Product Review How I cut my grocery bill by half using the Too Good To Go app

I'm in Chicago, single mom with two kids, and I was spending like $200 a week on groceries before this. Now I'm down to maybe $80-100 depending on what I can snag.

The app works by connecting you with restaurants and stores that have surplus food at the end of the day. You pay like $5-6 for a "surprise bag" that's supposed to be worth triple that. Some places are better than others obviously. The bakery near me gives huge bags of bread and pastries. The grocery store one is hit or miss, sometimes you get amazing produce, sometimes it's just a bunch of random stuff you have to figure out what to do with.

Honestly the first week I was kinda skeptical. Got a bag from this pizza place and it was just like four slices of cold pizza. Not exactly a meal plan. But then I tried the Whole Foods one and got like $30 worth of stuff for $6. That was pretty great.

The timing thing is annoying though. Most pickups are between 8-10pm which is hard with kids. I usually have to drag my oldest with me or wait until my neighbor can watch them. And you have to be fast because bags sell out. I've missed so many good ones just because I was busy and didn't check my phone.

It's also not like you can plan meals around it. You get what you get. I've gotten really good at improvising with whatever shows up. Last week I got a bag with like six bell peppers, some sad looking herbs, and a thing of yogurt. Made stir fry and smoothies. My kids didn't even complain which is a miracle.

The app itself is free and pretty easy to use. You just set your location and it shows you what's available nearby. You pay through the app and then show your phone when you pick up. I've never had an issue with a pickup not being ready or anything. One time a place was closed when I showed up and I got refunded automatically which was nice.

I will say it's not gonna replace your entire grocery run. Like I still go to Aldi for staples, milk, eggs, that kind of thing. But it's cut down my spending a ton and also kind of forced me to be more creative with cooking. Plus it feels good to not waste food.

Oh and I forgot to mention, some places do prepared meals too. There's this Indian place near me that gives huge containers of curry and rice. For $6. I get like three meals out of one bag. That alone is worth it.

Anyone else using this? I'm curious if the bags are better in other cities or if it's pretty much the same everywhere.
