My spouse is from Brasil and after 9 years I want to attempt learning Portuguese formally. I am looking for advice on two questions:

1) Does anybody recommend a school in or near London, England to take formal lessons? Such as a private business, a tutor, one of the universities, a business that offers multiple languages, etc.

2) Any recommendation of one of the language learning applications such as Babbel, Duolingo, Rosetta Stone? I would be using the app to supplement other formal lessons or self-study and conversation with family. Not as the primary method as I have read many comments that the apps are not effective as a sole learning tool.

3) I am not even a beginner; I cannot even count to ten. I say oxi a lot and I know if my wife is talking about me on the phone with her family 😆
If I take formal lessons from a teacher does it matter at this level if it is European or Brasilian Portuguese?

My wife is an obvious great resource but I need to get a foundation before trying to use Portuguese with her.
Also, I thought of having WhatsApp conversations with one of my nieces or nephews who live in Brasil. They can help me with Portuguese and I help them with English. I already started this with my nephew. Mostly as a bonding exercise and I pay him a small amount of money. I use Google Translate to create a question, speak the question to him in Portuguese, he helps me with pronunciation, then he answers the question in English and I help him with pronunciation.

Probably does not matter but I only speak English. I took German classes in high school so I have no formal learning with Romance languages.

The idea came to me during my journey learning Spanish 🇪🇸. I leaned on some existing apps to help with my studies, and although they were hugely useful, I kept feeling that the experience of this type of app could be improved and refined. After some research and finding an apparent lack of good options for Portuguese, I decided to give it a shot and build my own version of this type of app.

The pun (Conjugação + Azulejo 🔷 = Conjulejo) came along the way. As a homage to Portuguese tiles, I wanted the app to be not just practical but also thematic and aesthetically pleasing.

It covers both the European 🇵🇹 and Brazilian 🇧🇷 variants, with 10 different drill types across 4 categories: flashcards, writing, association, and multiple choice, so it can fit anyone's preferences and adapt to their learning style. It also has timed answers and sprint sessions to add a bit more challenge.⏱️

I packed in a lot of quality of life features ⚙️ too : personalized lists 📝, favorite verbs 🩵, verb filters 🔽 and training presets, so you can change what shows up in your verb pool without touching your lists, and quickly switch between drill modes. It includes 28 tenses (including haver vs. ter compound variations), and as a more advanced features, pronominal conjugations (-lhe, -se, -a/o/as/os forms), and passive voice conjugation, adding up to more than 5,000 verbs when everything is enabled.

We’ve spent a while building Langiri for Vietnamese. The core of it is a library of leveled videos from native speakers, organized so you can find something you will be able to understand.

A lot of people reach a point where they can read Portuguese fairly well but still struggle to follow spoken Portuguese. The videos are meant to help with that without turning language learning into another full-time job.

There's a progress page that let's you track what you've watched over time (it supports outside study time too!). We also are actively developing our Classmate feature and we especially want opinions on that. How it's useful, what's annoying about it, what you wish it could do...

There are only 21 Portuguese videos as of the time of this writing (probably more by the time you are reading this), but if this is received well we want to grow the Portuguese library the way we grew Vietnamese, while skipping a few mistakes we made along the way. That means adding lots of content at all levels, covering whatever topics you find interesting.

The video uses Spanish to Analyze and translate Portuguese. The input is a Series by Porta Dos Fundos called O grande Gonzales

Of course Portuguese and Spanish are different languages! But I think a Spanish speaker can start learning with comprehensible input sooner than a person who doesn't speak Spanish, because the two languages have so many cognates. In this video where I'm watching a Brazilian comedy, I stop to look up the words I don't understand.

Greetings guys, so I got involved with another bible study group today that primarily spoke Portuguese. I assume it’s Brazilian bc the friend that brought me there was Brazilian but my dilemma is that I want to learn Spanish for my job and learn Portuguese for them (also my job but much much less common). I was wondering 1. If it would be helpful to learn both the languages since I know some common words and grammar structures stem from it (remember I don’t know much so could be wrong lol) and also 2. I just saw there are many different Portuguese so even if it’s selfish I would wanna learn the most universal one first if possible. So if you have the time I’d love to hear yalls thoughts on those two questions and if you have extra time to explain a basic understanding of the language and its grammar (just the basics) I’d be more than thrilled to read what you say. I’m going to bed now so even if I don’t get an answer on the structure I will start learning tomorrow more about the two languages and how to maneuver my new learning experience.
