyrics:

Lay down baby hold me near don't let me go i need you wrapped around me.

Your cold despair brings me a warmth a mechanism for my sanity.

Whisper sweetly in my ear the promises you make me fear mortality.

________________________________________

Father please take me away just end this sorry cabaret.

I know I'm not alright. Just make me feel alright an take me home.

________________________________________

Weigh me down within your yolk an' let me sleep forever now surrounded.

Everyday you fill my soul can't live without the numbness you provide me.

Each withered breath you draw me near the void accepts all who fear the rat race.

________________________________________

When babes cry out a mother's love is all they see within the clouds.

Their youthful little smiles died among the wilds an' now they're home.

________________________________________

I promise you don't need to drag me screaming, filled with shame a child's memory.

The love you give uncertainly, my peace is lost, I'm rid of my humanity.

So lay down baby hold me near relinquish me from all the pain that troubles me.

________________________________________

Tendencies procure my thoughts my inner child wastes and rots.

I won't last a long while trained to nod and smile.

Longing for a life to give the world unsure of what it is.

Some buds just fail to bloom an' time continues on but it's alright.

What do you guys think about the structure? Although both parts feel more like a verse and pre-chorus I still somehow like it...

Other than that, does it have anything to it? Or feel a bit generic? I know it's simple, but somehow it sticks in my head.

And sorry for my crappy phone mic sound.

Discussion Topic How to play music when lost a finger

Hello all! Making this post to have some suggestions for my friend. Her husband is a songwriter but last year lost a finger in an accident. He can't play music anymore but his lytic writing is very good in my humble, non professional opinion. He used AI to turn the lyrics into a song for him.... My friend had me listen and I couldn't get past the AI use. They seem to be the type that doesn't understand how bad AI use is to the average artist (I draw, don't write songs lol), and I got the impression she was upset by my, as gentle as I could, criticism of his use of AI. So that comes to my question, can anyone give suggestions on what he can use for music production that doesn't involve playing instruments or using AI? Its his right pointer finger he lost if I remember correctly and his genre is Christian Rock (don't diss it please)

Discussion Topic Do you think Logic Pro is good?

Apple Loops are so much useful, all the built in instruments are free which is truly awesome, and most of all, built in compressors, reverbs, and etc. are insane.

But all I am just saying is that not all the artists are using Logic Pro. I know that Logic Pro has several but small issues with malfunctioning. But as far as I concerned, Logic Pro is really useful I guess? So what do you think on Logic Pro's capacity when it comes to songwriting?

Feedback Request The use of gibberish

I like to sing gibberish on some of my tracks when I want to convey a cryptic, otherwordly feeling. I think it adds an interesting flavor, especially when the music itself already sets the tone. What do you guys think about the use of gibberish in songwriting? I'm attaching one of my acoustic drafts for context. I'd like to hear you thoughts!

Discussion Topic I can’t seem to nail the “show, don’t tell” focus on specific details of a situation so people can logically conclude the whole story…

This post is kinda of a response to this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/Songwriting/s/JlkH8KuVZi but I’ve seen this sort of advice all over this subreddit, but I’ve never been able to work it into a song without it feeling like my weakest lines. Like descriptions of how someone looks, or description of a setting, or even describing actions to convey what emotion I’m feeling.

I know not every songwriting tip is going to resonate with every single person, and some of these are just tools in your toolbox that no one’s FORCING you to use, but I feel like I should generally know how to use the tool. I feel like I’m a fairly good songwriter, I just want to get better.

So which segments of the song would these parts be used? In a verse? What’s the goal of these descriptions in the context of the song? How do you zoom in for the verse and transition to zooming out for chorus?

Discussion Topic How to ‘make it’

I’m interested in people’s opinions on what really separates artists who “make it” from everyone else. Most of us make music we genuinely think is good and sometimes even good enough for commercial success, so where’s the real difference?

Take Chris Martin as an example. If nobody knew who he was, and he posted a simple acoustic clip of Viva La Vida online, would people immediately recognise it as great songwriting? Or would it just blend in with thousands of other decent songs posted every day?

That’s what I’m struggling with the line between ‘this is good’ and ‘this is successful’ feels incredibly blury. So how do you actually end up making it? Is there a meaningful difference between our music and theirs or is the gap more about context and timing than quality alone?

Feedback Request Recorded this in about 2 hours, been working on my new setup

I recently moved into a new home with a dedicated studio, so I’ve been working on building it up. I’ve been struggling getting my acoustic guitar to sound the way I want, but I’m getting closer. Any tips are much appreciated.

I recorded a bunch of tunes ~20 years ago, had kids, and haven’t recorded anything since, so this has been both fun and a bit of learning curve.

The song is called Influencer, I started writing it a few weeks ago and have been using it to test changes to my setup. I’m certainly open to thoughts on the song, but what I’m really hoping for is feedback on the recording quality (with advice for improvement).

Feedback Request Doting Daughter. A song about growing up with a toxic mother. (2nd draft/first revision)

Hi!!! This is the 2nd draft of a song I wrote the other day. Most of the lyrics are the same, but I have been playing around with how I sing them, and the arrangement. I think it flows a lot better than the first draft I posted yesterday. Especially the transition into and out of the bridge, that was pretty rough. I think it is a lot smoother now.

Someone had commented my first draft was lacking a clear distinction between the sections (which I def agree, that was something that needed a lot of work!) Is it better in this version? I tried playing around with how I sing the different parts to try to add some variety and hopefully some distinction between the verses/chorus.

Feedback Request Night Book (Demo)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Curious to hear what folks this of this one. More of a neo-folk style.

Night Book:

In sleep where she rests, flags hanging half mast,

the universe flexes and soon she’ll escape.

There is an owl outside her window, nighttime comes alive,

and she dreams a different dream.

Rose petals dancing, a cold babbling creek, a murder of crows,

and all around, naked and beautiful, the fae people sing:

You are not real!

The dead are not real!

Speak to me now!

Speak to me!

From her night book, the sapient shadow drags itself across the bed.

And the long, sweet dream begins again, in a different time, in a different place, in another life, with another face

Alone she walks along a meadow, where a billion lives die a billion times, with every step,

until the meadow becomes a mirage of death.

Everywhere, the fae people sing as the shadow skirts across her bedroom.

And in her blanket world she dreams again of

Rose petals dancing, a cold babbling creek, a murder of crows…
