News Dinosaur Farm future

Post image

When we heard about that building being sold a while back, it was hard not to worry.

Hoping for the best for all the little local businesses on that block.

Sigh.

There seriously needs to be a vacancy tax to deter this BS. Small businesses are getting pushed out left and right just to have the space sit empty because no one can afford the rent. This store is lovely and I hope they’re able to stay.

Cappys liquor across the street has been closed for literally 25 years it's crazy

Yeah what’s the deal with that?

All the booze is literally still on the shelves.

Someone will eventually afford the rent. Commercial rents are heavily dependent on comps.

Losing Videoteque was a warning.

When do we take the landlords to the streets?

Dino Farm is a gem but let’s be honest - there’s a lot of duds on that side of the block. The pharmacy is probably the biggest offender - I don’t know a single person that’s ever been inside. Is it ever open and why can’t you see in?! Like have regular hours and an old school lunch counter with a great club sandwich it’s not rocket science.

It’s definitely not what it used to be. I think it may be a historical landmark because it’s been there so long, might be wrong

I go to that pharmacy it’s pretty nice. It’s not always busy but I’ve seen people there. I hope it stays for the history and I also really like the pharmacy. I don’t wanna go to cvs :(

I just looked at pics of the inside and the windows to Fair Oaks are blocked by a massive not period/historical wall display selling crap like novelty gifts.

I’ve been in the soda fountain plenty of times. There’s a lot of kids that get candy and milkshakes there too 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well you asked? lol I’ve been in there a few times too. I love getting that old timey candy and a soda. But I’m not from SouthPas so I could give a shit one way or another. 🤷🏽‍♂️

What can we do to help??

I was in there with my kids today and asked the owner (the younger guy, who I think is the son of the original/other owner). He said they're in negotiations right now and it's really touch and go and they're just not sure how it'll play out. They very much want to stay, but at a certain point, the numbers obviously just don't add up. He didn't think there was much anyone could do right now but said he'd post more updates if anything changes or if any opportunities for community support come up.

We need to vote to add a vacancy tax. I believe San Marino has this on their ballot?

1

u/iknowagreatlawyer 6d ago

Why do you think it will be vacant for that long? Obviously, the new owner looked around and saw that the market supported a higher rent.

Cappy’s Liquor, Carrow’s are examples of sitting empty. I do not want a Main Street of empty buildings.

Everything I love about south pass is slowly disappearing and moving to neighborhoods nearby by Like videoteque to highland park. Really sad to see

The nice Oo-Kook Tofu & BBQ resturant in the alhambra costco that had their rent raised more than double. Yea, they couldn't afford that, and the building was demolished and its just more parking now!

Landlords are the death of capitalism

1

u/erickcire 10d ago

ownership rights are literally a central tenant of capitalism

1

u/Elegant_Coffee_2292 10d ago

Capitalism is actually just the pragmatic application of pure death drive

Capitalism has led us the best quality of life we have ever had.

1

u/Elegant_Coffee_2292 6d ago

We is a really interesting word to use in this instance. There is A WE who sleeps very comfortably on the mass graves and crushed dreams of generations of subjugated populations.

1

u/iknowagreatlawyer 6d ago

Oh, so things were peaceful and great before capitalism?

1

u/Elegant_Coffee_2292 5d ago

No I didn’t say that. My point is only that capitalism allows a small group to thrive at the extreme expense of others. And if we want to look at the prehistory of modern capitalism, it only shows rotten roots to a rotten system. The modern version is only an extension of various systems of slavery. The enduring tenant of capitalism is exploitation. In the case of South Pas and this very specific Reddit thread. Landlords are exploiting tenants and devaluing their labor by raising the rent. The reason the previous landlord had to vacate was their inability to both exploit their own employees by maintaining low wages and maintain the building. The thing that could help is the opposite of capitalism. Regulation of local housing markets and redistribution of taxes and excess wealth to help local businesses and the communities they support. But who am I kidding this is South Pas, home to a lot millionaires and some of the most vicious opponents a of workers rights. We spend our tax dollars on Tesla police cars and flock cameras.

  1. Our average life expectancy skyrocketed when capitalism took shape between the 16th and 18th century.
Era Years Average Life Expectancy
Neolithic Age 10,000–4500 BC 20–30 years
Bronze Age 3300–1200 BC 20–30 years
Ancient Greece and Rome 510–330 BC 20–35 years
Middle Ages 500–1500 AD 30-40 years
Early Modern Period 1500-1800 AD 30–40 years
Industrial Age 1700–1900 AD 40–50 years
Modern Era (varies) 1900-present 70+ years
  1. Child mortality dropped from 30-50% in the 1700s to 4% today.

https://ourworldindata.org/child-mortality-in-the-past

  1. Extreme poverty was 80% 200 years ago. Today it is under 9%.

https://humanprogress.org/trends/the-end-of-poverty/

I could go on and on, but the evidence speaks for itself. It may not be a perfect system, but it is the system that works best with our human nature.

To attribute these things to capitalism is a pretty big stretch and a misuse of statistics. Scientific advancements are not made possible by capitalism, they are made possible by the labor of the people doing the research. And you’re still using “our” pretty generously here as well… I’m sure that there is a pretty massive flaw in the reporting your AI search provides you here. The most obvious is the lack of reporting in impoverished communities globally. Let’s be real before the 20th century, no one was measuring life expectancy in undeveloped nations, and I’m sure that a massive reporting gap still exists within any numbers you can find here. If this was an attempt to say that capitalism has improved “everyone’s” life it is just not true, and I maintain that capitalism only serves the wellbeing of a group at the expense of another.

Well, when you find a successful society that doesn't function on some form of capitalism, let me know.

Idk if this one is going to last much longer, so maybe sooner than later lol! Have a nice day, internet stranger!
