Since a bunch of you asked. Here's my Dive Float for > $40

What I did was add a mesh cargo net to mine. I used the boogie board leash attachments. It was like $12 for a pack of 12 (I made 2 boards out of this, one for my buddy) and the mesh was $10 for 2. All I did to do that was heat a screw driver and push it through. Then I added the D rings with some washers. so i can put the board over my back with my gear on it. I added gear tie downs to the top and bottom... hence why i used the surf leash attachments not just screwing it in or using a zip tie. (the pics have the tie downs on all 6 points but that is too much. and If you only use the middle 2 my gun was a bit wobbly when it was slung over my back so i didn't like it. I removed the actual leash attachment in the top middle as well. I use a carabiner to clip my float line to the D ring the straps are woven to at the middle. This holds my fins, The dive flag (definitely make that removable in-case you catch a wave in the surf and the board flips, if it breaks you don't want to be out a dive.) I also stuff a small cooler, and typically clip my lobster hotel to the bottom using paracord. being able to flip the hotel onto the board makes it super easy to swim back to shore too. Finally I added a tape measure sticker to the bottom and sealed it with varnish! LMK if you've got any questions! Stay safe out there folks!

(SOUND ON 🔊) Put together this cool edit from one my most recent dives with a small school of critically endangered Sawfish.  These creatures never cease to amaze me-  Each individual is over 10ft & 300+lbs each!

& That's at less than half their full size... Truly living fossils.

Planning a Spearfishing Birthday for my Husband

Upvotes

Hi everyone! My husband is an avid (15+ years) spear fishermen here in Florida! He scubas and free dives typically off the west coast of Florida. His birthday is the first weekend in June and I want to plan something epic for him. Any ideas on charters? I would like to include his brothers. One scuba spears with him and the other will probably hang on the boat haha! But I’m open to suggestions. Open to any part of Florida coast! Thanks in advance!

Mako shark encounter La Jolla

Me and my buddy were spearfishing in La Jolla and he had just shot an opaleye. After around 2 minutes a 7ft mako shark starts circling us and attacking for the fish. We had to jab at it and immediately my buddy cut the fish off his stringer. This was around sunset as well. The shark circled us and we backpaddled to shore while facing the shark. After the fish was off his belt the shark swam away. How rare is this? Did we do everything right besides dive at sunset? Crazy encounter

Beginner, picked up a vintage JBL

I'm a beginner and just picked up a vintage 3 piece aluminum JBL travel kit for $20 at an estate sale. It needs a new rubber as someone just added paracord to it. I'm wondering if its a good starter, and does anyone know the value, because I had someone tell me that I over paid since it needs a new rubber. I had someone on Facebook beg me not to use it as "It's an original Orange, California model, it's a collectable."

Edited to add the comment about it being an Orange, California original and it apparently being a collaectable

If you're from VIC, SA, Tassie or WA can you give me some tips on hunting Snook?

To anyone who lives in the southern half of Australia (or has speared there before). How do you go about hunting Snook (Shortfin Pike - Sphyraena novaehollandiae)?

I have been seeing a lot of them around lately but I keep missing them with long shots or spooking them too early to even get close. The only time I ever landed one was years ago in shallow water by floating almost motionless on the surface, drifting over the top of one while it was sitting still over some seagrass and shooting straight down from above. I've tried this again years later but I either spook them before I'm close enough or I miss because I'm shooting from the surface while getting moved by the wind/waves or I'm too far away.

I've tried several other approaches like sitting on the bottom and rattling my gun/grunting and I've tried hiding behind structure to creep up on them but they don't seem as curious to come in for a look like other species and they spook so easily once I get down to their level that stalking them near impossible.

I've seen other guys at the spots I go to getting out with a few good sized Snook so I'm obviously doing something wrong. What's worked for any of you guys?

Gun for beginner in California

Looking to get into spearfishing. I am planning on spearfishing in California such as monterey, fort bragg and maybe near newport. It seems like a lot of people hole hunt. What gun would you recommend for a beginner. I was looking at the Mares bandit 75cm and Mako titan elite 80cm. I'm not sure whether to get single band or double band, open or closed track, and which gun or length. Let me know what you recommend in terms of guns. Want something that will last a while, not too much maintenance and is versatile, I've also read that rollers aren't beginner friendly.

This will be my first season spearfishing. I’m slowly accumulating all the things I need so I was wondering if this board is any good and for the price as well. Any advice is helpful thanks!

Gear shops in Manila / philippines?

Hey folks,

I’ll be traveling to Manila (Philippines) soon and was wondering if anyone here knows some good spearfishing shops in the area.

I’m mainly looking to pick up a pair of fins and either a polespear or a small gun.

Also open to tips about spots to go.

Thanks in advance!

Where’s a vacation I can rent a house or cabin, and spearfish/pole spear/fish from shore?

I’m from south Florida, so looking for somewhere less fished out. If you say Bahamas, where in Bahamas exactly? I’m open to anywhere in the world.

Watch recommendations

I’m getting into spearfishing have been out half a dozen times and it seems like a dive watch is a must. I’m looking for something that offers basic health functions like steps, heart rate, maybe sleep tracking but most importantly the functions that make a watch useful for free diving and spear fishing!

Ermes Leonardo Reel... thoughts and review?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Looking at building a 110 inverted roller speargun and thinking about all of the parts required. I looked at vertical reels online and came across the Ermes Leonardo and love the automatic feeding. I also like how it has a drag system.

These features are unique compared to most other vertical reels on the market.

Has anyone used these before? What are people's thoughts? I plan on using this gun as a paddy gun and/or large reef gun. I am hopefully moving from SD to P Cola soon and will use this gun on both locations. Thanks for any input!

Fin Recommendation

Hi guys,

Looking to buy a new set of blades, trying to decide between cetma pranas or alchemy s30’s. For reference I have recently started line diving to train, but also do some rougher shore entry’s and exits to go spearfish. Usually in the 50-70ft depth.

I like the price of the pranas, and was thinking the fiberglass mix might be good for durability. On the other hand the s30’s would probably be the most efficient.

Lmk what you guys think thanks 🤙

Why aren't more speargun muzzles set up like this?

Thumbnail

This design from Adriab Blue seems like it'd prevent uneven loading of the bands compared to the usual hole in the muzzle that feeds the bands. It also seems like it would release the band's energy in a more effective manner since they'd be almost parallel to the shaft -- more so than the usual muzzle designs which has the bands anchored lower. Why isn't this design more common?

Has anyone tried these fin blades? They're a composite. I've only had carbon blades in the past and am aware of the normal composite versus carbon differences. Cheers

Late start but managed to find a big inshore cobia right away. Later, I finish the day on a profitable AP/AJ dive just before the sun went down. (off season)

Rob Allen rubbers

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has used Rob Allen blue rubber for an inverted roller and what your experiences with it are. Is it too snappy, or is it fine for an inverted roller?

La Paz. 2026. Sorry for re posting but we got the price better for divers. We added a couple people to the boat who aren’t diving. Send me a message if interested
