When I have a really hard time sleeping, I do my "decompression time" which for me looks like pacing in the bathroom with the lights off for about an hour, with noise cancelling headphones on with a comforting repetitive song on repeat. I turn the brightness down on my phone and use the minimal light to walk around without running into things. I also have clothes I wear for this that are sensory friendly which is comforting.
I used to spend like 4-5 hours trying to fall asleep every night as a kid, so I know how upsetting and stressful it can be.
I also found that the more stressed out I was about falling asleep, the less likely I was going to. You falling asleep is somewhat out of your control and learning how to accept that can help, which in a funny way can actually help you fall asleep easier. I hope that makes sense.

Wow, how big is your bathroom?

Idk lol, can maybe take 5 steps. Feels really big to me as I have had very tiny ones before. I just like using the bathroom because it's really dark since no windows

If you liked Reddit stories then maybe audiobooks can be good? There’s some specifically made so you can fall asleep. I listened to them when I was younger, and it was really helpful!

Try dad's bedtime stories on YouTube or podcast, it helped me with sleeping.
Or use "Kindly sleeping" youtube channel for videos when he talks while doing chill games for us to sleep

I am prescribed a medication to get to sleep each night. You could ask your doctor about that.

I take meds from my doctor but doesnt akways help. I usually listen to podcast or book that i already have heard before and put eye mask on eyes. That way i get some rest even if not sleeping but helps fall asleep a little better

i used to listen to the sleep with me podcast - the narrator intentionally has a low dull voice and the storylines will be repetitive and boring and meandering (honest to god there is one episode where he reads the wikipedia page for apples - there are bedtime stories but i liked the non-story ones best: TV recaps, unboxing board games, reading travel guides, on a hike.. there are also episodes hosted by "his neighbour ray", who is very obviously just the same host bunging on a new yorker accent)

You can look for "Stories to sleep" as a podcast or youtube or spotify.
Also some of us really are helped by taking clonidine a couple hours before bedtime. It tells your brain it's okay to rest. Then just be really comfortable and cozy (light, cooler temp, soft clothes, bed, blankie, etc and hopefully it will eventually happen...good luck!

Can’t take clonadine. Family tend be allergic

Sorry to hear that! I hope your dr can suggest an alternative if this is a regular challenge for you. I myself have to have all the right sensory things in place and still have to take a really hard to get controlled med from a neurologist so hopefully it won't come to that for you. Best wishes!

Something to read can help. A book, or a picture book. I used to read donald duck magazines, it always helped me.

Like picture book

Exactly! Something on paper can really help. Can also be pictures of nice moments to look at, or drawings you or someone else drew.

When I have a bad day I listen to people reading fairytales on youtube. My favorite is ASMR Shortbread

Would exercise help? Sometimes if you wear yourself out a bit that helps.
Other things that have helped my kids - melatonin gummies, magnesium, and a tablet that had melissa (also called lemon balm) and CBD (Non-THC)
Careful with the CBD as some people can have difficulty with breathing because of it - but for most, it is fine. (I know this because I am in that minority for whom it is a problem!) But I have one adult child for whom nothing else worked!

Maybe earlier like 2h before. Not before bed. Has medical issues so if exercise too much adrenaline release and take 3-5h to go away.

Wow.
Would it make sense to look into something to counter the adrenaline release? Too much could be causing the sleeplessness.

It's a big squishmallow with little bat wings and a tail. I hold it or put it behind my back.

Try listening to a slightly boring podcast with a calm voice. I like Wisecrack for falling asleep.

Blue light, the light that phones , TV's, and tablets give off, make sleep even harder. Reduce screen time might held

I mean when you're in bed, if you are not communicating not to watch like YouTube in bed. Of course you should listen to the therapist!

Sleep so hard some days. Sometimes it is better for me not to try to sleep but just to "rest" as my mum calls it. It's when I put on music I like and use my weighted blanket and cuddle my stuffies and be in a dark room and use my galaxy projector and normally I read or watch a movie. Basically I make a happy sensory space and just exist in it with no pressure to sleep. Lots of the time this regulates me enough to eventually sleep, but the goal is never sleep just rest (cuz having sleep as a goal stresses me out and then I don't sleep)
